The 21-year-old Canadian pop star arrived at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday, Sept. 11 in a black high neck long sleeve lace mini dress by Roberto Cavalli that immediately reminded Spears' fans of a look the singer wore in 2001. Underneath the sheer ensemble, McRae wore a black Fleur du Mal bra and thong (unlike Spears who rocked a boy short). She paired the sexy outfit with Maison Ernest sandals and Jacob and Co jewels. McRae styled her long blonde hair in loose waves courtesy of celebrity hairstylist Chad Wood, who used TRESemmé’s Extra Hold Mousse to achieve the look. Her smoky makeup look was created using products by Stila Cosmetics including its latest launch, Stay All Day Smudge & Set Waterproof Gel Eye Liner. To ensure glowy skin, makeup artist Lily Keys used Herbivore Botanicals. Tate McRae at the 2024 MTV VMAs. Noam Galai/Getty The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? The singer's Cavalli look drew clear inspiration from Britney Spears' navy version at the 2001 MTV VMAs — the award show when she famously appeared on stage massive yellow snake around her shoulders. Due in part to her impressive choreography during performances (McRae got her start on the dance competition show So You Think You Can Dance), McRae is often compared to Spears, 42. Speaking to PEOPLE in 2023, McRae said the comparison was "obviously an honor.""I mean, Britney’s the queen. People are going to compare newer artists to things that have happened in the past, so obviously it's very cool to hear comments like that," she continued. At the time, McRae also shared that her music video for "Exes" took inspiration from "the greats, like Britney and Christina [Aguilera]." Britney Spears at the 2001 MTV VMAs.
