From Childhood Dreams of being a Fiction Writer to Inventing the world's best Fact-checking AI I've wanted to be a writer since I was three and today I managed to get my first press release through strict editors who fact-checked every last detail over multiple drafts: https://lnkd.in/gBANm3MV. Thanks to Priscilla Khoo for an editorial tip and Jeremy Foo for sharing about the importance of PR at a recent SMU Institute of Innovation & Entrepreneurship Founders' Huddle and Winnie Wang Shiyun for encouraging me to push through with the edits. I recollect the adages, "It takes a village to raise a child" and "If you want to go far go together". Early Encounters with Strict Editors My first run-in with editors was early in life. Without knowing that she was Singapore's first Queen's Scholar to major in Literature at Cambridge University, I remember showing my aunt—an entrepreneurial local publisher and author—my first book draft of more than 40+ pages when I was about four years old. She indulged me by giving me some editorial advice and told me about the range of books she was publishing. Throughout my writing career, my tortured prose had to go through nurturing but strict editors such as Bernice Tay and Karon Ng and experienced academic classmates, mentors, and editors before it went to print. One of whom gently told me, Dennis: analytical philosophers and social scientists are supposed to reason from A to B to C, while humanities students can jump from A to C to E; but you make leaps of logic and evidence from A to E. However, it is precisely because my intuition outran my ability to express or even understand my reasoning that I needed the most logical and factual education available through philosophy, history, and STEM. Informational Integrity wants to be Free Without the years of formal education and professional training, I received from world-class organizations and informal mentorship, none of my creative writing or thinking would have become consequential. I teased you last week with a behind-the-scenes shot of Lee creating the infographics we designed for Save Soil APAC for World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. Now, here they are. The stark prediction that by 2050, only 5% of land will remain non-degraded. Just 5%. Plus, the supporting infographic shows you the % of degraded land per country based on reported data from 2019. Let that sink in a minute. Only 5% of land will still be usable by 2050. Think about the food demands of the future world versus the land we’ll have to produce it. AI evolution will come with a cost,it will definitely fuel the ewaste pain manifold.We urgently need to transform ourselves to circular economy practices, ensure the sustainability in electronics. We should find means to extend the life of the products, promote repairibility, learn global best practices, standards on refurbishing and recycling sector. AI will be data driven technology and demand faster computing and quicker product upgradation and disposal. This requires a better strategy to handle the situation to save environment as well as bigger focus on secondary raw material extraction. Entire end of life process requires global standards like #R2v3 to ensure better data sanitation and tracking critical raw materials till down stream vendors. Anyone for some awards? I've decided after a hiatus of a few years that maybe I do enjoy running awards after all. This time round, we can hopefully make a meaningful difference to climate change and sustainability performance with the launch of the tuu Eco Stay Awards. Asia has some of the world's most amazing hotels and lots of them are doing great work on taking a sustainable approach to energy, water, food and waste. However, getting meaningful recognition for it can be tricky with the torrent of greenwashing, self certification and meaningless sustainability certification that is rampant throughout the industry. Guests seem to have had enough as well. We can change that. By taking a data driven approach as a qualification for entry and ensuring that all that data on energy, water, food, waste and HR is correct and validated by the team at HLB Thailand led by Paul Ashburn we can start with an accurate baseline in simple, easy to measure, areas.   Hotels are frequently tracking most of it anyway using carbon accounting software and hardware solutions, so transferring it is simple. From there hotels can enter 27 other categories all aligned to Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) best in class criteria. No one expects any single property to excel in every area of sustainability so this approach allows us to celebrate achievements in everything from Local Community to Cultural Heritage to Environmental Impact on a hotel by hotel basis.  All of those categories will be assessed and judged by our panel of industry experts. So big thanks in advance to Bill Barnett, Marc Bichet, Charles Blocker, Steve Carroll, Nicholas Cocks, Cyndy Tan Jarabata, Jayne MacDougall, David Keen, Kristin Thorsteins Vojtech Vegh and Jessica Wiseman.  I've worked with some before and some are new contacts - they are all passionate about sustainable hospitality and recognising genuine excellence in the industry.  