🎤 I'm finally back from Devoxx Poland 2024, and I have to say, I enjoyed the whole conference. On the first day, I gave a talk that was outside my usual tech topics like Java, Testing, Architecture, and Domain-Driven Design. This time, on the biggest stage yet, I talked about being productive at the intersection of development, communication, and business. My talk, "7+ Painful and Funny Tech Lead's Stories to Level Up Your Productivity" 📈 was a very personal one. I shared my pain, some tears, and experiences from 17 years in the industry. I was unsure about the reception, but I was relieved to see many people relate to my stories (even more than I anticipated). I got positive feedback from many people, so I may be speaking on a similar subject in the future. Those productivity tips could save a lot of time for many people in the tricky world of software development. A few words about the conference organization: it was top-notch! The venue was fantastic, with lots of space and a beautiful view of the Wawel Castle 🏰. The lunch was delicious on all three days (though I'd love to see a conference in the future where there are as many veggies and healthy food as cookies and donuts! 🥗). I also appreciated the reusable badges - great for the environment, though it meant needing to ask people for their names. There were five conference tracks and some workshops, and I was happy with the presentations I attended. I wish I could have seen them all, but I'll catch up on the ones I missed when they're released. You're using the same route to work everyday? Listen to the same songs? Read the same newspapers, or follow the same celebrities here on LinkedIn? You feel reluctant to change your technology stack? You're cheering for polish(or other) football national team, while ignoring teams in other sports competition? Don't worry, we've all been there. We're all victims of our brain laziness, ekhm, resource optimization. It's called attention bias. It's a brain tendency to focus on the things(faces, tools, habits) that seems familiar. To not think, really, but operate on autopilot. We like familiar. How can we change it? Do something a little bit differently. Smile, when you would normally get angry. Watch volleyball instead of football. Give new tool a chance and sign up for a trial. Speak with someone new. Listen to a new song. Change a pattern of looking into data. Try to interpret the facts from a different angle. Don't trust the familiar.(not always) #data #bias #psychology

We Are Not Loud Enough! 🔊 I have watched Irina’s presentation from RailsConf 2024 for the second time. It’s brilliant and inspiring! Startup stories and the most needed things in our ecosystem! A lot of case studies and innovative ideas! I highly recommend you watch it, as it covers a really important topic for all of us Ruby developers! Any of us can contribute! I’m glad that we have similar thoughts, Irina Nazarova, and we are taking the same road! Here are the points on what startup CTOs miss or what is not enough in our ecosystem: 5. We Are Not Loud Enough! There are a lot of Ruby conferences and events. It’s great and worth sustaining, so keep going! On top of that, we should advocate more at non-Ruby events and platforms. As a team from the Polish Ruby User Group and Visuality, we are also discussing the topic of sharing great things that are so obvious for us Rails people but not so obvious for people in other technologies. We are planning to visit more non-Ruby-related conferences! 4. More Ruby for AI Agree. We are planning a big meetup for AI in Warsaw, most likely in November. 3. More Integrations What are the most crucial integrations you had in mind, Irina? It’s worth listing all of them to show people a path on how they can contribute! 2. Rails Frontend Ecosystem Hotwire is great, but people still don’t use it widely. When we presented at a meetup, only 4 out of 40 people raised their hands that they were using it in their projects. 1. Integrating with React/Vue.js We have implemented React into components in Rails views. It’s not that difficult, but there is no perfect solution. 0. Let’s Do This Together My mission to contribute to Ruby and Rails is to start local meetups and reunite Ruby people. Warsaw meetup, LRUG (Łódź), Barcelona.rb, Amsterdam.rb reactivated! We are also helping other meetups and established a conference in Warsaw! Do you hire developers based on technical skills alone? It could be costing you.  