Just over two weeks until the deadline for abstract submissions for the contributed volume on ‘Walkability & Planetary Health’ 🌏🌍🌎 This is a publication we are leading in collaboration with the University of Vermont Press, an open-access university publisher. We have conceptualized three pillars for this book- not in assumption that these three pillars are the only themes for this (very) broad topic, but simply as the pillars we are eager to highlight in this work. These pillars include: •Community Resilience •Engagement & Education •Urban Nature to Support Pedestrian Mobility And even though specific, these pillars are themselves quite broad, offering contributors a great deal of spaciousness to contribute on diverse issues & case studies. 250-300 word abstracts are due by December 31, 2024 You can find all info here: https://lnkd.in/d9Kz7z4e #walkability #planetaryhealth

Istanbul calling! Check out GWCN Istanbul's activities, led by architect and urban designer Merve Özhan 👏
🌽 GROWN IN MORDOR 🌽 Photos & video from my 1st corn harvest earlier this year 🔊Turn the volume up to hear that satisfying crunch & snap of the stalk when I break the ear of corn off! 2024 was the year I grew vegetables & fruits for the first time. Carrots, tomatoes, peas, multiple types of chili peppers, lettuce, herbs, microgreens & corn- right on our balcony in the city. I really valued the whole experience but the experience of successfully growing corn from seed to harvest was a life achievement for me. It wasn’t without tough moments. I lost several corn plants to aphid damage, an experience through which I began learning about aphids for the very first time. I also got to experience a successful little harvest. That moment of snapping the corn off the stalk & holding my breath while pulling back the husks, then gasping to see rows upon rows of golden well formed kernels- my joy & satisfaction ran so deep. Through the experience I began to lay a foundation of knowledge & skills that I’m really excited to further develop. I learned about the anatomy of corn, about pollination (I did hand pollinate these plants but we also had some good wind up on our balcony), about companion plants, insect activity & more. The experience ignited a great appreciation in me for growing vegetables & fruits as well as a commitment to center issues of urban agriculture (of which home gardens are also important nodes) at Pedestrian Space, exploring the best practices & barriers to mainstreaming diverse forms of #urbanagriculture in different cultural, climactic & geographic contexts. A lot of my ‘behind the scenes’ work this year has been about laying a foundation so I can work with these issues much more in coming years, also connecting them to aspects of walkable communities. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/efVS8HqE I’m also completely hooked & ready to shift to peri-urban living for much more space for the corn 🤓 📷📝Documenting over @citykitchengarden on Instagram -Annika Lundkvist, FSI P.S. those who live in Warszawa should get the Mordor reference…. #foodandcities #balconyharvest #growingcorn #maize #balconygarden #homegarden

Sky Farm Island Podcast- coming soon!👏 What a treat and honor it has been to host this podcast, touring the world and communicating with urban farmers on different continents, in different cultures, climate zones, and geographic contexts, and learning how they are working to cultivate and strengthen local food systems. As Sky Farm Island notes: "It’s a space where inspiring urban farmers from around the world tell their stories—how they’re transforming cities, growing green spaces, and showing us all how to live more sustainably. From their challenges to their wins, these conversations are packed with heart and hope. 🌻💡" Thank you to Andrea Cayuela of not so creative and Kay Vasey at MeshMinds and Sky Farm Island for welcoming me to this wonderful and meaningful project! -Annika https://lnkd.in/dDYCRhzs #urbanfarming #urbanagriculture #skyfarmisland #urbanresilience #foodsystems

Web post on the 15-minute city lecture and workshop I facilitated for a group of international undergrad students at Mendel University in Brno earlier this year. The post includes data from the #15minutecity survey they took and their homework assignment after the session- to write about whether their hometown had aspects of beneficial and equitable proximity planning (and if so to describe how and if not to describe what is lacking). It was great to engage with an international group of undergrad students on these topics and also facilitate a production of thought and reflection on these themes as relates to their own lived experiences. -Annika Lundkvist, FSI https://lnkd.in/d-FUzi_4 #walkability
