Gaga was caught making sure the actor looked his best for Hollywood’s biggest night, when she was seen adjusting Malek’s crooked bowtie inside the auditorium during a commercial break of the live broadcast. And it’s a good thing she did. Malek hit the stage to accept the Best Actor trophy for his role as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody shortly afterward. Malek’s stylist Ilaria Urbinati told PEOPLE that his Oscars look was inspired by “an old pic of David Bowie in a three-piece tux with that old school vest, but [Malek] also wanted to be really, really timeless.” She also explained how the look came together last minute. “I had a bunch of emails back and forth with the YSL team about the custom look — tweaking things here and there,” Urbinati told PEOPLE. “For example, what kind of vest we wanted, what kind of bow tie and changing the shirt collar — it’s all about the details. Then they sent over sketches to approve. Three days before the Oscars, he tried it on and we made a bunch of adjustments to make it fit perfectly and then tried it one last time the day before Oscars.” The Oscar winner, who walked the biggest red carpet of the season arm-in-arm with his co-star and girlfriend, Lucy Boynton, finished his look with a Cartier Watch and cufflinks. She sat front-and-center with her leading man, who kissed her multiple times and thanked her during his Oscars acceptance speech. Like Gaga, Boynton also fixed Malek’s bowtie at one point throughout the night. Kevin Winter/Getty And it appears that everyone around Malek was on bowtie watch! Even fellow red carpet goers adjusted the actor’s accessory on the red carpet. ROBYN BECK/AFP/Getty “I’m so appreciative to all of you, to everyone who has had a hand in getting me here,” Malek said during his acceptance speech. “To the Academy, to people who took a chance on me every step of the way. Graham King, [producer] Denis O’Sullivan, everyone at Fox and New Regency, thank you guys so much. I might not have been the obvious choice but I guess it worked out. Thank you Queen. Thank you guys for allowing me to be the tiniest part of your phenomenal, extraordinary legacy. I am forever in your debt.” He concluded by shouting out Boynton, 25, who plays Mercury’s former fiancée Mary Austin in the musical film. “Lucy Boynton, you’re the heart of this film,” he concluded. “You are beyond immensely talented you have captured my heart. Thank you so much.”
