Premiering on Sept. 23, 2009, ABC's beloved mockumentary sitcom introduced audiences to the Dunphy-Pritchett-Tucker clan as they navigated the highs and lows and hilarious in-betweens of, well, modern family life. Clinching 22 Emmy Awards and one Golden Globe, the series ran for 11 seasons and became one of the biggest TV sensations of the 2010s. Modern Family's long-lasting appeal stems largely from its brilliant ensemble cast, with stars like Ed O'Neill, Sofía Vergara, Julie Bowen and more generating on-screen chemistry so real that it naturally extended into their off-screen friendships over the years. Though fans were sad to say goodbye, many former cast members — who've reunited for commercials, award shows and get-togethers ever since — have discussed whether they'd reprise their roles for a potential spinoff. (Leave your porch lights on just in case they come back!) Even if a reboot never happens, co-creator Christopher Lloyd believes the show's 250 episodes are more than enough. "The hope is that people remember [Modern Family] as a fuller experience than you sometimes get with a comedy and come back to it for the nourishment that comes from that," Lloyd told Entertainment Weekly in 2020. Bob D'Amico/ABC via Getty; Robert Ashcroft/ABC Ty Burrell's "cool dad" character Phil cracked us up for a decade with his dad jokes, pipe dreams and "Phil's-osophies" — earning the actor two Emmys for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series. While the family man tried (and often hilariously failed) to connect with his extended clan on the show, the actor and his castmates share a deep bond off-screen. In 2017, Burrell told Haute Living that post-Modern Family, he was looking forward to potentially taking a step back from the spotlight to spend more time with his wife, Holly Burrell, and their two daughters, Frances and Greta. He added that he would still be open to future projects — they would just need to be "something like another television show, where it was close to home, and I knew the hours were going to allow me to be around the way that [Modern Family] has." In addition to film credits (including 2014's Muppets Most Wanted and 2017's Rough Night) and a variety of voice work (he voiced himself on Family Guy), along with a series of guest appearances on other TV shows amid Modern Family's run, Burrell lent his voice to the animated sitcom Duncanville, which aired from 2020 to 2022. 10 Shows Like Modern Family to Watch Now 02 of 11 Julie Bowen as Claire Dunphy Julie Bowen as Claire Dunphy in 2009; Julie Bowen as Claire Dunphy in 2017. Bob D'Amico/ABC via Getty; Robert Ashcroft/ABC Bowen earned two Emmys for her role as micro-managing mom Claire, who was as competitive as she was compassionate regarding her loved ones. While her on-screen family is "fake," their bonds are very real, with her former costars supporting and sending her birthday wishes over the years. She appeared on the big screen in Horrible Bosses (2011), Hubie Halloween (2020), The Fallout (2021) and Totally Killer (2023). Bowen also tried her hand at directing two episodes of the hit ABC series that she confirmed on Instagram, as well as the 2019 short film starring Jenna Ortega, Girl Code. She booked another TV gig on Peacock's Hysteria!, premiering in October 2024. Off-screen, Bowen is a mom of three sons, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Scott Phillips. The actress is also an active board member of Baby2Baby, a charity supporting children in need. 03 of 11 Sarah Hyland as Haley Dunphy Sarah Hyland as Haley Dunphy in 2009; Sarah Hyland as Haley Dunphy in 2017. Bob D'Amico/ABC via Getty; Robert Ashcroft/ABC Sarah Hyland had a handful of TV roles and small film appearances before finding her home on Modern Family at age 18, but the actress is now best known for her portrayal of the oldest Dunphy child, Haley, a rebellious social butterfly who preferred boys to books and had a penchant for screwing up. During the show's run, the actress revealed she underwent a kidney transplant in 2012 and another in 2017, after the first went into failure. She's since been candid about her difficult and emotional recovery process. "I'm stable," she told SELF in 2018. "I'm thriving. I'm super happy with life." Amid her run on Modern Family, Hyland also appeared in Geek Charming (2011), Scary Movie 5 (2013), Vampire Academy (2014) and The Wedding Year (2019). In 2022, she joined the Pitch Perfect