The NZWEA Board and CEO Kevin Hart, are delighted to announce that Bobby Ball, Renewable Energy Sector Manager, at Vertical Horizonz New Zealand, has been appointed Chair of the NZWEA Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Working Group, for a 2-year term. The NZWEA HSE Working Group’s purpose is to collaborate and share learnings amongst its members on HSE and wellbeing experiences in the wind energy sector. Given the risks associated with wind farm development & operations, it is encouraging that HSE practices for managing windfarms are now well developed globally. NZWEA recognises that open sharing of information improves the safety outcomes for all parties. It is only through a philosophy of ongoing learning and collaboration that all workers get to go home safely, every day. We wish to extend a huge congratulations to Bobby Ball, and NZWEA members look forward to working with him over the next two years. If you are interested in joining NZWEA, please email [email protected]

  • A factor influencing workplace safety you might be missing. When we talk about workplace safety, we often focus on physical risks, but there’s another layer that plays a crucial role that is often overlooked—psychological safety. This is the assurance employees feel when they know they can report issues, voice concerns, share wellbeing issues, or discuss ideas for improvement without fear of backlash. Psychological safety creates an environment where open communication thrives, making it easier to identify and address risks before they escalate. Without it, stress, burnout, and silent dangers can impact focus and decision-making abilities, increasing the chances of accidents. Building this foundation isn’t just about improving morale—it’s about fostering a culture where supporting mental well-being supports physical safety. Find out more about the link between psychological safety and overall workplace safety in our latest article:

  • As 2024 wraps up, it's a great time to look back on what we’ve achieved in VHNZ’s Youth & Careers division. This year has been key in shaping how we help rangatahi develop the skills they need to succeed in the workplace. We’ve hit some big milestones and have exciting plans ahead, all while staying true to our objective of creating industry-aligned pathways for young people across Aotearoa. This year, we kicked things off with the launch of our Youth and Careers Catalogue, purposed to providing rangatahi with clear, work-ready pathways. The catalogue, aligned with industry needs, covers key areas such as: - Workplace Health & Safety - Building Construction and Trades - Rural Agriculture Academy - E-Learning Digital Modules These pathways are designed to equip students with the skills and safety knowledge they need to succeed in these industries. We also rolled out a nationwide CATE cluster hosting action plan, where we connected with educators across regions like Waikato, Nelson, Rotorua, Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay, and Auckland. These events were held at our purpose-built facilities and gave us a chance to show the value of vocational training to careers advisors, teachers and key members in the education industry. We are proud to share that in 2024, we engaged with over 100 secondary schools, including Kura Kaupapa Māori and Te Kura Pounamu, and shared our vision for developing skilled, safety-conscious workers ready to take on industry challenges. Because of the efforts of our amazing team, we experienced a 30% increase in secondary schools partnering with VHNZ this year. Our training courses such as Chainsaw Operations, Working at Heights, Low-Level Scaffold, Health & Safety, and Forklift Operator Certificates provided students with hands-on, practical skills and experience that will help to support rangatahi as they move into the workforce. As we move on to 2025, we’re excited to keep pushing forward with top-quality, industry-aligned REAL TRAINING THAT SAVES AND CHANGES LIVES for rangatahi. We remain committed to addressing the evolving needs of industries and the workforce, focusing on equipping the next generation with the skills and knowledge needed for the industries of the future. • Super proud of Head of Programmes and Apprenticeships, Jodhi, and her work with Te Rōpū Marutau o Aotearoa and ACC on the Haumaru Tāngata Framework. This important mahi is helping to create safer, supportive workplaces.

Small steps, meaningful change. Connecting workplace health and safety with te Ao Māori. The Haumaru Tāngata Framework helps guide organisations to create safe, supportive work environments by embedding Mātauranga Māori practices alongside contemporary health and safety strategies. Recently I had the privilege of attending a hui with Moira Loach from Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi and Jodhi Warwick-Ponga from Vertical Horizonz New Zealand, (both are trustees for Te Rōpū Marutau o Aotearoa) who are the drivers and heart of this three-year long framework which has been developed in collaboration with ACC. They showcased their findings and insights on the implementation of the Haumaru Tāngata Framework, and the small – yet impactful – ways that kaupapa, mātauranga, and tikanga Māori, can be integrated into mainstream business practices to improve safety outcomes for Māori and all staff. I agree with Jodhi and Moira – learning te reo Māori is about more than just learning a language. At ACC we love working with others who share our passion for making New Zealand workplaces safer and Jodhi and Moira have an unwavering and infectious commitment to doing so.