Already making a huge difference in waste reduction are hardware providers like Rayner Loi's Lumitics and Paul Gabie's ecoSPIRITS and we're proud to have them both as partners alongside leading hospitality consultancy C9 Hotelworks and the Phuket Hotels Association, who we'll be sharing focused reports to encourage island wide improvement in sustainability. It's now time to share. I have been working on the Urban Ocean Program this year but what it is about? Urban Ocean is a capacity-building and accelerator program to end ocean plastic pollution and build more resilient communities in cities. The program started back in 2020. It's implemented jointly by Ocean Conservancy, Resilient Cities Network, and The Circulate Initiative. Collaboration is key. Nine cities went through the program. We're supporting the third cohort of three cities including: 1. Santa Fe, Argentina 2. Salvador, Brazil 3. Bangkok, Thailand You know me, I grew up in Bangkok so this gives me hope. The city is serious about becoming a resilient city by reducing plastic waste. We did all the hard work and it's now the time. The industry's involvement in AI-driven platforms like Spotify suggests a vested interest in both sides of the equation. It's crucial to recognize this duality. While the industry addresses ethical and legal concerns, its actions simultaneously reveal a desire to leverage AI for its own gain. Spotify's AI-generated music, designed to avoid not copyright but paying human artists, raises the same questions about artistic originality and the devaluation of human creativity in their current lawsuits against Suno and Udio’s software. Artists and record companies have also been experimenting with AI and using it for creation.The industry needs to be more transparent about its own use of AI and its potential impact on artists. Open dialogue and collaboration with creators are essential to ensuring a fair and equitable future for artists and music. In this context, the future of AI in music isn't just a case of technology vs. creativity or copyright, but a complex mix of innovation, control, and competing agendas. The Escalating Threat of Climate-Driven Typhoons: Lessons from Yagi and Francine Super Typhoon Yagi left a devastating mark on the Philippines, China, Thailand, Myanmar, and especially Vietnam, where it is regarded as the most powerful and destructive storm in the nation’s history. With more than 400 lives lost and billions of dollars in damage, Yagi’s path of destruction has shaken the region to its core. This catastrophe is a stark reminder of the mounting threat posed by climate change. As sea surface temperatures rise and ocean heat content increases, typhoons like Yagi and Francine are intensifying at unprecedented rates. Fueled by warmer waters, these storms rapidly grow in strength, unleashing more severe destruction on vulnerable communities. Yagi’s impact—widespread flooding, catastrophic storm surges, and tragic loss of life—underlines the urgent need for action. The evidence is undeniable: climate change is making typhoons more powerful and frequent. Warmer oceans provide the energy needed for these storms to become larger and more dangerous, while rising sea levels exacerbate storm surges, extending the devastation further inland. Yagi’s destruction across China and Vietnam serves as a tragic example of how rising ocean temperatures and changing atmospheric patterns, driven by climate change, create catastrophic outcomes. To counter this growing threat, we must act decisively: • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions: Cutting emissions is crucial to slowing the warming of the planet and its oceans, the core drivers behind stronger and more frequent storms. • Invest in climate-resilient infrastructure: Coastal communities must prioritize building defenses such as sea walls and advanced stormwater management systems to minimize the impact of future storms. Additionally, infrastructure must be resilient to landslides and flooding caused by heavy rains associated with these extreme events. • Foster global cooperation on climate policy: Only through coordinated global efforts can we limit temperature rise and protect vulnerable communities from the worst impacts of climate change. The way forward is clear—preventing future “Yagis” and “Francines” requires decisive and united action on climate change. Now is the time to invest in a sustainable, resilient future, not only for the sake of our planet but for the people whose lives are most at risk. My deepest sympathies go out to the victims of Typhoon Yagi. Day 1 at Circularity 2024 The first day of Circularity 2024 was both inspiring and informative. I had the privilege of connecting with Adam Culley and Dr. Janez Potočnik, both of whom are at the forefront of advancing the circular economy. Highlights so far... Dr Janez Potocnik Keynote Address: As Co-Chair of the UNEP International Resources Panel, he delivered an insightful, rapid and deep presentation on the transformative potential of sustainable materials management and the circular economy. He emphasised the necessity of decoupling economic growth from resource use and environmental impact, advocating for a shift towards circular, resource-efficient societies. Well worth reading his work in depth! Adam Culley, Deputy CEO of Planet Ark, announced a groundbreaking initiative in collaboration with Boston Global—a Circular Investment Fund aimed at accelerating the transition to a circular economy. This fund is designed to support innovative projects and businesses that prioritise resource efficiency and sustainability, providing the necessary capital to scale impactful solutions. For those who couldn't attend, these developments underscore a significant shift from theoretical discussions to actionable strategies in the circular economy. The emphasis is now on implementing practical solutions that drive both environmental and economic benefits.
