About us
WasteMINZ exists to make a positive impact on Aotearoa New Zealand. We are the largest representative body of Aotearoa New Zealand's waste, resource recovery and contaminated land sectors. But it’s not all rubbish bins and recycling. Our eight sector groups provide best practice guidance, thought leadership and resources on some of Aotearoa’s pressing issues – such as the circular economy, right to repair, sustainable practices for businesses, lead contamination in residential properties, kerbside collections, a container return scheme and food waste.

New Zealand’s second emissions reduction plan sets out how the Government will meet our climate change target for the second half of this decade. The Government’s plan focuses on actions that will drive significant emissions reduction. The plan helps keep New Zealand’s emissions to no more than 305 megatonnes between 2026 and 2030, allowing New Zealand to meet our second emission budget and setting the foundation to meet our 2050 net zero target. Our new website is now live - thanks to the team at Concentrate - HubSpot Solutions Partner! Check it out here: www.wasteminz.org.nz
We're delighted to go live with another high quality membership website, this time for WasteMINZ the peak body for waste and resource recovery in NZ. Our team enjoyed working with wasteMINZ and the talented design team Meta Digital NZ. HubSpot's content hub was a great fit for a highly usable CMS with powerful security features to manage member access. It was a pleasure to work with the team at wasteMINZ and we are so proud of what we all collectively achieved, congratulations to all. Link in the comments if you'd like to check it out.

#NEW: Our final reports for 2024 have been released: our advice on on NZ's fourth emissions budget, and our review of the 2050 emissions target (including our advice on whether emissions from international shipping and aviation should be included). These two reports are separate, but closely related: 🎯 The 2050 target represents the country's long-term commitment to reducing its emissions, to contribute to global efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels – which evidence shows will help avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Our review of the target found significant changes since 2019: Evidence shows that the world is not on track to limit warming to 1.5°C, climate impacts are more severe and happening sooner than expected, and other countries are already doing and expecting more. We're recommending an update to a more ambitious 2050 target that's also affordable and achievable. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gzkypCix 📉 Emissions budgets help turn this long-term commitment into tangible, measurable and achievable steps. Our advice shows that Aotearoa New Zealand has options to get on track to the current 2050 emissions reduction target. We've recommended that the fourth emissions budget be set at 160 MtCO2e – and we've also recommended that emissions budgets one, two and three be updated. Rod Lidgard - CEnvP (SC), lead author of the Reclaiming Resources: Optimising Soil Reuse in Infrastructure and Development white paper, spoke to Jesse Mulligan about why we should make it easier to keep soil out of landfills on World Soil Day yesterday. Healthy soil nurtures life, preserves ecosystems, and helps our natural world flourish – but in Aotearoa New Zealand, we continue to treat it like waste. Soil from construction, developments, and earthworks is often sent to landfill, with more than 4.5 million tonnes of soil estimated to end up in landfills and cleanfills every year. Ahead of World Soil Day (Thursday, 5 December) WasteMINZ has published a media release about the Reclaiming Resources: Optimising Soil Reuse in Infrastructure and Development white paper, which you can read here: https://lnkd.in/gPPvPEKM It's not too late to register for our World Soil Day webinar, where Rod Lidgard - CEnvP (SC), James Corbett and Timothy Dee will explain the key messages from the paper and share next steps. What have WasteMINZ's steering committees been up to over the past three months? A lot! On top of a comprehensive schedule of webinars, the committees have sent multiple letters to Ministers, had three elections, and are working on a number of advocacy pieces, including CRS, feedback on the waste disposal levy, and urging the government to continue prioritising behaviour change campaigns and product stewardship schemes. Aotearoa New Zealand must set its second international climate change target for 2031–35, known as a Nationally Determined Contribution, by February 2025. Climate change impacts all New Zealanders, and the Government wants to understand what’s most important to New Zealanders before setting our next international climate change target. We also want feedback on how the Government could weight the different factors it must consider when settings its second Nationally Determined Contribution. Your feedback will help to inform final decisions by the Government. Learn more about the opportunity for feedback and share your views 🔗: https://lnkd.in/gZTiyQ7d
