--------------▶️ OUR PROJECTS ◀️------------ 🌿 Data-Driven Wildlife Conservation in Polish National Parks 🌿 With support from EEA and Norway Grants , the OPEN SCIENCE CONSERVATION FUND, SLAVIC AI and Karkonoski National Park (KPN) are setting a new standard for conservation in Poland. Using large-scale wildlife monitoring and AI-powered analysis, we've provided data-driven understanding of ecosystem and animal movement 🐺 🦊 with project "Improving the ecological connectivity in the Karkonosze National Park and its buffer zone". Key highlights: ✔️ AI filters "empty" images and classifies 17 species, from foxes to wolves. ✔️Seasonal insights reveal migration patterns, like deer shifting to lower areas in winter and wolves following them. ✔️ Connectivity models confirm the buffer zone's critical role in biodiversity preservation. Soon you will read more about this project in Kwartalink Karkonoski (in Polish) and we are planning a scientific publication together with KPN staff in 2025. This cutting-edge approach should become a standard for Poland's national parks, enabling data-driven conservation plans to protect wildlife and ensure sustainable ecosystems for the future. 🌍 #Conservation #Innovation #WildlifeMonitoring #AI #NationalParks

Informacje
OUR MISSION We want science to be open, break disciplinary boundaries and reach front-line practitioners. We want to make it possible for everyone to achieve research goals with new technologies. Furthermore, as the amount of collected scientific data is already enormous and continually growing at an ever-accelerating rate, the efficient managing, sharing, using and interpreting of big data has become a critical challenge − A challenge we aspire to help solve. OUR GOAL Our goal is to develop open knowledge, methods and tools that are useful in biological research and nature conservation. We also want to help process information from various sources and fields of research, making it easier to manage, use and share for everyone. WHAT WE DO We create and disseminate analytical tools and software for analyzing nature data. We conduct our own research and support other scientific teams. We support the organization of conferences and scientific seminars. We also conduct workshops and trainings, and patronize exhibitions and competitions as well as scientific expeditions.

🌱 We’re in the Process of Change 🌱 #Transformation is underway here, as we continue to evolve and build on our foundations. Over the years, we’ve been working on several projects that will soon be shared, with new projects and initiatives also in the pipeline. As part of this #evolution, we’re sharing a glimpse into the development process of our #logo, thoughtfully crafted by Joanna Woźniak some years ago. The design embodies elements of ziemia (earth), otwarcie (openness), mitoza (mitosis), and dzielenie (division) — symbols of growth, connection, and the continuous cycle of renewal that drives our mission. Thank you for being part of this journey with us as we continue to move forward. #Evolution #ProjectsInProgress #BrandDevelopment #OpenScience #Trapper

It's not all about mammals! 😉 While our flagship software, #TrapperAI, primarily focuses on mammal classification, we’re also collaborating with other taxa. 🦋 🐞 Jakub Bubnicki, was invited and spent a few days in Norway at a writing retreat for the "#InsectAI - Using Image-based AI for Insect Monitoring & Conservation," COST Action project where discussions centered around integrating new computer vision methods with traditional insect monitoring data. Jakub helped on drafting a new Insect Data Exchange Format, similar to #CamtrapDP. This is the way how can we support this great initiative, we appreciate an invitation! The #InsectAI COST Action aims to revolutionize insect monitoring and conservation on both national and continental scales. With insect populations in rapid decline worldwide, understanding these trends and their causes is essential. The goal is to create efficient, standardized insect monitoring systems, providing up-to-date indicators to support conservation efforts. With the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030 and the upcoming Nature Restoration Law, the project will directly contribute to EU policy implementation. 🌎 🦗 #InsectAI #Conservation #Biodiversity #AI #CamtrapDP

🚨 ECCB 2024 Recap! 🌍 Summer may be winding down, but we’re still buzzing from the heat at #ECCB2024 in Bologna! Our CEO Jakub Bubnicki and Peter Desmond had the honor of presenting during the session: "Towards a European Camera Trap Network for Standardized Monitoring of Wildlife: Where We Are, What Is Needed." and it was FULL of people! Their talk, titled "Camtrap DP: Enabling Local-to-Global Scale Data Interoperability Among Camera Trapping Data Producers and Users", highlighted a game-changing development in wildlife monitoring: the Camera Trap Data Package (#CamtrapDP). 🔍 What’s it all about? Camtrap DP is revolutionizing the way we manage and exchange massive amounts of camera trap data. By creating a flexible, standardized format, it allows researchers and conservationists to harmonize, exchange, and analyze data on a global scale—paving the way for better wildlife monitoring and conservation efforts. 🌿 Why it matters: - Supports a wide range of camera trap deployment designs and species classification techniques. - Facilitates integration with other biodiversity data platforms like GBIF. - Promotes the use of AI for automatic image recognition and analysis. - Unlocks the power of collaborative networks for more effective data-driven conservation. More about #CamtrapDP look here for details -> Link to the publication 📚 📚 https://lnkd.in/dTe3B5XC -> Link to repository: https://lnkd.in/dZjxW39y Pictures: Izabela Stachowicz #WildlifeMonitoring #ConservationTechnology #BiodiversityData #CameraTrapping #DataInteroperability #CamtrapDP #ECCB2024

We are thrilled to announce a strategic partnership between Instytut Biologii Saków PAN/Mammal Research Institute PAS & OPEN SCIENCE CONSERVATION FUND, and Wrocławskie Centrum Sieciowo-Superkomputerowe (WCSS). #WCSS has generously provided us with one-year access to their High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure. This access enables our #TRAPPER team of experts to train next-generation AI models for #wildlife conservation 🌳. Our current project involves using nearly 700,000 samples from our European partners to train an advanced species classification model for over 20 species 🐺 🐗. We are going to benchmark lightweight and efficient #YOLOv8 #YOLOv9 and #RTDETR architectures. The project utilizes 2xGPU A100 (160GB of vRAM) and 3 TB of storage, allowing us to work with higher-resolution images and bigger batch sizes than ever before. Stay tuned for more updates on #TrapperAI in Q2 2024.