franchise for the Peacock spinoff series Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin and began her two-season hosting stint on the dating reality competition series Love Island USA for seasons 4 and 5. Hyland later joined the cast of the Off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors in 2024. After postponing their wedding multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hyland and The Bachelorette alum Wells Adams tied the knot on Aug. 20, 2022. Bob D'Amico/ABC via Getty; Robert Ashcroft/ABC Ariel Winter took on the role of know-it-all middle child Alex at age 11, but she'd been in the industry since her mom signed her up for commercials at age 4. "I love what I do, but I don't know if it's a choice I would have made on my own," she told PEOPLE in 2016. While Claire's Type A mini-me daughter was growing up in front of audiences, Winter was also voicing characters on TV series, including Phineas and Ferb and Sophia the First. She became an emancipated minor in 2015 and later moved in with then-boyfriend Levi Meaden. The pair split in 2019, and Winter is now dating Dumplin' actor Luke Benward. The actress enrolled at UCLA in 2017 before taking a break from her studies six months later to "continue to pursue my career and also try to have a little bit more of a life because I've been so busy," she told Entertainment Tonight in 2018. "But I think education's really important. I love being there. I love learning. I will continue to keep learning." In 2022, Winter said she was moving away from Los Angeles to pursue a quieter life away from the paparazzi. 05 of 11 Nolan Gould as Luke Dunphy Nolan Gould as Luke Dunphy in 2009; Nolan Gould as Luke Dunphy in 2017. Bob D'Amico/ABC via Getty; Robert Ashcroft/ABC When the family comedy premiered in 2009, Nolan Gould was 10 years old. While his character, Luke, was defined by his high energy level, non-existent filter and low IQ, Gould is actually a member of the high IQ society Mensa International and graduated high school with a GED at age 13, which he revealed during a 2012 interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (via E! News). Following Modern Family's 11-season run, Gould appeared on The Celebrity Dating Game in 2021, an episode of Grey's Anatomy in 2022 and in the 2023 film Miranda's Victim. 06 of 11 Ed O'Neill as Jay Pritchett Ed O'Neill as Jay Pritchett in 2009; Ed O'Neill as Jay Pritchett in 2017. Bob D'Amico/ABC via Getty; Robert Ashcroft/ABC O'Neill was already well-known on the small screen for portraying Al Bundy on Married... with Children before he took up the role of Jay. As the often ignorant but well-meaning patriarch of the Pritchett-Dunphys, O'Neill's character was an old-fashioned man's-man who struggled to accept his son Mitchell being gay and his son-in-law Phil being, well, Phil. The ABC sitcom's many seasons were benchmarked by Jay's increasing tolerance and understanding toward his family, who all strived to impress him (except his second wife, Gloria — she set him straight every time). On the big screen, O'Neill has also voiced several characters in films such as Wreck-It Ralph (2012), Finding Dory (2016) and Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018). In 2024, the actor had his first post-Modern Family TV role in the FX miniseries Clipped. O'Neill has two daughters with his wife, actress Catherine Rusoff. The couple has been married since 1986. 07 of 11 Sofía Vergara as Gloria Delgado Sofía Vergara as Gloria Delgado in 2009; Sofía Vergara as Gloria Delgado in 2017. Bob D'Amico/ABC via Getty; Robert Ashcroft/ABC Vergara had a handful of TV roles before taking the small screen by storm as the fierce Gloria. Her role as the family-oriented, outspoken and sexy second wife of Jay (and mother of Manny) provided many of the show's most hilarious moments and earned the Colombian American actress the title of the highest-paid TV actress in 2017. She also received four Golden Globe nominations and four Emmy nominations for her portrayal of Gloria. The SAG-winning actress remains close with her former Modern Family costars, and in 2023, she got the gang back together for the first time since they wrapped the show. "It's amazing because we're always connected," Vergara told PEOPLE. "Even though we haven't seen each other in so long, it felt like we just left the set in 2020." Since the year Modern Family ended, Vergara has become a judge on America's Got Talent and lent