I’m a firm believer that cultivating habitual optimism can be your superpower in helping to build a more positive company culture. Here’s why… 1. 🔄 Reframe the Challenges: Optimism helps you present barriers and obstacles as opportunities for growth, innovation and continuous improvement. I’m not suggesting we ignore problems, but approach them instead with a 'how can we?' attitude. 2. 🤝 Build Trust: As we know, trust is a vital ingredient in internal comms. In my experience, when you consistently communicate with a positive outlook, you build credibility and trust with colleagues. People are more likely to engage with and believe in optimistic messengers (your leaders). 3. 🚀 Boosts Morale: Optimistic communication can be contagious. Stories of success, improvements and overcoming challenges lifts the spirits of employees, especially if they’re personal achievements penned by colleagues. This creates a more positive work environment, even during tough times. 4. 💡 Sparks Creativity: An optimistic approach encourages creativity. It opens minds to ‘What if’ thinking and new possibilities that pessimism might overlook. 5. 🏆 Drives Engagement: When people feel positive about their work and your company's strategic direction, they're more likely to actively participate and contribute their ideas. You can channel that energy into bettering customer experience, exploring market growth opportunities, operational excellence or simply improving ways of working. There is a very deliberate reason for why I chose the 25th November 2024 for our first Business and Babies summit - and why I picked Resilience as the theme. One year ago, I was a business owner with a newborn baby receiving daily phone calls from the mental health crisis team who were concerned that I was a risk to myself, while I also continued to run my business. In that darkness, I could not see the light. But it was there. Flickering in the distance. One year later, I will be standing on the Business and Babies stage in front of an audience of amazing, ambitious mothers and businesswomen who I have brought together through my sheer hard work, stubborn mindedness, and determination to say “It shouldn’t have to cost your mental health. And it’s not a price I am prepared to let you pay on my watch.” It’s not often I am proud of myself - but this is one of those moments. As a mother of two daughters, I will NOT encourage or advocate women into entrepreneurship until we have proper infrastructure in place that ACTUALLY supports them. Until the price they pay for wanting to be both mothers and business owners is not their sanity. And until that isn’t the price we’re paying, I don’t want to know about any fancy entrepreneurship campaign being ran to advocate for more women to start their own businesses. I don’t want to hear fancy big numbers on how much they could add to the economy. I cannot reasonably encourage women - and maybe even my own daughters one day - down a path that I know could destroy their mental health. I want women to be supported. The fact when you Google why female entrepreneurs struggle/fail etc, and the answers all revolve around lack of funding / investment speaks volumes about how scared many are to speak out and say actually (while for many it may be lack of investment, and I am not doubting this), it’s actually because I am trying to balance two diametrically opposed highly demanding worlds, with minimal financial support, in a society that doesn’t understand. And I need you to hear me. See me. Recognise me. Support me. This is the precipice of change. We need light to be able to see in the dark. The switch has been turned on. We cannot solve what we can’t put words to. Here is the space for those words. Watch us speak.

Is consumer confidence HIGH or LOW right now? That's the question I was asked to answer on my regular segment on Sky News last Saturday. The answer? Both. While the consumer confidence index did take a slight dip in March, it's actually higher than it was this time last year. And when you consider the rise in interest rates and cost of living pressures in that time, consumer confidence is relatively strong right now. I shared my thoughts on why and also discussed the consumer trend towards feel-good, optimistic marketing. In other words, share in the hope for an optimistic future with your customers (even better - inspire them to think that way) and you will win their hearts, minds and share of wallet. Kia ora koutou, Last week, like many of us, I had to take sick leave after my daughter gifted me her sore throat and cold germs #mumlife Fortunately, I have a team that encourages you to rest when you need and friends that remind me to decolonise the way I think about self-care but it wasn’t always this way. Post-lockdowns, we’re all more aware of the importance of keeping a respectful distance but actually stopping to rest still seems like a new concept for me. Coming from the private sector and being a little too driven for my own good at times, the urge to ‘keep pushing through’ is strong in this one. I’d seen this bug develop into a cough and make family members lose their voices, but the breakthrough came after one day of rest (and Betadine Sore Throat Gargle) when I managed to completely dodge the throat infection. The cold has been stubborn, but no doubt would have been a lot worse without a couple of days in bed. Rest meant I missed the worst of it and was able to get back in action sooner. It did make me think about the importance of work culture and how our communities aren’t set up to support us like they used to be. I know a lot of parents, business owners and workaholics who don’t feel like they can take the time off. A couple I know who don’t stop until their bodies make them. Not advisable. So, hopefully this can be a reminder (mostly to myself) to take the time off to recover and be okay with cancelled plans or pushed out deadlines. Also to show some manaaki to your sick mates. They will appreciate it and will likely return the favour when you inevitably get taken down by the sickness (mihi to my food parcel friend). One of the best moves I've made was three years ago when we packed up our desks and office plants in Stones Corner to relocate to our very own building in South Brisbane. The shift profoundly impacted Elevate's operations and culture - far beyond economic opportunities and the ability to customise our space. 🚗 We chose a location with ample free parking for staff, making commutes faster and more enjoyable. Team members who used to rush in late, stressed from finding parking blocks away, now arrive relaxed and on time. Most of the time! :-). 🔌 Speaking of parking, we also have two reserved spots for clients and guests. For those with electric cars, our new EV charger powers their vehicles while we power their business. 🏢 We've been able to configure the building to meet our needs and preferences: an open-plan collaborative working space downstairs, and an open-plan kitchen, meeting rooms, and a flexible boardroom upstairs, catering from 5 to 65 in the room. One thing I've learned is that pPhysical space promotes creative space. 🤝 Our central location is much closer to the CBD than before, fostering greater accessibility and stronger client relationships. As we celebrate our third anniversary, we reaffirm our commitment to a workplace that champions flexibility, collaboration, and sustainability.
