Sooorya EV is committed to achieving India’s energy independence by 2047, and implores everyone in the energy & mobility ecosystem to strive for the same too… “A new report by the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) outlines a strategic roadmap for India to achieve energy independence in its mobility sector by 2047. The report, titled “India at 2047: A Vision for Energy Independence in the Mobility Sector,” emphasizes the urgent need for a nationwide shift to electric vehicles (EVs) across all road transport segments. RMI’s analysis reveals that India could drastically reduce its dependence on crude oil imports by ensuring that 100% of new vehicle sales are clean fuel (primarily electric) by 2043. This transition is projected to cut crude oil consumption in the road transport sector by 91%, resulting in cumulative savings of INR 160 lakh crore (US$ 1,923 billion). There are consistent rumors of a partnership between M&M and Skoda/VW for the India business. Recent one is M&M investing ~$1 bn for 50% stake in Skoda Auto VW India entity. An equity deal (similar to JSW-MG deal) can actually be beneficial to both the parties. Let's see how: (1) Mahindra can get access to the VW's global vehicle architecture and to their hybrid/EV technology (depends on contours of deal). Hybrid is a technology which is missing from M&M's portfolio and is a key risk to their new energy transition strategy. Not only M&M gets to play the PV market with another premium brand, they get access to future ready technologies - this will make them the only India OEM with access to all technologies. (2) For Skoda/VW, their market share in India is miniscule given their global position. Scale is India would be key to get the cost economics right and launch future models. An equity partnership with M&M not only dilutes their risk but also will provide them with an opportunity to get 50% share of a larger business (just look at how Toyota has scaled up post their partnership with Maruti). The key to leadership success remain in strategic thinking, drafting clear vision, right Team selection and giving free hand to get the results. If team is selected right and given freedom for decision making, results are not away. However trying to do Micromanagement and not having trust on team, or not working to build team capabilities are sure reasons of failures.
