June Carter Cash's Legacy Explored by Dolly Parton and Reese Witherspoon in Trailer for Paramount+'s 'June': Watch!

One of the most influential women in country music history’s story is being told.

The upcoming Paramount+ documentary June is set to explore the life and career of June Carter Cash, the iconic country singer-songwriter and second wife to Johnny Cash. 

Ahead of the film’s streaming release on Jan. 16, the trailer dropped on Wednesday. 

The brief teaser offers a glimpse at archival footage featured in the film directed by Emmy-winning documentarian Kristen Vaurio, a first-look at the A-list talking heads and asks the film’s central question, “Who is June Carter Cash?” — considering her many accomplishments and how she often lived in the shadow of her husband’s celebrity.

“Who is June Carter Cash?” country singer Kacey Musgraves asks at the start of the trailer. “Well, she’s a badass bitch, first off.” 

The clip goes on to tease how the documentary charts her rise in music, from her early days performing in her family’s Americana group The Carters to collaborating with Cash and writing one of his biggest hits, “Ring of Fire.”

According to the trailer, June revisits how the "Keep on the Sunny Side" singer and the “I Walk the Line” singer met — with an old video of Carter Cash telling the story herself — and chronicles their marriage, which lasted from 1968 until their deaths in 2003. 

“She was tough and she was funny. If you’re married to Johnny Cash, you gotta be tough,” says Willie Nelson, who is among the interviewees, at one point.

According to a press release, June features never-before-seen archival material from throughout the Grammy winner’s career, including her stint as an actress, as well as rare interviews with the late star (who died in 2003 at age 73).

Along with intimate interviews with members of her family, a handful of fellow country artists, friends and longtime admirers provide commentary. Nelson, Dolly Parton, Ronnie Dunn, Larry Gatlin, her costar on the 1997 film The Apostle Robert Duvall and Reese Witherspoon — who won an Oscar for portraying her in 2005’s Walk the Line — all make appearances. 

Below the trailer, June’s official tagline reads: “June Carter Cash was a legend hiding in plain sight. Don't miss the story of talent, ambition, heartbreak and loyalty.”

While the “Tall Lover Man” singer and the Man in Black collaborated throughout their marriage, releasing four studio albums and frequently touring together, Carter Cash had a fruitful solo career, as well. Not only did her fame with The Carters predate their marriage, she released four solo albums — two of which became Grammy-winners — was posthumously inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame in 2009 and remains an inspiration to women in country, among other feats.

June debuts on Paramount+ on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
