The Special Technology Zones Authority - STZA have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Telenor Pakistan to promote #digital inclusivity and enhance youth empowerment across the country. This partnership aims to strengthen Pakistan’s #technology sector by supporting the youth, local technology companies, and advance Pakistan’s digital infrastructure aligned with STAZ’s mission. The MoU was signed by Executive Director Zones and Zone Developer/Memeber at STZA Aamer Saleemi and by Chief People Officer Areej Khan. This event by attended by many key attendees. Moreover, STZA will partner up with stakeholders to advance youth initiatives within Special Technology Zones (STZs), promote youth skills development programs, connect local innovators with global networks and advocate for policy developments in fields of agritech, edtech and fintech. In a recent Board of Directors meeting held in Islamabad, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL.Official), the leading telecom and ICT services provider in the country, unveiled its financial results for the first quarter ending March 31, 2024, showcasing a robust performance and significant achievements. PTCL Group reported a notable 14% year-over-year revenue growth, reaching Rs 49 billion, driven primarily by strong performance in the consumer segment, particularly in fixed broadband, mobile data, and wholesale & Business Solutions. Despite this growth, the Group experienced a net loss of Rs 4.8 billion, marking a 16% decrease from the previous year. PTCL itself continued its impressive performance in Q1 2024, achieving a revenue of Rs 26 billion, reflecting a 13% increase from the same quarter last year. Notably, the company posted an operating profit of Rs 3 billion, representing a 32% rise compared to Q1 2023, along with a net profit of Rs 431 million. A key highlight of PTCL's consumer business was its strategic focus on enhancing customer experience through its flagship 'Flash Fiber' Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) brand, which has solidified PTCL as a leading FTTH operator in Pakistan. Furthermore, PTCL expanded its value-added services portfolio within the fixed-line business through a collaboration with Waada to provide health, life, and accident insurance. In addition to its financial performance, PTCL Group reaffirmed its commitment to innovation and customer-centric solutions by launching a cutting-edge Android TV box (SHOQ TV) at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona, Spain. This initiative aims to deliver a transformative user experience by integrating multiple Google apps and offering a sleek UI. Moreover, PTCL Group emphasized its role in shaping a 'Digital Pakistan' by launching the country's first neutral Internet Exchange powered by DE-CIX and renewing partnerships with TPL Trakker Ltd. and SNGPL for provision of ICT services and cellular services, respectively. Ufone 4G, PTCL's subsidiary, reported a remarkable 27% year-over-year growth in revenue for its 4G segment, supported by network expansion and strategic initiatives. Ufone's digital brand onic also made significant strides in providing customers with a complete digital ecosystem for an enhanced experience. Furthermore, PTCL Group demonstrated its commitment to corporate social responsibility by providing relief efforts during natural disasters, such as floods in Gwadar, and collaborating with PPAF to bridge the digital gap by equipping 100 women entrepreneurs with smartphones under the "Ba-Ikhtiar" program in Haripur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Ask questions instead of giving answers – be a “critical thinker” That’s was my take to girls from Islamabad government secondary schools in STEAM Mela organized by STEAM Pakistan (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). Giving Quranic leadership example of Maryam (PBUH), mother of Jesus, Prophet Isa (PBUH), I told them that being girls, they’re super awesome, shouldn’t care what people say, and would definitely excel in any career if they shine in character like Maryam (PBUH). When Q&A session opened towards end of talk, there was complete silence. I asked, what was recipe 4? They shouted “ask questions!”. One brave girl took lead and asked first question. Then hall was full of raised hands with questions, questions and questions. Some of them really stumped me like, “what to do if profession you love doesn’t have market demand?”, “what to do if my parents don’t allow me to become what I love”, “where did you learn Quranic Arabic from?” and so on. I could have taken full day answering their bright questions had there been time. It was a wonderful inspiration for me interacting with these future leaders. Telenor Microfinance Bank Limited (TMB), the operator behind Pakistan's leading digital financial services platform easypaisa, has released its financial results for the year ending December 31, 2023. Notably, the bank achieved a significant turnaround, reporting a profit before tax of Rs 1.2 billion. This impressive performance is complemented by the bank's receipt of In-Principle Approval for a Digital Retail Bank license from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) in September 2023, highlighting its successful digital transformation journey. The bank experienced substantial revenue growth, with a year-over-year increase of 70 percent, totaling Rs 28 billion. This growth was fueled by a 90 percent rise in net markup income due to increased deposits and favorable rates, alongside a 65 percent increase in non-markup income, reaching Rs 14 billion. excellent initiatives for Pakistan's economic development. A nation's economic growth heavily depends on advancements in science and technology. For instance, Singapore, with a population one-fourth that of Karachi and an area comparable to Islamabad, has minimal natural resources, including no significant underground water reserves. Yet, it achieves annual technology exports of approximately $500 billion. In contrast, Pakistan's reliance on exporting mangoes and rice will not allow us to compete effectively in the global economy. We need to prioritize investments in science, technology, and innovation to achieve sustainable economic growth and establish a strong presence in the global market."

Telecom companies, on the recommendation of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), have blocked over 9,100 SIM cards of non-tax filers. FBR spokesperson Bakhtiar Ahmed Khan revealed that data on 30,000 non-filers has been provided to telecom firms, with plans to share 5,000 daily for further action. The FBR identified over 550,000 non-filers and imposed a 90% withholding tax on mobile top-ups for non-filers until they file tax returns.
