--------------▶️ OUR PROJECTS ◀️------------ 🌿 Data-Driven Wildlife Conservation in Polish National Parks 🌿 With support from EEA and Norway Grants , the OPEN SCIENCE CONSERVATION FUND, SLAVIC AI and Karkonoski National Park (KPN) are setting a new standard for conservation in Poland. Using large-scale wildlife monitoring and AI-powered analysis, we've provided data-driven understanding of ecosystem and animal movement 🐺 🦊 with project "Improving the ecological connectivity in the Karkonosze National Park and its buffer zone". Key highlights: ✔️ AI filters "empty" images and classifies 17 species, from foxes to wolves. ✔️Seasonal insights reveal migration patterns, like deer shifting to lower areas in winter and wolves following them. ✔️ Connectivity models confirm the buffer zone's critical role in biodiversity preservation. Soon you will read more about this project in Kwartalink Karkonoski (in Polish) and we are planning a scientific publication together with KPN staff in 2025. A new study led by Badru Mugerwa shows that camera traps are often missing in the areas where their data is most needed: biodiversity hotspots where wildlife risks are high. New Science: modelling wildlife corridors to increase their viability 🌿🐆🦜 Our alliance partner Osa Conservation is building a climate adaptation corridor for wildlife across the southwest of Costa Rica, and just published an insightful new study. 🇨🇷 🐾 This scientific paper is a perfect example of how science can directly translate to on-the-ground positive rewilding action #hopeintoaction The AmistOsa corridor links the lowlands of the Osa Peninsula to the mountains of La Amistad National Park, a highly biodiverse but fragmented landscape. #Corridors are essential tools for promoting biodiversity resilience under climate change. It is crucial that animals are able to move between these unique ecosystems that span across 3 national parks. The question is: do animals actually use the corridor? Or is there more work to be done? Having modelled the land and set 330 camera traps throughout the landscape, this paper now combines a theoretical modelling approach with years of camera trap data to reveal how wildlife are using these corridors - and providing insights on how they can be improved. This is important to ground truth the viability of existing corridors and to drive additional active conservation work to improve them. The results have shown multiple different species using the corridors, but not everything, including keystone indicator species such as the Jaguar. Tapirs, pumas, and great curassows are already travelling across the Costa Rican landscape in great numbers… but what if even more could be achieved?