her voice in Koati (2021), Strays (2023) and Despicable Me 4 (2024). She later earned her fifth Emmy nomination for her portrayal of the notorious Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco in the 2024 Netflix miniseries Griselda. Beyond the screen, Vergara has tapped into her entrepreneurial side with a denim line for Walmart and a Colombian coffee brand, ¡Díos Mio! Coffee. The actress shares a son, Manolo — whose "old soul" inspired Manny's character — with ex-husband Joe Gonzalez. After ending her seven-year marriage to Joe Manganiello in 2023, Vergara began dating surgeon Justin Saliman. Bob D'Amico/ABC via Getty; Robert Ashcroft/ABC Rico Rodriguez has grown up quite a bit since taking on the role of the precocious Manny, whose intelligence and sophisticated adult sensibilities were constantly tested by his nephew and unintentional partner-in-crime, Luke (who could forget the tequila worm episode?). Rodriguez also starred in the 2015 chess film Endgame and has appeared as himself on TV shows, including Nickelodeon's The Substitute and Unfiltered. 09 of 11 Eric Stonestreet as Cameron Tucker Eric Stonestreet as Cameron Tucker in 2009; Eric Stonestreet as Cameron Tucker in 2017. Bob D'Amico/ABC via Getty; Robert Ashcroft/ABC Eric Stonestreet was best known as Ronnie Litre on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation before warming our hearts as flamboyant farm boy Cam, whose enthusiasm and musical passion knew no bounds. Stonestreet's performance earned him two Emmys for best supporting actor in a comedy series, which would make Cam proud. The actor took up a handful of other roles throughout the seasons, appearing in 2011's Bad Teacher and 2013's Identity Thief. He also joined costar Winter in doing voice work on the TV series Sophia the First and voices the character Duke in the Secret Life of Pets franchise. Since Modern Family, Stonestreet began hosting the Fox competition series Domino Masters and playing Magnus Antas on Disney+'s The Santa Clauses. In 2021, Stonestreet got engaged to pediatric nurse Lindsay Schweitzer, whom he began dating in 2017. 10 of 11 Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell Pritchett Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell Pritchett in 2009; Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell Pritchett in 2017. Bob D'Amico/ABC via Getty; Robert Ashcroft/ABC Jesse Tyler Ferguson had a successful theater career and a few TV appearances under his belt before taking on the role of the fittingly theater-obsessed lawyer Mitchell, whose constant bickering with his sister Claire and longtime partner Cam (whom he eventually married) set the stage for some of the sweetest reconciliations on the series. Not only did playing Mitchell earn Ferguson five Emmy nominations, it also helped him feel empowered as an out gay actor. "There was some weird superpower that I felt like I was being protected by this role that I was also playing," Ferguson said on a 2024 episode of his Dinner's on Me podcast. "It kind of gave me this coat of armor, and I had this protection of being this character that people also loved. I don't know. It was really weird." In addition to Modern Family, Ferguson served as a guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance from 2011 to 2013, hosted Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in 2020 and appeared in projects like High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and 2023's Cocaine Bear. In 2022, he won a Tony for his performance in the Broadway revival of Take Me Out. Ferguson and actor Justin Mikita wed in 2013, and the couple welcomed their first child, Beckett Mercer, in 2020 and second son, Sullivan Louis, in 2022. As the sassy and scheming Lily — the Vietnamese-born daughter of Cam and Mitchell — the actress became the youngest ever nominee (and winner!) of a Screen Actors Guild Award at age 4. Though Anderson-Emmons hasn't had any on-screen roles since Modern Family ended, she continues to pursue entertainment, performing in high school stage productions. Her former costars, Ferguson and Bowen, have even attended her performances to show their support. "I was really nervous for you to come," she told Ferguson on his podcast in 2024. "Because I was like, 'Oh my God, ain't no way Jesse's gonna be here, and he's literally won a Tony.' " Anderson-Emmons and her mom, Amy Anderson, have a food review YouTube channel called FoodMania Review. Close
