How can the water industry save £100 million a year and render the fatberg extinct? Peter Henley, Principal Consultant at WRc Group, believes the solution lies in a more holistic approach to waste management. Discussion of a new international flushability standard has renewed the focus on flushable wipes. However, Peter argues that this product is merely the tip of the fatberg. EPA has released Publication 1828.3, which allows the duty holder or their appointed consultant to classify wastes containing PFAS. This is a much needed departure from the existing designation process, which was burdening for both the EPA and the duty holder, often resulting in protracted time periods to arrive on classification advice for PFAS impacted material. The inclusion of PFAS in 1828.3, particularly tables 2 and 3, allows a common sense approach to waste classification with the management of PFAS alongside other contamination. A great step in the right direction that will enable streamlined PFAS impacted waste management in a risk based manner.
