From Breakup to Reconciliation: Inside Amber Heard and Elon Musk's Roller Coaster Relationship

"They're definitely back together," a source close to the couple tells PEOPLE

It’s official: Amber Heard and Elon Musk are back together.

The duo were spotted holding hands as they left a sushi restaurant in Los Angeles together on Monday night.

“They’re definitely back together,” a source close to the couple tells PEOPLE.

So what led to the reconciliation? Despite breaking up over their increasingly busy schedules in August, Musk never gave up their relationship.

“Ever since she returned to LA from Australia, Elon wanted to give their relationship a second try,”a source close to Musk tells PEOPLE. “Amber makes him very happy. He finds her brilliant in an artistic way.”

But while the couple appeared to be all smiles when they stepped out together, their relationship hasn’t always been so easy, breezy.

Here’s a look back at Heard and Musk’s roller coaster relationship:

Bonding Over Heartbreak

Heard and Musk were first linked together in 2016 as each was weathering a public breakup: Heard and actor Johnny Depp finalized their divorce in January, while Musk filed for divorce from Westworld actress Talulah Riley in early 2016.

The Aquaman star and Musk, whose fortune has been estimated at $15 billion, were first seen together in Miami, where they were both staying at the Delano South Beach in July 2016. Two weeks later, they were again spotted together at a London nightclub.

Amid speculation about a romance, a source told PEOPLE at the time, “Amber and Elon are friends and have been for a few years.”

Later that summer, the source confirmed a Hollywood Reporter report that Musk sent emails to Machete Kills director Robert Rodriguez in 2013 asking to meet Heard, but added that the tech mogul simply likes to get to know “interesting people from all different industries.”

Making It Public

The actress and the billionaire mogul seemed to confirm rumors when they stepped out together for the first time in public in April 2017 while visiting Australia.

The couple spent the day at the Gold Coast’s Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, where they walked arm-in-arm through the reserve and held hands as they took part in a zipline ropes course.

Later that night, Heard shared a photo of herself resting her arm against Musk, a kiss mark clearly visible on his cheek. Musk also shared a similar photo on his own account.

Getting Serious

In May, Heard spent the day with Musk’s five sons while sightseeing in Australia over the weekend. The actress shared a few snaps from their day out, showing the group goofing off together at the Sydney Opera House.

Musk’s sons — Damian, Kai, Saxon, Xavier, Griffin — are from his marriage to his first wife, Justine. (The couple had another son, Nevada, who died at 10 weeks.)

Calling It Quits

After just over a year of dating, Heard and Musk decided to call it quits due to their increasingly busy schedules.

“They had fun for a few months, but are both very busy with work now. It was getting hard to find time to see each other,” a source told PEOPLE at the time. “Elon’s is working day and night. This is his life and he loves it. He is in no position to be in a relationship right now and ended it.”

But Heard and Musk assured fans that they were still friends.

In a joint statement, the pair told PEOPLE exclusively: “Having read recent articles about our relationship, we would like to speak for ourselves. The distance has been really tough on our relationship, because we haven’t been able to see each other much. All relationships have their ups and downs, of course.

“People occasionally send out speculation, which has no basis in fact, without our knowledge, believing that that they have our best interests in mind. Sometimes, other agendas are at work. It can get a little weird… However, we would like to state directly that we have the utmost respect for one another, and it would be troubling if anyone had the impression that we thought otherwise.

“As a closing note, it is worth bearing in mind that events are always amplified and dramatized in a high profile relationship, whether the people involved like it or not (and we definitely don’t). The reality is that this is just a normal relationship with a giant magnifying glass applied.”

Dealing with Heartbreak

Shortly after breaking up, Musk admitted that he was heartbroken over the end of their relationship.

“Well, she broke up with me more than I broke up with her, I think,” Musk told Rolling Stone after the breakup. “I was really in love, and it hurt bad.”

Spending Time Together Again

However, it didn’t take long for the couple to prove that they just can’t stay away. They were spotted out together in Australia just days after news of their split emerged.

A source also told PEOPLE “they spent New Years together” — plus they were seen vacationing together in Chile at the end of December, enjoying dinner with friends who included Musk’s brother Kimbal.

Heard and Musk also made headlines a few days before Christmas when they were photographed sharing a kiss outside of a Los Angeles restaurant.