Many companies make this mistake, believing that if a developer can code well, they’ll automatically thrive in the team. But this is not always the case. I have a client in Krakow who specifically hires Java Engineers who can have a “normal conversation" about software, clean code practices, and general life. But most importantly someone he can get along with. If they can do that, he’s usually ready to hire them. However, if they don’t fit culturally, it doesn’t matter if they’ve coded at Google, have an Oxbridge education, or have a long list of technical achievements. They won’t get the job. This is also not unique. According to Leaders.com, approximately 80% of employers take personality into account when making hiring decisions. Also research from Harvard Business Review found that 40-60% of hiring managers admit to hiring candidates who resemble them in terms of background, values, or attitudes. None of this mentions their skills. The ability to mesh with the team and collaborate is non-negotiable. Some people picture developers as introverted hackers, coding away in dark rooms, surrounded by empty energy drink cans. The stereotype that developers don’t need social skills in my opinion, comes from how they’re portrayed in Hollywood (Die Hard 4 was what came to mind when writing this). In reality, developers are part of cross-functional teams. They interact with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders daily. They need to explain complex ideas, collaborate on solutions, and contribute to the team’s overall culture. A developer who can’t work well with others or communicate effectively can disrupt workflows, no matter how technically gifted they are. It’s like having the most advanced software that no one knows how to use. What’s the point? The best hires are those who fit into your culture and can contribute to the team dynamic - not just those who can write the cleanest code. So if you’re only hiring based on technical skills, you might be missing out on your most valuable assets: collaboration, communication, and cultural fit. Skills get you in the door, but culture fit keeps you there. I don't know if this is only my observation or if someone else feels the same. One of the biggest problems with infrastructure is that it is too often isolated from the development teams. Companies often extract a separate team responsible for the infrastructure at some point. As this team grows, it is then split into multiple others. These teams handle topics like identity access management, orchestrators, API gateways, or build pipelines. This, in turn, leads developers to worry less and less about infrastructure. It is not uncommon for software architects to treat infrastructure-related topics as a second category. There are DevOps; we can put it on their shoulders. This is an anti-pattern. There are so many things that can go wrong: - Database, storage, and cache - API gateway and load balancers - IAM - Orchestrators, message brokers - Security of infrastructural components And many more. At some point, I decided to start collecting topics related to architecture that are most important from the software architect's perspective. The result? First things first on Monday. Fixing some UI/UX bugs - Improved URL search and now it is ridiculously easy to check any startup URL. Who are competitors, where they are based, have they raised. And also Check investors who are investing in these kind of companies. Thank you Swotzy for being my go to test company to check if there are relevant investors and similar companies :) p.s. Also fixed annoying result page reloading. Minor bug for men, major annoyance for humanity.

When we started AccessOwl, the idea was clear: Okta is a poor fit for many companies looking for an easy way to manage their SaaS apps. Along the way, we kept hearing one piece of feedback repeatedly: “If you automate my SaaS tools, can you also show me where we’re currently wasting money?” We must have talked to hundreds of IT admins (many of whom I’m happy to now call customers). That’s why you need to have defined values, requirements, and a thorough hiring process. But no one loves the overdo of a 10-step, month-long interview process either. At incora, we have 2 main steps: 1. The first is an initial interview to see if our values and vision match. There’s also an English test because that's a big part of the job. 2. And just then, we have a technical interview (sometimes with a few steps if needed) to see if a candidate has all the skills needed. Sometimes, not all the requirements are checked, but it’s still a perfect match. The skills could be learned, but a responsible person is hard to find nowadays. Why do many founders feel stuck in a world full of information? A common theme stands out in talks with many founders: despite vast online resources, they crave real human interaction for their projects - just to make the first step. We have endless access to information and tutorials. Yet, often, we need someone to listen, challenge us, give feedback, and clarify the next steps. I once spoke with a founder aiming to create an automated real estate valuation service. He planned to include crowdfunding and detailed reports. He thought all this was essential. However, our chat made him realize he only needed the valuation model to start. That's where the demand was.
