Leadership Lesson 001: GIVING IS LIVING This past weekend, I witnessed a truly remarkable event that that captured the essence of true leadership. My aunt and her family organized a heartfelt celebration to honor my father for the pivotal role he played in helping her complete her education. Like many who come from a humble background, they struggled through high school because of the lack of resources to pay school fees. My aunt even contemplated dropping out of school because she was tired of being sent home every Friday to go get school fees. As the elder sibling, my dad persevered through the tough times, completed his A-levels, securing a job. His first priority was to support his younger siblings, ensuring they also completed high school. He not only paid their school fees but also provided pocket money and invited them to stay with him during holidays to experience the finer things in life. While this is quite common in many households in Africa (the successful family member supporting their siblings), rarely do those who have been helped organize a lavish event just to say thank you. As I sat through the proceedings and watched my dad receive gift after gift from her sister and other guests, it dawned on me that giving is what makes you deserving of meaningful rewards. Many of us desire to RECEIVE the beautiful rewards in life but we are not willing to GIVE first. We are not willing to give our time, effort, and resources to others. The formula is simple - GIVE then RECEIVE. This is a principle that even God Himself, in all His Power and Might, respects. He wanted to RECEIVE many sons so He GAVE His only Son, Jesus Christ. Moreover, the world of work operates on the same formula. You’re hired by an organization based on your capacity to GIVE your talents, skills, and experiences to the organizations. Even after landing the job, you must continue to GIVE your skills, talents, and experiences to the organization to RECEIVE a paycheck and other perks. It doesn't work the other way around. “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is wasted.” However, true kindness encompasses much more than simply being generous. It's about striking a delicate balance between compassion for others and self-respect. And recognizing and honoring our own needs and boundaries while still extending empathy and understanding to those around us. It means having the courage to say no when necessary, to prioritize our own mental and physical health, and to assertively set boundaries that protect our well-being.    In embracing kindness, we also embrace honesty and authenticity. It means respectfully disagreeing when our values or beliefs differ from others, while still maintaining an open mind and heart. It means having the integrity to speak truthfully, even when it's uncomfortable.    True kindness also requires us to recognize when environments or relationships become toxic or draining. It's about having the strength to walk away from situations that no longer serve our growth or happiness, even if it means stepping out of our comfort zone.    Moreover, kindness acknowledges that we are human and fallible. It's about embracing our imperfections and learning from our mistakes with compassion and self-forgiveness. It means standing up for ourselves in the face of injustice or mistreatment, and valuing our time and space enough to protect them from being taken advantage of.    By embodying kindness with self-respect, we not only uplift ourselves but also inspire others to do the same. If you’re too serious, You’re outdated As people who work in corporate, we’re labeled as: -Suits guys. -Tough leaders. -Serious leaders. And believe me… Life won’t take you seriously, even if you’re taking it seriously. Let’s take you as an example. When you were playing games, or sports with your friends. You wanted to win. You were serious about it. But at the end, you know:  You’re just playing a game. That’s why people are more willing to give, When they’re enjoying the work. Every time I have an internal meeting with my team, We pick cartoon or animal characters that represent us, And this part of enjoying our work and making business more meaningful. Employees with a sense of humor have: -Less stress. -A lighter mood  -More happy life. -Better perceived leader performance. Navigating Conundrum; Decision making is a critical part of leadership which includes processing information and prioritization in achieving desired outcome. Let's break it down simply. Decision Making: In most succinct, the process to empathise, identify, evaluate options and implement, followed by review. Prioritization: (much ruthlessness) All things said, make A choice! Leaders today are thrust deeper into pits of making a choice, quicker yet with 2/3 LESS details. What if road ahead is foggy? Generate dark vision, heat detecting sight! Sometimes situation seems blurred? Build a wiper! Between decision and prioritizing is assumption-bridge. Resourceful leaders understand the importance of building solid assumption eco system. It's imperitive to the success of an efficient outcome. Assumption create an anticipation mindset which often times is a lonely battle. We save that for another day discussion. As the visionary Abe Lincoln said, "you can never please all of the people all of the time"...what if there is thunderstorm and heavy rain? Build an umbrella? Find shelter? NO! Thank mother nature for a good wash and bath! albeit with lightning rod. That's risk management!
