Entertainment Awards Shows and Events Golden Globes These Latinos Deserve a Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award Too By Frances Solá-Santiago Published on January 11, 2018 01:26PM EST 01 of 09 Paul Drinkwater/NBCUniversal/Getty When Oprah Winfrey accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 Golden Globes on Jan. 7, she made history as the first black woman to receive the prestigious honor. And, in true Oprah fashion, she addressed the lack of minority representation: “There are some little girls watching as I become the first black woman to be given this same award," she said. Oprah's win is certainly a step forward for equal representation at the Golden Globes, and our hope is that the awards show will soon reflect the outstanding contributions of Latino entertainers, too. Sadly, no Latino has ever won the Globes' lifetime achievement award. Here are eight Latin artists we believe deserve the esteemed award: 02 of 09 Rita Moreno (Getty Images) The Puerto Rican actress is one of 12 people in the world who's won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony with a career spanning over 60 years. She earned an Oscar for her work as Anita in the film adaptation of West Side Story, two Primetime Emmys for her performances in The Rockford Files and The Muppet Show, a Grammy for her work on the children’s album Electric Company, and Tony for her work on The Ritz. Moreno was also the original voice of legendary animated character Carmen Sandiego in Where on Earth is Carmen Sandeigo? Most recently, she’s starred in the One Day at a Time reboot, Jane the Virgin and Grace and Frankie. 03 of 09 Chita Rivera Kat Fitzgerald The half-Puerto Rican actress and singer made history in musical theater with roles in West Side Story and Chicago. She was the first Latina to be honored by the Kennedy Center in 2002. She’s won two Tony Awards for her work in The Rink and Kiss of the Spider Woman. Rivera also starred alongside Shirley MacLaine in the 1969 classic Sweet Charlie. 04 of 09 Edward James Olmos (Photo by Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic) The Mexican-American actor has graced the small and big screens for more than 40 years with roles in Selena, West Wing, and Blade Runner. He won Golden Globes for his work in TV films Miami Vice and The Burning Season, and earned an Oscar nod for Stand and Deliver. The actor, who received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1992, recently starred in the award-winning animated film Coco. 05 of 09 John Leguizamo Instagram/People en Español The prolific actor, writer, and comedian has worked in film, TV, and theater with roles in Moulin Rouge, Ice Age, and his own comedy specials Ghetto Klown, Sexaholix… A Love Story, and Spic-O-Rama. Last year, the actor premiered his play Latin History for Morons on Broadway. The New York-raised artist voiced Sid in the Ice Age movies and has appeared in foreign films such as Love In the Time of Cholera. He’s received nominations from the Golden Globes and SAG Awards and won a Primetime Emmy trophy in 1998. 06 of 09 Salma Hayek Capture Pix/REX/Shutterstock The Mexican actress earned worldwide acclaim portraying iconic visual artist Frida Kahlo in the eponymously titled film, which earned her Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. Though she started her career in TV, Hayek has made a name for herself as a film actress with roles in Desperado, opposite Antonio Banderas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, as the voice of Esmeralda, and Bandidas, alongside Penélope Cruz. She’s also a producer and director with her own production company, Ventanarosa. She's worked behind the camera in films such as El Coronel No Tiene Quien Le Escriba and Frida and TV shows like Ugly Betty. 07 of 09 Antonio Banderas Juan Naharro/WireImage/Getty Images The Málaga-born actor has played legendary roles such as El Zorro, Puss in Boots, Desperado, and Spy Kids. He’s received a Goya Award— the equivalent of a Cecil B. DeMille Award in Spain— and multiple Golden Globe nominations for his work in The Mask of Zorro, Evita, and And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself. Banderas is also internationally acclaimed for his work in Pedro Almodóvar films Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! and The Skin I Live In. 08 of 09 Gloria Estefan Paul Morigi/Getty Images The Cuban-American actress, singer, and businesswoman is one of the most iconic names in Latino entertainment. Last year, she became the first Cuban-American to be honored by the Kennedy Center. She started her career in the 1970s with the Miami Sound Machine. Alongside her husband Emilio Estefan, she produced and wrote the musical On Your Feet! based on their journey together, which premiered on Broadway in 2015. She’s also written two children books The Magically Mysterious Adventures of Noelle the Bulldog and Noelle's Treasure Tale. Currently, she serves on Univision’s board of directors, where she was appointed in 2007. Estefan has also delved into the service industry opening Cuban-themed restaurants in Miami. 09 of 09 Andy Garcia Stefanie Keenan/Getty The Cuban actor has graced the big screen since the 1970s with roles in blockbusters like The Godfather III, Ocean’s Eleven, Ocean’s Twelve, and Ocean’s Thirteen.
