ANOTHER GREAT "START-UP"!? Terria has picked up a little Christmas bonus with a $3M pay day. So that's great news all round and another shining example of Australian innovation and invention. #Bravo Ana Belgun, Amber Standley and the team. But at 10 years old is it really a "start-up"? Surely by now it's mature IP with some monster potential. And given that there's a $50 billion growth in the geospatial data market coming over the next 3 years alone, we should really be getting the Aussie hype team out and banging as many drums as we can as loudly as possible on their behalf. Of course, I'm sure the team at Terria is all over this, and I look forward to hearing of their future successes, but I can't help but wonder why we tend to be hide our lights under a bushel. As Bill Bryson said, Australia is like California with cricket. If that's so, it's clearly time we employed a little more American style hyperbole to help us build a software industry like that of our cousins. Here's what good looks like for Public-Private "partnerships" promoting Australian innovation (globally relevant IP) and creating new Australian careers (outside of property and mining): 1. Good Company with good co-founders (mix of commerce and science), proper corporate finance strategy effected day 1. 2. Good university (ANU) approach to letting go early and not grabbing too much of the cap table (public research institutions which take too much or wait too long before trying to let go (TRL 6+) disempower founders, not fully respect private capital runway...strand IP and do the nation a disservice..Harrumph). 3. Good legal entity structure (US Top Co with Aust Pty Ltd). 4. Good crowd-in-finance approach by Sovereign Capital with Corporate Venture Capital and Institutional capital. Breakthrough Victoria is a game changer. Picking winners, but alongside private capital to build cap table resilience and keep sufficient mind share in Australia. 5. Good use of a Convertible Note (an often overused, lazy financial instrument which kicks the can down the road and creates tail risks when it is not a true bridge to IP milestones). As the founder of Workstem, I’ve always been passionate about reimagining the mission-critical process of properly paying people in Australia. Several years ago, we set out to address this challenge, and after extensive research, we concluded that to deliver a perfect payslip, three well-established processes must be harmonised: Onboarding, Workforce Management, and Payroll. Onboarding is the starting point. When a new employee joins a company, it’s crucial to set them up with a consistent Master File or People Record that remains intact throughout the entire workflow. Additionally, linking new employees to the relevant award from the outset is essential. Workforce Management encompasses various elements, including time capture, time management, rostering, leave management, employee self-service, and, most critically, proper award interpretation. Capturing time accurately and converting it into a gross wages file is the foundation for a flawless payslip. A modern Payroll System is the final piece of the puzzle. However, the challenge lies in ensuring compliance with ever-changing ATO mandates, such as STP-2 and superannuation requirements. Most sizeable employers in Australia have systems for onboarding, workforce management, and payroll. This raises an important question: If everyone has a system, why did Fair Work collect over $1 billion in payroll remediation for 635,000 underpaid workers in the past two financial years? This morning the fabulous CORE Innovation Hub team hosted an incredible automation and robotics showcase at the Australian Automation and Robotics Precinct (AARP) during West Tech Fest. In the world of automation and robotics, it's easy to get caught up in the machines, algorithms, and tech on display. Our human skills; the ability to pivot, to troubleshoot, to see connections where others don't – are the true drivers of innovation. This morning was one of those days that you only get when working in start up land... my day started early using power tools to clear sand and debris, then troubleshooting a coffee machine, setting up safety zones, then test driving an electric vehicle, coordinating tech demo logistics + more... these moments showcase what is is to be human. We're not just operators; we're activators, coordinators, problem-solvers who breathe life into technology. As the Responsible Innovation Lead at the AARP, my role transcends traditional boundaries and job description. It's about understanding that technology is an extension of human capability, not a replacement for it. The startup ecosystem celebrates this – demanding versatility, encouraging cross-functional thinking, and valuing the human ability to adapt and overcome. In automation and robotics, our most sophisticated technology is still guided by human intuition, creativity and curiosity. Today's big news 📰 🗞 🌏 Aussie Tech’s Climate Crisis: Start-ups Face Capital Crunch 💸 **By Yolanda Redrup, Rich List co-editor** 🚨 At least 100 Australian climate tech start-ups are at risk of shutting down in the next nine months without an urgent capital injection, threatening to set the industry’s growth back years, according to the sector’s leading community network. The frank admission from climate tech community organisation, Climate Salad, comes after high-profile hydrogen aviation pioneer Universal Hydrogen collapsed last week, having burnt through almost $150 million. 💥 Universal Hydrogen’s cash had come from investors including Australian Peter Barrett’s fund Playground Global and @Andrew Forrest’s Fortescue, as well as Airbus Ventures, Toyota Motor Corporation, and GE. It had been unable to raise additional capital and an attempt to merge with Florida-based Silver Airways had failed. ❌ Climate Salad co-founder Mick Liubinskas warned that with more than one-sixth of the 600 companies in the group needing to raise capital just to survive the year, Universal Hydrogen’s fate could be a portent of locally based casualties. ⚠️ ### 🌉 Bridging the Gap “We’ve built a lot of momentum in the last three years, it’s gone from a whole new industry to 600 companies, and we’re on the cusp of the industry globally being big enough to support it. But, we need a one-year bridge,” he said. 🌱 “We need a mix of government, venture, and mixed financing with an international focus. I’d love to think the National Reconstruction Fund Corporation can bridge the gap, but will it move quickly enough, and will it take enough risk to support this new industry? 🌍 ### 💵 The Capital Requirements The capital requirements for any deep tech start-ups with a manufacturing component are also more extensive than software companies, often prioritized by VCs. 🏭 “There’s a real public interest and desire to see a dramatic shift in emissions and see us moving the dial. It’s great there’s so much attention on it, but it’s a double-edged sword – there’s more competition of early-stage start-ups trying to solve very similar problems in similar ways competing for scarce resources,” Cicada Innovations chief executive Sally-Ann Williams FTSE said. 🌿 Despite the concerns of the start-ups, it is not all doom and gloom for the climate tech sector, with new quarterly numbers from Cut Through Venture showing that climate and clean tech was the second most popular category in local deals in the second quarter. 📈 It tracked $344 million of investment across ten deals, placing it behind fintech, but ahead of biotech and artificial intelligence. 💡 ### 🏆 VC's on the hunt There are eight climate tech venture funds currently in the market trying to raise, including climate advisory group Pollination and VC funds Jekara Group and Tenacious Ventures.
