Lenny Kravitz Talks Love, Lisa Bonet and His Struggle to Find the One: 'It's Difficult'

Sitting just outside his home recording studio on the rural Bahamian island of Eleuthera, Lenny Kravitz — with his chiseled features, towering locks and timeless cool — reveals a shocker: he’s having a tough time in the love department.

“I would really like [to find love],” Kravitz, 54, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue, opening up about his life now and the rewarding work of his Let Love Rule Foundation. “But it’s difficult for me,” he explains, “being so dedicated to my art, which is not an excuse, it’s just difficult”.

Life is indeed busy for Kravitz, who was raised in New York City and Los Angeles, but now splits his time between the Bahamas — where his mother, the late Jeffersons star Roxie Roker would send him for summers to visit family (his father, of Ukrainian Jewish descent, was late TV producer Sy Kravitz) — and his other home in Paris.

When the “Fly Away” singer is touring the world, “I’m nowhere or I’m everywhere,” he says. And when he’s not, his focus is on serving others in the country he’s called home since he was a kid. This past January, Kravitz’s Let Love Rule foundation and his dentist Jonathan Levine’s GLO Good Foundation brought free dental care to over 400 Eleuthera locals as part of their annual dental clinic.

Kravitz and Levine’s sons Julian and Cody recently partnered up to launch Twice Toothpaste, with flavors for morning and night to promote better dental hygiene and raise funds to expand the clinic to include medical services for the poverty-stricken island. “It’s the best feeling in the world,” Kravitz says of the work they’re doing.

In his 30 years in the spotlight, love has come and gone for Kravitz many times over. Married to The Cosby Show actress Lisa Bonet in 1987, the pair welcomed daughter Zoë (now 30 and starring on Big Little Lies) a year later, before splitting in 1993. Kravitz went on to relationships with French singer Vanessa Paradis (who he credits with helping him set down roots Paris back in the ’90s), model Adriana Lima and actress Nicole Kidman (to whom he was briefly engaged), but he has long pointed to Bonet as one of his deepest loves.

Now, that love has taken a new form. “We’re like brother and sister,” he says of Bonet, 51, who’s now married to Game of Thrones and Aquaman star Jason Momoa, 39, with whom she has daughter, Lola, 11, and son Nakoa-Wolf, 10.

Says Kravitz, “After Lisa and I separated, we learned to find a new relationship. Then I met Jason when they got together and I love him, he loves my kid and I love their kids and we’re all one big family. It’s beautiful.” (Indeed, when the blended clan all gets together it’s easy to mistake them for a gang of supermodels.)

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, Kravitz admits he’s still hoping for a forever love of his own — and more importantly, that he’s ready for one.

“I’m at a place now where I’ve been through so many relationships, and I haven’t been good at it all the time, at all. I’ve had a lot to learn, but I feel like I’m at a place where I’m really ready for that.” Sounding hopeful, he adds “things come to you when you’re ready, I believe.”
