"If Ryan gets his panties in a bunch over it, then so be it," the Oscar-winning 'Titanic' director says, looking back on Gosling's 2017 skit 'Papyrus'

James Cameron knows how to appreciate a good joke, even at his own expense.

In conversation with PEOPLE to tout the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Titanic 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition, the award-winning director jokingly addresses the time Ryan Gosling poked fun at his decision to use Papyrus, a default Microsoft font, for the Avatar logo. "The font thing's funny," says Cameron, 69.

Fans of Saturday Night Live may recall that the Barbie star took part in a 2017 skit aptly titled "Papyrus" in which he plays an individual who can't wrap his head around Cameron's decision to use the relatively common letter style, which has been a default font on computers since the release of Microsoft Office 97.

“He just highlighted Avatar, he clicked the dropdown menu and he just randomly selected Papyrus,” Gosling said to a therapist in the skit. “Like a, like a thoughtless child, just wandering by a garden, just yanking leaves along the way…"

In response, Cameron jokes to PEOPLE: "I mean, the thing is, we actually now had a dilemma on movie two. It's like, 'Are we going to keep the same font, the highest-grossing film in history, or are we going to change it?' Mess with the formula. It's like, 'F--- it, we're using the font. If Ryan gets his panties in a bunch over it, then so be it."

Cameron's Avatar sequel, 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water, grossed a colossal $2.3 billion worldwide but didn't unseat Avatar's throne, which stands as the highest-grossing film of all time with $2.9 billion.

Despite the jokes made about his film's logo, Cameron still maintains, "I love Saturday Night Live."

"You've got to be able to laugh with and at yourself on Saturday Night Live," the Oscar winner continues. "They had me light a cigar off a hundred-dollar bill after Titanic became the highest-grossing film in history. First of all, I don't smoke cigars... and I'd never light a hundred-dollar bill on fire. It'd be a bad thing for my kids to see, but it's funny."

Both Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water will be available in 4K Ultra HD via digital retailers on Dec. 12, and on Blu-ray disc on Dec. 19. Titanic is now available for the first time ever remastered on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc.
