Lord of the Rings costars Elijah Wood and Sean Astin reunited onstage Saturday at the 2024 SAG Awards to present the trophy for outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role. Before naming Da'Vine Joy Randolph as the winner for her role in The Holdovers, Wood, 43, and Astin, 52, reminisced on how long it's been since their time on screen together and referenced a special character. "How’s it been 20 years?" Wood asked Astin, who replied, "It's been 20 years and yet I’m sorry you couldn't be there that night." Wood went on to joke about their win, telling Astin, "Shawn you were supposed to collect my statue for me if we won, what happened to it?" "Well, it's somewhere. If by somewhere you mean frodo-fan-7-11’s shelf because he bought it on eBay? Sorry," Astin joked, with Wood responding, "Sean!" Astin continued, "No, I just read that Marie Kondo book, and it was just sort of a purge. Anyhow, I just threw it in the fire." Wood replied by telling Astin he's "totally taking his gift bag tonight." Astin said, "Fair enough." Those films — plus 2002's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, all directed by Peter Jackson — grossed more than $3 billion combined at the global box office. Since then, the cast has reunited several times over the past two decades, including for a dinner out with costars Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd in 2022, which Monaghan, 47, shared on Instagram. In the selfie, taken by Boyd, 55, the four men beam over glasses of wine and a few desserts. In Monaghan's caption, he gushed over just how memorable the dinner among old friends was. "It was another one of those successful smash it out of the park kick it into row Z slap my arse and call me Lucy any of it was recorded none of us would work again ... meals," Monaghan wrote. James Corden Recalls Auditioning to Play a Hobbit in 'Lord of the Rings': I Was 'Not Good' New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. announced in 2023 that the studio had obtained a multi-year deal to develop new features based on J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit books. "I'm fascinated and I'm excited," Wood told GQ when asked about the upcoming new movies in an interview published that April. "I hope it's good. I'm surprised — I don't know why I'm surprised because, of course, there would be more movies." "Obviously, at the core of that, is a desire to make a lot of money. It's not that a bunch of executives are like, 'Let's make really awesome art,' " the Yellowjackets actor continued. "And, again, not begrudging anybody because, of course, it is commerce. But great art can come from commerce. So those two things are not mutually exclusive." "But Lord of the Rings didn't come out of that place," Wood added, in part. "It came out of a passion for these books and wanting to see them realized. And I hope that that is ultimately what will drive everything forward with whatever these subsequent movies are." The 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards are currently streaming live on Netflix, from the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles. Close
