Kacey Musgraves 'Almost Got Blown Off' an Icelandic Cliff While Filming Music Video: 'It Was Treacherous'

The country star also recalled getting a speeding ticket in Iceland while trying to see the Northern Lights with her manager

Kacey Musgraves did her best to enjoy a recent trip to Iceland, but the country had other plans for her.

In a new interview on The Tonight Show, the country music star opened up about nearly getting "blown off" a cliff while filming a music video in Iceland due to wind and later accidentally breaking the law in an attempt to see the northern lights.

"We picked literally the worst possible week to go. I was so excited. It was on my bucket list," said Musgraves, 35, of going to Iceland to film the music video for her song "Deeper Well," which shares a title with her sixth studio album that dropped Friday.

Unfortunately, the weather wasn't ideal. "It was, like, high wind advisories. I almost got blown off that cliff," she said. "Like, ‘This video will be my death announcement.’ It was a sheer drop down to the ocean. I mean, it was treacherous. Even the locals were like, ‘This is some scary s---.’"

Musgraves had a couple destinations she wanted to visit in Iceland, including the Blue Lagoon in Grindavík. "You see the pictures. It’s so serene. People are floating. It looks like a nirvana experience. I’m like, ‘Let’s do that,'" she recalled. "So we venture out there, and no. It’s sort of like an Instagram-versus-reality situation. We get there, and it’s hurricane-force winds."

The Grammy winner previously documented the less-than-stellar Blue Lagoon experience in a TikTok video, in which she shielded her complimentary beer from the powerful waves.

"I’m surprised they didn’t close down the thing. There was only a few locals there and then us, and we were getting body-slammed by waves," said Musgraves, later noting that the trip was ultimately "really fun" and an experience she'll "never forget."

However, the Blue Lagoon wasn't the end of the "High Horse" singer's eventful trip. "Iceland, like, it delivered, but it also didn’t at the same time. All I wanted to see was the northern lights," she explained.

Despite the "terrible" weather plaguing their Iceland visit, Musgraves and her team were determined to see the northern lights. “On the last night, it was the best possible conditions, so we’re like, ‘Maybe we’ll get to see it.’ One of my sweet managers, Bobby, he’s backstage. He’s such a champ. He went into dad mode. He’s like, ‘I know you want to see the Northern Lights, kid,’" she said.

The "Follow Your Arrow" performer continued, "We were all so, so tired from this rigorous shooting, but he’s like, ‘If you want to go see the Northern Lights, I’ll take you. We’ve got the rental van. It looks like the clearest spot’s gonna be about two-and-a-half hours from here, but we can do it.’ I was like, ‘I mean, YOLO, Bobby. We only live once.’”

Committed, the pair embarked on the adventure — despite having "a really early call time the next morning." They drove for a couple hours in "pitch-black" nighttime and eventually began wondering when they'd see the northern lights.

After potentially landing a "faint" spotting, they remained committed. "So, we went a little further, and we were like, ‘I think maybe that’s them. I think that’s them,’” said Musgraves. “I was like, ‘Alright, I’ll take it.’ So we just were like, ‘Alright, it’s late. We’ve got an early call time in the morning.’ So we’re speeding, we’re speeding back to the hotel and just taking our little northern lights experience and just trying to be satisfied enough with that."

Upon returning home to the United States, they were issued a stark reminder of the trip. "About two weeks later, Bobby gets something in the mail, and apparently we broke the law in Iceland," she said.

“We got a speeding ticket…by mail. It was a printed-out piece of paper. It was $10, so it was worth it, obviously," added Musgraves. "But yeah, I actually framed it for Bobby for Christmas. But what’s funny about it is they included a photo. I never saw anything take our photo.”
