As part of the tenth #ConnectingEuropeFacility (#CEF) round, the European Union allocated 345 million to the #Latvian RB Rail AS | Rail Baltica section. Efficient public transport is crucial in metropolitan areas. In Gdańsk, it is managed by three main stakeholders: The Gdańsk Public Transportation Operator (GAiT), the Gdańsk Public Transportation Authority (ZTM), and the Gdańsk Roads and Greenery Authority (GZDiZ). They aim to improve public transport by using data on passenger numbers, routes, and behavior.     To collect this data, they use our IRMA sensors, which provide accurate data for real-time analysis and future planning. We need continuous action from EU institutions and governments, and more cooperation with and amongst stakeholders, to tackle #roadtransport labour market challenges.   At a conference organised by the European Commission, IRU’s EU Director, Raluca Marian, together with employer representatives of other transport sectors, trade unions as well as EU and national legislators discussed developments and solutions to challenges in attracting and retaining transport workers. Better working conditions, including more safe and secure truck parking areas, improved access to information and enhanced cooperation with all stakeholders is critical. We are aligned with IRU, the International Road Transport Union in welcoming news of an additional €60 million in funding from the European Commission to support the building and upgrading of more secure #truck #parking areas in #Europe. As well as helping to protect #drivers, vehicles and loads, this latest funding sends a clear message to truck drivers that their #security is paramount. Initiatives like this can help build confidence in the commercial driving community that the focus on driver safety has never been greater. This, in turn, will, hopefully, help to attract more people into the #roadtransport industry, where the lack of drivers and the driving community’s aging population are a major concern. #tapaemea is also playing an important role in this process. As well as being an approved training centre for the EC Safe & Secure Truck Parking Areas (SSTPA) Standard, our own Parking Security Requirements (PSR) Standard is now giving our members access to a PSR parking network spanning Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, and Sweden. Our new Driver Security Guide is available in 15 languages, and we are in the process of developing a new driver training programme. Of course, we can all do more but to achieve the changes we need in terms of a bigger choice of secure parking places and a bigger pool of driving talent is going to take time. 🚨 Changes in Hungary's E-Toll System 🚨 Effective September 1, 2024, Hungary has expanded its toll system for vehicles over 3.5 tons to include several new road sections. This update aims to improve traffic management and road maintenance by ensuring that all key routes are properly covered by the toll system. It is important for drivers to be aware of these changes to avoid unexpected penalties. 📢 The new toll sections include: - Section of the M6 motorway between Mohács and Lippó (km 191-208, 16.5 km long); -Section of the M44 speedway between Szentkirály and Lakitelek (km 24-30, 5.5 km long) - Bypass section around Bátonyterenye on main road 23 (km 0-2, 2 km long) - Bypass section around Sajószentpéter-Berente on main road 260 (km 0-10, 10 km long) - Section of main road 451 between Szentes and Orosháza (km 46-77, 22.5 km long) - Section of main road 512 between the M6 motorway and Kalocsa (km 0-17, 17 km long). In addition, starting from August 16, 2024, the authorities have updated the fine rates for unauthorized road use. Europe is currently facing a shortage of over 233,000 truck drivers, and the inadequate state of parking facilities isn't helping to attract younger generations to the profession. To explore these challenges, Mindaugas Paulauskas, CEO of Girteka Transport, drove 7,600 km across key European routes. During the trip Paulauskas discovered substantial differences in parking infrastructure across various countries. Here are some of his observations: 🔻In Sweden drivers benefit from secure and well-managed parking areas, providing a strong example of effective facilities. 🔻Denmark struggles with long-term parking restrictions despite having enough parking spaces, which poses problems for drivers needing extended rest. 🔻Germany faces severe overcrowding in its parking areas, leading to stress and delays. 🔻The Netherlands and Belgium offer secure paid parking, but the high demand near urban centers often surpasses available spaces. 🔻France provides excellent parking along major highways but lacks consistency on the local roads. 🔻In Spain, paid parking generally meets drivers' needs, achieving uniform quality across regions would further improve conditions. These findings illustrate the urgent need for improved parking infrastructure to support drivers and the logistics industry. #Electrified #micromobility solutions, such as scooters, e-bikes, and e-mopeds, are becoming popular in EU cities for their convenience, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility. However, they pose safety risks like battery #thermalrunaway (BTR) due to heavy usage and poor maintenance. As a result, many large cities are #banning these ride-sharing services and restricting access to public transportation areas. From the Battery Group of CMT–Clean Mobility & Thermofluids (UPV), we are working towards improving this issue. Some of our advancements are presented in our latest paper published in Applied Thermal Engineering Journal (Elsevier): "Multiphysics integrated model of NMC111 battery module for micro-mobility applications using PCM as intercell material". This approach #combines #pseudobidimensional #electrochemical for simulating electrical performance, a #lumped #thermal model for simulating the heat transfer behavior inside the module, and a #thermalrunaway #kinetic model for propagation evaluation. The model proposed allows the evaluation of different strategies for #improving #battery #safety and performance, such as Phase Change Materials (#PCMs) and #thermal_insulators. Main findings: ▪ Integrating the electrochemical model with the LTM and BTR kinetics provides a robust platform for simulating and validating battery module performance and BTR propagation across different applications. The model accurately predicts electrochemical performance and thermal behavior, including precise energy release during operation and thermal events. ▪ The model's scalability was considered from its conception. Calibration of the thermal and kinetic models at the cell level, followed by validation in a 5-cell module, confirms scalability if heat transfer mechanics between cells are maintained. This validation supports scalability for low-power modules like those used in micro-mobility applications. ▪ Selecting PCMs or insulating materials for micro-mobility battery modules requires careful consideration of their thermal and physical properties. Materials must have substantial thermal capacity and latent heat for rapid dissipation of BTR energy release due to the vehicle's severe performance conditions and lack of heat dissipation. ▪ PCMs, such as the tested di-sodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate, are excellent for passive thermal management in battery modules. A well-configured combination of PCM and appropriate separation provides sufficient heat dissipation to improve thermal management and mitigate BTR propagation without compromising the battery's electrochemical performance, ensuring the vehicle's required energy for operation. Excited to announce the launch of the #MISSION (Multi-modal Inclusive Smart urban mobility SolutIONs) project under the Interreg IPA ADRION Programme, starting on September 1st. This project aims to address the critical challenge of decarbonizing urban transport in the Adriatic-Ionian region by reducing the heavy reliance on cars. The focus? Mobility as a Service (#MaaS) solutions to promote multimodal transportation by providing information on integrated travel options. Through MISSION, we aim to make public transport more attractive and reliable by integrating it with other sustainable modes of transport, such as cycling and walking. The project's goal is to create seamless, eco-friendly, door-to-door travel experiences for everyone. A key output of the project is the development of a SmartApp, designed with input from local stakeholders and citizens to ensure it includes the most desirable features and functionalities based on users' needs and contexts. The SmartApp will be tested in five cities across the Adriatic-Ionian region, to enhance cross-border cooperation and knowledge sharing. Project activities will run over the next 30 months and the consortium will be led by Politecnico di Milano – Department of Mechanical Engineering. Also, the MISSION project is the natural continuation of the #TRIBUTE project (funded by the Interreg ADRION Programme 2014-2020).
