This was a wonderful project to be involved in. Real innovation from Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Whai Rawa in the funding model, enabling their hapū members access to more affordable quality housing on their whenua. It was worth the early start to attend the opening last Friday to see the happy new residents access their beautiful new homes. Last week marked the official opening of Hawaiki, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei’s newest papa kāinga development in Ōrākei. The development includes 24 one, two and four-bedroom homes, representing a significant milestone in Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei’s ongoing commitment to providing affordable housing solutions for whānau. Through long-term lease agreements, Hawaiki makes homeownership more accessible and will allow whānau to maintain the ahi kā of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei (the long history and connection of the hapū to their whenua), while residing in warm, healthy homes which respect tikanga. Congratulations Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Whai Rawa on this incredible achievement!

Join Urban Development Institute of New Zealand UDINZ for a discussion that will explore the sustainable design principles that underpin AUT’s newly refurbished Tukutuku building, marking the first step in the revitalisation of the University’s North Campus. Hosted by representatives from Auckland University of Technology, Jasmax and Naylor Love, this event will cover the use of mass timber and adaptive reuse within Tukutuku, leading it to become the University’s lowest carbon and most energy efficient development. The new four-story learning facility provides a much-needed social and academic heart, with a soaring atrium connecting to the existing AF building, which has been comprehensively refurbished as part of the development. With connectivity, sustainability, and wellbeing at the heart of design, Tukutuku sets a benchmark for a sustainable future. AUT is currently Aotearoa New Zealand’s most energy efficient university. Tukutuku is its most sustainable building, strengthening AUT’s position as the university with the lowest CO2 emissions/m2 of built space in Australasia. Mass timber combined with the adaptive reuse strategy have been key to halving embodied carbon emissions when compared to an equivalent new development. Tukutuku is designed to uplift student achievement by providing a connected hub encompassing essential student services with study and social spaces immediately adjacent to a wide range of learning spaces, a café, library and academic staff. Incredible to see Te Waihorotiu Station on Victoria and Wellesley Streets in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s midtown coming to life and so closely resembling the original renders. The station foyer’s feature ceiling is inspired by harakeke (reeds), with rods designed to mimic their stems and the movement of water. Patients can enjoy and experience the greenery, even if they are unable to walk through it. Calming pockets of nature surround people in the garden, with a space reserved for medical staff. “When I design workplaces for clients, I try to bring some of the magic of hospitality, reflecting how organisations want people to feel when they enter their space.” In a recent interview with Architecture New Zealand, Alan McCorkindale, a senior interior designer in our Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington studio, shared his approach to designing human-centred workplaces. Alan’s latest project involved designing Buddle Findlay’s new Ōtautahi Christchurch office, which overlooks Cathedral Square. Building reuse is critical for reducing embodied carbon in the construction sector. It was a privilege to host Bex Waugh from BrainBadge at Jasmax last week to gain insight into neurodiversity and neurodivergence and understand how we can better support our people. It is estimated that 20% of the population are neurodivergent – it impacts some of us directly and certainly all of us will be interacting with neurodivergent people who may be in our teams, our clients, our friends and family.
