Sam Smith put the capital F in Fashion at the British Fashion Awards in London on Monday night.

The singer arrived at the awards ceremony at Royal Albert Hall in a custom tailored jacket and black kilt by Andreas Kronthaler for Vivenne Westwood. They wore a black shirt, simple tie and patent mini bag, which sported Vivienne Westwood’s iconic logo.

The star of the look was the singer’s platform leather boots, which featured lace-up detailing. They minded every little detail: Smith’s socks, which stuck slightly out of their boots, were embroidered with the Vivienne Westwood logo.

Later in the night, Smith changed into a taffeta gown as they accepted the cultural innovator award. Lena Dunham presented them with the award.

The gown, which the singer also wore as they performed their song “HIM” at the awards ceremony, was also custom Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood. The dress’s dramatic puffy sleeves and long train created a dramatic silhouette. Smith finished off the look with custom Pagnell jewelry.

In an Instagram post where Smith shared images from their performance, they called it “an honour” to perform at the awards ceremony and receive the cultural innovator award.

“Whoever needs to hear this right now, be all the things you desire,” Smith captioned the post. “There’s no clothing in the world that fits quite as good as freedom x”

Caroline Rush, the chief executive officer of the British Fashion Council, called Smith “a true cultural innovator who has fearlessly pushed the boundaries of both fashion and entertainment and inspired countless individuals across the world to embrace their true selves,” according to WWD

Smith came out as non-binary in 2019, and has sported both masculine and feminine styles. The singer often uses their platform to inspire others to be their true selves.

Earlier this year, Smith talked to Zane Lowe about how coming out as non-binary has changed their life.

“I feel lovable,” they told the radio host. “I feel comfortable in my skin, but I wear what I want to wear."

The singer released their fourth studio album, Gloria, in January. After the project’s release, Smith got candid about their journey to body confidence in an interview with The Sunday Times.

"I'm happier in my own skin on Gloria,” the singer said. “I feel liberated, released from pressures I felt when I was young. My mum says that, as I've got older, I've stopped caring what people think as much. She tends to be right."
