Here's ECO's article on the fresh Landing.Jobs Global Tech Talent Trends 2024 Report - Portugal edition. Ana Marcela did a great job analysing and summarising its insights on this article piece (strongly suggest reading it). The IT Work market is in a low condition, showing a lack of confidence on both Talent and Company sides. It seems no one wants to give a step out of the last crisis cycle and resume investment in creating new products (or evolving existing) to foster competitive advantages. IT Professionals have lost some of it's bargaining power to companies, and most companies are still mostly in hiring freeze mode (even if they say otherwise.) It's a strange situation, but I'm hopeful this situation is also a correction of some wrongdoings and a preparation for a major jump in this market. My bet be would be that 2024H1 will still be pretty most a 'still' year, but on 2024H2 stuff is going to start heating up, and the market machine will prepare for a new strong growth cycle. This is just my hypothesis, but would love to know your perspectives on this. 🇵🇹 🛑 🧮 🦄 This is a story about why in Portugal we must stop counting unicorns. Suspension of disbelief is critical for #startup success. We need to be bold in imagining and creating the future 🚀 However, imagination only produces fairy tales, to create true value we need execution. Getting millions in funding 💰 is an amazing tool to achieve growth 📈 Getting millions in funding is no success metric. 🙅‍♂️ Getting millions in funding to get thousands in revenue is the definition of a bad investment and a bad business. What a remarkable day yesterday! We kicked off the day with the Clean Future Demo Day, where outstanding founders presented groundbreaking solutions aimed at driving sustainability forward in cities, across mobility, construction and retail categories. 🌱 Congratulations to all and, in particular to our overall winner: Tether (Techstars '23)! A few years ago, as I started investing in European B2B Software companies out of a freshly raised Innovation Nest F2, I stumbled upon Infraspeak in a newsletter. My preference for clear vertical market software companies got me immediately interested in the company. I somehow managed to leverage my network and reach Felipe Ávila da Costa 🇺🇦🕊 - one of the co-founders. At the time, Infraspeak was a tiny startup but its dreams of disrupting the Facility Management market were far from small. I tried to convince Felipe and Luís Martins to let me invest in their company. It wasn't easy. I believe it took me 18 months but finally, we took an allocation in their seed round. Fast forward to 2024 - Infraspeak just announced that it has closed an €18M series B to fuel further expansion across several European markets and Brazil. As Felipe always says - they are 1% done. Market-defining companies sometimes take some time to "take off". Infraspeak is at an inflexion point to become the market leader in global Facility Management software. In 2016, when I was starting my entrepreneurial journey launching the 1st Search Fund in Portugal, most of the people I spoke with about the project said: "this is not going to work in Portugal". 8 years after, it looks obvious that search funds do work in Portugal. With my search fund, through a buy and build strategy, I launched Project To Be, an educational company, that acquired, integrated and improved 6 early education schools in <5 years, creating immense impact in the educational communities. Searchers that came after me in Portugal had an astonishing success, acquiring SMEs in distribution, software and development and sale of construction materials. There is still huge unexplored potential for Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA) in Portugal, as a more entrepreneurial solution for succession problems in SMEs. It was great to be back where it all started for me 8 years ago, at IESE Business School Search Fund Conference. Last week I was at SIM Conference (by Startup Portugal) representing oito 🐙and Vogal, and while there were many peak moments, like entrepreneurs lunch, hearing Tim Ferriss, watching Founder Tales LIVE for the second time, and many others.... There was one that made my day at the event. And that was seeing yet again another startup with did rebranding for. This one for Fetalix, a Health Tech startup, and as you can see by Joana's comments, we did a great job 😍 Worth mentioning other highlights & notes from the event: - Porto (and north in general) def needs more events like this. - The lunch was meant to be 4 guys, ended up being 20 in total, all getting to know each other and share experiences. - Managed to finally meet both Roberto Machado and Mario Tarouca after many years of following them on LinkedIn. - Cool to meet in person other guys working with Generative AI, Rodrigo and João from Augusta Labs & Miguel and Diogo from Sapient Studios 🤖 - Don't know why, but in events like this, always cross myself with Tocha 🔷going into the WC 😅 - Will not forget about Intuitivo, which is another startup present at the event I've worked with in the past, and always great to see the faces of João and Duarte 💚 I'm sure there were many more that I'm not remembering right now, but this type of events are really worth for the experiences and networking.
