Olivia Rodrigo and Collaborator Dan Nigro Named 2024 Songwriters of the Year by ASCAP

Olivia Rodrigo and Dan Nigro are celebrating their success!

The collaborators, who have co-written songs together for several years, have been named the 2024 Songwriters of the Year by ASCAP — the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. 

Rodrigo, 21, and Nigro, 41, were recognized for their talents at the organization’s annual awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 8, at the Houdini Estate in Los Angeles. 

The duo’s winning songs were "Vampire" and "Bad Idea, Right?"

“Olivia Rodrigo [and] Daniel Nigro are a true pop dream team. After taking the world by storm with SOUR, the two followed up with a bona fide modern masterpiece in 2023: GUTS. Their bold, grunge inspired sophomore record brought critical acclaim, mainstream obsession, a sold out world tour and hits topping the charts,” ASCAP wrote on their official website. 

On Thursday, May 9, Nigro shared his gratitude for the honor via social media.

“Thank you so much to ASCAP for naming Olivia and I as Songwriters of the year!!!” he began in an Instagram post. 

“And thank you to @chappellroan for presenting me the award, and reminding the world about my Pizza Hut days… feeling very grateful today,” he continued. The producer’s upload included a photo of himself and Rodrigo standing together at the 2023 Grammys while a second image showed him holding his trophy.

The “So American” songstress also won ASCAP’s Songwriter of the Year award in 2022.

In the year prior, she was named Time's 2021 Entertainer of the Year. 

For the coveted profile, both she and Nigro spoke to the magazine about their songwriting abilities as well as criticism that came with their success. 

Rodrigo reflected on how several of her songs had to be revised to add songwriting credits after fans pointed out similarities between her hits and other artists’ work. 

"It was really frustrating to see people discredit and deny my creativity," she told Time for the December 2021 interview. 

Nigro gave his opinion on how with growth can bring backlash. "It seems like people get funny about things when songs become really popular,” he added.

Rodrigo said that she wasn’t a fan of being compared to others in the industry.

"Young women are constantly compared to each other," she said. "I'm the 'new this' or 'this woman meets that woman,' and that can be reductive. I'm just Olivia. I'm doing my own thing. It's meaningful when people recognize that,” the "Drivers License" singer continued.

"Songwriting is the thing I take most seriously in my life. It's the most personally gratifying, too," she said. "At the core of it, all my songs are about me and my experiences and my feelings. It's an important lesson in controlling your own narrative, too."
