Law Roach Says Picking a Favorite Zendaya Look Is ‘Like Calling Out Your Favorite Child’: ‘Never Do That’ (Exclusive)

“We’ve been together for over a decade and we’ve just done so many looks,” the fashion designer told PEOPLE

Behind Zendaya’s head-turning outfits is Law Roach’s stylish touch.

But the stylist — who has collaborated with the Emmy winner, 28, on red carpet outfits since 2011 — exclusively told PEOPLE at New York Fashion Week on Sunday, Sept. 8, that he “can’t” pick his favorite Zendaya look.

“I can’t say I have a favorite because they all mean so much,” said Roach, 46, at the Christian Cowan show. “We’ve been together for over a decade, and we’ve just done so many looks.”

“There are some ones that are super special, but it’s like calling out your favorite child. You should never do that,” he further explained.

Roach, however, gave insight into what makes an outfit stand out.

“Confidence. It’s all about confidence. You can wear anything you want no matter your size, age, anything. It’s all about confidence,” he said, adding that people “can learn all about that” in his new book, How to Build a Fashion Icon: Notes on Confidence from the World's Only Image Architect

Among the fan-favorite Roach collaborations is Zendaya’s butt-baring 1995 Mugler robot bodysuit she wore during the Dune: Part Two press tour, which she later told Vogue made her “really lightheaded.”

“Immediately after wearing it for 10 minutes or less than that, I got really lightheaded,” the actress said in April. “The metal conducts and holds onto heat very quickly and traps it in. I’m wearing a complete bodysuit.”

Another standout moment for the duo came in 2019, when Zendaya wore a Tommy Hilfiger fairy tale ballgown, inspired by Cinderella, that lit up when Roach waved his magic wand on the Met Gala red carpet.

Their longtime fashion web continued in 2021, when Zendaya rocked a plunging Valentino Haute Couture cobweb gown at the red carpet premiere of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which she attended with boyfriend Tom Holland.

In a May 2024 interview for The Cutting Room Floor, Roach credited the Euphoria star for helping build his confidence over the years.

“She was always the one advocating for me and making sure I was in these rooms that people thought I didn’t belong in," the stylist said. “Even as a young girl, I’m talking about 16, 17 years old.”

Roach first styled Zendaya 13 years ago for the red carpet premiere of Justin Bieber’s 2011 Never Say Never documentary. At the event, she wore a silver metallic blazer and a gray skirt over black tights.

“We’ve sat in boardrooms with clients and companies and CEOs and they would try to make me invisible and she would say, ‘Law has something to say,’ ” Roach recalled. “It was like those small, little things that always when someone would try to take the power, she would hand it right back to me."
