Noah Kahan Performs a Transformative Cover of Olivia Rodrigo's 'Lacy' After She Covered One of His Songs

The folk singer sang one of the pop star's tracks on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge after she performed his hit "Stick Season" on the show last month

The love between Noah Kahan and Olivia Rodrigo is mutual.

A little over one month after the pop star, 20, shared a cover of the rising folk artist’s hit “Stick Season,” the singer-songwriter, 26, returned the favor by singing a rendition of one of her songs. On BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge, Kahan performed “Lacy” off Rodrigo’s recent album GUTS, which the radio station shared online on Thursday.

Kahan was joined by the trio and his U.K./European tour openers Tiny Habits, and the group transformed the subdued pop song into a slowed-down lovelorn ballad.

While Rodrigo’s delivery in the original track conveys a sense of jealousy — and self-disdain for experiencing feelings of envy — the Vermont singer’s croon makes it feel full of yearning and heartache. With harmonies and an acoustic guitar, his rendition is gentle, but exudes just as much emotion.

Dan Nigro, the “Vampire” singer’s producer and longtime collaborator, shared just how impressed he was by Kahan’s cover by commenting on his Instagram post that featured a clip from the performance.

“Nailed it!! I was honestly thinking you were gonna do this song or The Grudge. 🙌🙌🙌,” the Grammy-winning producer replied, referring to another ballad off the hitmaker’s sophomore album, which dropped in September.

Nigro wasn’t the only person to speculate that the Grammy-nominated folk star would sing one of Rodrigo’s tracks during his Live Lounge visit. Kahan himself teased fans by appearing in one of the radio station’s TikToks, which was made in response to a fan who commented, “@Noah Kahan This is your chance to cover an Olivia Rodrigo song. Don’t let me down.”

In the funny clip, Kahan simply smiled while holding his fingers up to his mouth, as if he had a secret that he couldn’t share just yet.

Along with the cover, the singer-songwriter also performed, “Stick Season,” the title track from his breakout 2022 album.

In early October when the “Bad Idea, Right?” singer swung by BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge, “Stick Season” was the song she chose to cover — which Kahan revealed on social media that he saw and was absolutely thrilled about.

At the time, he responded by posting a TikTok featuring a split screen of Rodrigo’s performance and a video of himself listening to it. Over the footage of himself dancing to the tune, he wrote, “Olivia covering stick season? Her song now.”

“id give her my entire discography,” he added in the caption. “olivia thank you so much.”

In his recent Radio 1 appearance, the “She Calls Me Back” singer also opened up about his aspirations to work with the pop-rock hitmaker.

“I would love to work with Olivia. I think that she’s incredible,” he said during an on-air interview. “I would love to write a song with her and make music with her in some capacity. That would be incredible.”

Like Rodrigo before him, Kahan is among the nominees for the coveted best new artist award at the upcoming 66th Grammy Awards

When the nominations were announced in early November, the Americana artist shared an adorable reaction video, featuring him uncontrollably laughing and tearing up as he found out the news.
