This morning the fabulous CORE Innovation Hub team hosted an incredible automation and robotics showcase at the Australian Automation and Robotics Precinct (AARP) during West Tech Fest. In the world of automation and robotics, it's easy to get caught up in the machines, algorithms, and tech on display. Our human skills; the ability to pivot, to troubleshoot, to see connections where others don't – are the true drivers of innovation. This morning was one of those days that you only get when working in start up land... my day started early using power tools to clear sand and debris, then troubleshooting a coffee machine, setting up safety zones, then test driving an electric vehicle, coordinating tech demo logistics + more... these moments showcase what is is to be human. We're not just operators; we're activators, coordinators, problem-solvers who breathe life into technology. As the Responsible Innovation Lead at the AARP, my role transcends traditional boundaries and job description. It's about understanding that technology is an extension of human capability, not a replacement for it. The startup ecosystem celebrates this – demanding versatility, encouraging cross-functional thinking, and valuing the human ability to adapt and overcome. In automation and robotics, our most sophisticated technology is still guided by human intuition, creativity and curiosity. This comprehensive new report from CSIRO in Australia explores the case for the creation of sovereign AI foundation models, given their dependency on models developed elsewhere - a similar situation to the current state here in Aotearoa. Elanor Huntington, CSIRO Director of Digital, National Facilities & Collections says "But they are rarely made in Australia. The vast majority come from the United States and China. Our industry is becoming increasingly dependent on these models. On one hand this is an opportunity. All these great tools are appearing at our fingertips. But there is also risk. Will these models boost the competitive interest of Australian companies and workers? Will they behave according to our norms, cultural and ethical expectations? Can we be adapting, fine-tuning or building our own AI foundation models to support our own industry and workers? If so, how should we go about doing this? What's Australia's best placement in the global value chain for AI foundation models? There are many more questions. As the founder of Workstem, I’ve always been passionate about reimagining the mission-critical process of properly paying people in Australia. Several years ago, we set out to address this challenge, and after extensive research, we concluded that to deliver a perfect payslip, three well-established processes must be harmonised: Onboarding, Workforce Management, and Payroll. Onboarding is the starting point. When a new employee joins a company, it’s crucial to set them up with a consistent Master File or People Record that remains intact throughout the entire workflow. Additionally, linking new employees to the relevant award from the outset is essential. Workforce Management encompasses various elements, including time capture, time management, rostering, leave management, employee self-service, and, most critically, proper award interpretation. Capturing time accurately and converting it into a gross wages file is the foundation for a flawless payslip. A modern Payroll System is the final piece of the puzzle. However, the challenge lies in ensuring compliance with ever-changing ATO mandates, such as STP-2 and superannuation requirements. Most sizeable employers in Australia have systems for onboarding, workforce management, and payroll. This raises an important question: If everyone has a system, why did Fair Work collect over $1 billion in payroll remediation for 635,000 underpaid workers in the past two financial years?
