Microservices: Symphony or Chaos - was the title of the Architecture Panel 🎤 I participated in last week at #PeakIT006, with Dino Esposito, Dan Patrascu-Baba and Claudiu GURA   ⚡A Modular Development Approach is Key, in microservices or not - was one conclusion we've reached 💡   You may have a microservices architecture, but if the services do not interact through well-defined, abstract interfaces that hide the implementation details, allowing developers to understand one service at a time without needing to know the insides of others, you're in a bad place.   You want your services to depend on well-defined contracts 🎯. Whether you achieve this or not, puts you in two different worlds:   🔥If you don't, you end up with a Distributed Monolith. You pay for all the complexity microservices bring (communication latency, increased infrastructure costs, complex diagnostics and monitoring, transactions, etc.) without the benefits of a loosely coupled system. You won't be able to develop, test, and deploy each service in isolation because changes in one service will cause other services to break in unpredictable ways, just like in a coupled monolith.   🌈 If you do, then it doesn't matter much how you code the contracts. If you need a distributed deployment and go with microservices, they may be REST, JSON, gRPC, etc. But this is just a choice. If you don't want to pay for the complexity of distributed architecture, you can write the contracts as DTOs and interfaces and deploy all the modules in one process at once. You'd have a microservices architecture deployed as a monolith, where you can develop and test each service on its own, but choose to deploy them all at once. 😯 Very few developers know that in DDD! 𝐓𝐰𝐨 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐠𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧-𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 (𝐃𝐃𝐃) In the world of DDD, there’s an intriguing discussion about how we perceive Aggregate Roots (AR). I’ve been reflecting several years ago on this, and I wanted to share insights from two prominent schools of thought: 1. 🔥 Udi Dahan’s Perspective: • Contextual Aggregate Roots: According to Udi Dahan, an entity can serve as an Aggregate Root in one use case and not in another—even within the same bounded context. This means the exact same class might act differently depending on the scenario. • Non-Structural Property: He argues that being an Aggregate Root is not a structural property of the system. Instead, it’s determined by the specific needs of EACH use case. • Avoid Rigid Annotations: Annotating a class permanently as an AggregateRoot might limit flexibility. Since an entity’s role can change, rigid annotations could hinder the model’s adaptability. Udi Dahan introduced this idea to the community around 2009 with his article « Don’t create Aggregate Roots » (google for it), and it has significantly influenced how some practitioners handle immediate consistency and model complex domains. 2. 💦 Vaughn Vernon and Eric Evans’s Perspective: • Fixed Aggregate Roots: In contrast, Vaughn Vernon and Eric Evans advocate that an Aggregate Root is a structural property of the domain. An entity designated as an AR remains so across all use cases within the bounded context. • Consistent Boundaries: This approach emphasizes clear and consistent aggregate boundaries, which can simplify understanding and enforcing invariants. • Structural Annotations: Using annotations like AggregateRoot aligns with this perspective, as it reflects the entity’s consistent role in the domain model. This school of thought focuses on stability and predictability within the domain model, which can be advantageous for maintaining invariants and ensuring clarity. Why I Favor Udi Dahan’s Vision 🔥: I’ve leaned towards Udi Dahan’s approach for a few reasons: • Flexibility in Modeling: It allows for more adaptable models that can cater to varying business processes and transactional requirements. • Simplified Consistency Handling: Immediate consistency across related entities becomes more manageable without complex coordination between fixed aggregates. ****That point is so GREAT! 🔥 I can assert**** • Optimized Performance: By adjusting aggregate boundaries per use case, we can optimize further for performance and scalability, loading only what’s strictly necessary. Central to our efforts is the challenge of building ML pipelines that can deliver personalized recommendations to our vast user base. This presentation will share our journey in mastering these pipelines at a scale that's both practical and impactful. While the world of ML offers many tools, working at a "Reasonable Scale" has its hurdles. Unlike tech giants with virtually limitless resources, most enterprises don't have the luxury of processing billions of data points daily, hiring endless talent, or leveraging infinite computing power. At Allegro, we have to be smart with our resources. We often face challenges like ensuring consistent data quality across diverse sources, managing the intricacies of deployment without the luxury of vast dedicated teams, or the need to make quick recommendations with the computing power we have available. Adapting to new ML techniques while keeping our systems efficient is a constant balancing act. This talk will dive deep into the challenges of doing ML at a reasonable scale. Through Allegro's experiences, we aim to show that with the right strategies, even mid-sized operations can achieve great ML outcomes. Piotr graduated with honors his engineering and master's degrees in computer science at the Politechnika Gdańska. He is a research engineer in the Machine Learning Research team at Allegro, where he works on the application of reinforcement learning for recommendation systems. At the same time, he is conducting research for his PhD in deep reinforcement learning at the Politechnika Gdańska. During his scientific career, he had the opportunity to, among others, cooperate with the VGG group at the University of Oxford on the "Toddler-Inspired Active Representation Learning" project and prepared materials and conducted classes on "Reinforcement Learning" at the Uniwersytet Warszawski. While working at Intel Corporation, Piotr also gained experience in implementing drivers for general-purpose computing on Intel GPUs and implementing libraries for Intel's deep learning accelerators. Privately, he is interested in science in general, and space exploration in particular. He likes hard sci-fi movies and books, post-apocalyptic, detective stories, but also space-opera novels. In his free time, he runs, bikes, snowboards, and watches the stars through his Newtonian telescope.

The traditional recruitment process in IT often results in hiring individuals who struggle to handle #real challenges. Every day, we receive numerous applications from developers who have only worked in a #coronavirus bubble. While it's not impossible for someone to progress from an intern to a senior developer within a year or so, the reality is that a developer needs to have a much broader way of thinking than just the ability to answer technical questions. So, we implemented the System Design Challenge as a part of our recruitment of mid-level and #senior developers. 15 scenarios simulating actual client engagements. In a 2-hour session, candidates are assessed on the ability to: - Engage in technical client #communication. - Show an understanding of a #design-first approach - Analyze system requirements and apply system design #principles - Discover and address #functional and non-functional #requirements - Present well-reasoned #solutions Our goal is to catch the way the candidate thinks, acts, and communicates the work.  Only real cases, real challenges, and real work should be done to verify if the candidate matches our high-level expectations. What did we get? - 80% of candidates who passed the technical interview failed after this stage! But, we transformed the #quality of the engineers we're bringing on board and now find perfect fits, able to tackle complex challenges and collaborate with clients. What do you think? Yesterday I had the pleasure of flying the TestCoders -banner to Romania and run our full-day (hands-on) tutorial on using Cypress.io (from zero to hero) at the Romanian Testing Conference. I'm not selling nor promoting Cypress, but rather giving participants insights and (actual) experience to enable them making informed decisions on 'if', 'where', 'when' and 'how' to use it (succesfully). Why I do this? Because the test automation community (still) seems to suffer from a condition I call 'tool fetish'. We (as a community) just love comparing testing tool with one another without any real context. I believe attempting to compare testing tools without context is as shallow as saying: "Harley Davidson motorcycles are better than the Volkswagen transporter..." 🤔 Context always matters! And context requires knowledge and skill. So let's keep on gaining that knowledge and skill and keep our minds open like the great folks at the Romanian Testing Conference and never stop collecting context!
