Film Family Values: 11 Sibling Pairs Who've Been Nominated for Oscars

ERIC & JULIA ROBERTS

Eric, who's Julia's big brother by 11 years, was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 1985 for Runaway Train. The actress has four Oscar acting nominations under her belt, including one Best Actress win for Erin Brockovich.

The brother-sister pair reportedly feuded for several years in the '90s, but were reunited after the birth of Julia's twins Phinnaeus and Hazel in 2004. "What matters now is the children," Eric told PEOPLE at the time. "Everybody's healthy, happy and wise. Julia was probably the best-looking pregnant broad on the planet. And I don't think she's ever been happier in my presence."

The actor's daughter Emma Roberts is currently following in her father and aunt's Hollywood footsteps.

SHIRLEY MACLAINE & WARREN BEATTY

The big sister by three years won an Oscar in 1984 for Terms of Endearment, and has been nominated five other times over the course of her decades-long career. Beatty's résumé includes nominations for Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture, as well as a win for Best Director and the 2000 Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.

"He sees things in terms of black and white. I see the gray, the nuance. I tend to be more philosophical, almost abstract," MacLaine told PEOPLE of her brother in 1976. "Warren's very much into money, lots of it. I'm only three years older, but really I'm a lot older."

OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND & JOAN FONTAINE

Fontaine, who died in 2013, was one year younger than her fellow actress sister. She won Best Actress in a Supporting Role for 1941's Suspicion, and was also nominated for Rebecca and The Constant Nymph. Havilland earned wins for The Heiress and To Each His Own, and was nominated three other times.

The sisters were long involved in a rivalrousfeud. "She was a brilliant person, very gifted and, alas, [had] an astigmatism in her perception of both people and situations, which could cause and did cause great distress in others," Havilland told PEOPLE of her late sister in 2016. "I was among those and eventually this brought about an estrangement between us which did not change in the last years of her life."

JAKE & MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL

The siblings have each been nominated once, Jake in 2006 for Brokeback Mountain and Maggie in 2010 for Crazy Heart. They walked the carpet together at both the 2005 and 2010 awards.

Following her Crazy Heart nomination, Maggie said that Jake had given her some pointerson surviving Oscars season. "He said, 'It's a lot of fun, and enjoy it in that spirit. If you make it too much more than that, you'll probably go astray,'" she shared at the annual nominee's luncheon. "My phone started ringing at 5 o'clock in the morning, and there's that first batch of phone calls from people who are up that early in the morning," she added about the morning nominations were announced. "I remember [Jake] looked at me and said, 'Your phone is going to be like that all day.' It was true. I thought about going to sleep after that first 5 o'clock rush of calls, and he said, 'Don't go to sleep. Who knows when this will happen again. Stay up. Have some coffee.'"

VANESSA & LYNN REDGRAVE

Vanessa has been nominated for six Academy Awards, including a 1978 win for Julia. Her little sister, who died in 2010, was nominated for Georgy Girl and Gods and Monsters.

ETHEL & LIONEL BARRYMORE

Ethel and Lionel, along with their brother John (who was actress Drew Barrymore's grandfather), were a legendary trio of actors. The siblings all appeared together in 1932's Rasputin and the Empress.

Ethel won Best Supporting Actress in 1945 for None But the Lonely Heart, and was nominated three other times. Lionel, who was one year older, won the 1931 Best Actor prize for A Free Soul and was also nominated for Best Director in 1930.

ETHAN & JOEL COEN

Known collectively as the Coen Brothers, Ethan and Joel have shared 13 nominations and four wins. Joel was also nominated for Best Director for Fargo, while Ethan was recognized in the Best Picture category for the film, bringing each of their total nominations to 14.

The duo took home three statues in 2008 for No Country for Old Men, for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

JENNIFER & MEG TILLY

The sisters can each boast of one Oscar nomination. Jennifer was up for Best Supporting Actress in 1995 for Bullets Over Broadway and Meg was in the same category in 1986 for Agnes of God.

CASEY & BEN AFFLECK

Ben was 25 when he took home his first Oscar in 1998 for Best Original Screenplay. In his acceptance speech, the Good Will Hunting writer thanked his "brilliant" little brother, who also had a small role in the film. The elder Affleck also claimed the award for Best Picture for 2012's Argo.

Meanwhile, Casey's first nod from the Academy came in 2008 for his supporting role in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and he won Best Actor at the 2017 ceremony for his emotional turn in Manchester by the Sea.

"It would be historically the first time brothers would win something separately, and not just the brothers winning, but this will be the very first time someone would win an Oscar who didn't brush his teeth from ages 10-14," Ben joked about his brother's nomination on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

JANE & PETER FONDA

The iconic actress has been nominated for a total of seven Academy Awards. She won Best Actress in 1972 and 1979 for Klute and Coming Home, respectively. Younger brother Peter scored a Best Actor nod for 1997's Ulee's Gold and a Best Adapted Screenplay nod for 1969's Easy Rider.

RIVER & JOAQUIN PHOENIX

Before his untimely death in 1993 at the age of 23, River was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in 1988's Running on Empty. Joaquin, who was four years his junior, has since been nominated in acting categories three times for Gladiator, Walk the Line and The Master.

In 2015, Joaquin joined his three sisters and mother in presenting the first-ever River Phoenix Humanitarian Award at PETA's 35th anniversary celebration.
