The actor has played Gabriel, the on-again-off-again love interest to Emily (Lily Collins), since season 1 of the show. But after season 4 saw his character "being slowly turned into guacamole," in Bravo's words, he "really grew apart from him." "The ‘sexy chef’ was very much part of me in season 1 and we grew apart season after season because of the choices he makes and because of the direction they make him take," Bravo, 36, told IndieWire. "I’ve never been so far away from him." Lucas Bravo Retreated to the Mountains After Initial Rejection for Emily in Paris: 'I Could Just Talk to Birds' (Exclusive) Where there was "a lot of me in him" in the first season, Bravo said "it kind of became not fun for me to shoot" throughout the show as Gabriel was "unaware of his surroundings, of the dynamic, always victimizing and always being completely lost in translation and oblivious to anything that is happening around him and being manipulated by everyone." "I really want to see if Gabriel gets back to his fun, cheeky, playful, alive self. Because three seasons playing melancholic, sad, depressed, and lost is not fun anymore. It’s a comedy, everybody is having fun around me, everybody is jumping around, and I’m just slowly sinking into god knows what.” Lily Collins as Emily, Lucas Bravo as Gabriel in 'Emily in Paris' season 4. Stephanie Branchu/Netflix It's gotten to a point that the storyline "makes me question if I want to be part of season 5," Bravo admitted as he revealed, "My contract ends at season 4." Bravo also noted the "lack of risk" on set, and he told the outlet, “I tried for seasons to bring nuances but we don’t have much liberty on set. We cannot change a word or an emotion. They know what they want and we just have to comply." Lily Collins Was 'So Happy' That Emily Finally 'Breaks Down' in Emily in Paris Season 4 (Exclusive) His exit is not a certainty in any capacity, though, as he said, "I love the show. It started everything for me. I love the show and the people in it. With saying that, I feel like I am not being nice or grateful, but when you love something you want it to be…you want the best version of it. I’m not going to lie, I’ve been frustrated with the direction my character is taking." After breaking up with Gabriel, a chance meet-cute on the mountain with Italian heartthrob Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini) leads to a whirlwind weekend in Rome for Emily — and she ends up accepting a new job running Agence Grateau's office in Rome. Collins, 35, told PEOPLE of the plot twist, "I wasn't surprised because there's so many ups and downs within that relationship, and knowing that this new character [Marcello] was coming into play, I kind of knew there would be something afoot from [creator] Darren [Star]. Because you're always surprised by Darren." Seasons 1-4 of Emily in Paris can be streamed on Netflix. Close
