  • Like last year, we are ending the year with yet another AI-generated poem. Merry Christmas from Erik Bjørstad, Trym Nagelstad, Anniken Hofgaard and me, Kathrine Lærke Søndergaard 🎅 🎄As 2024 closes, (almost) with snow in the air, We reflect on a year of ventures to share. With impact and purpose, our mission stood tall, Here’s a rhyme to summarize it all! 📈To Collaborative Fund and Voyager Ventures, we turned, Backing their visions, where innovation burns. Momentum and Startuplab, our partners of old, Received more support as their stories unfold. 🏢Propely joined us, a newcomer with zeal, Making real estate smarter – a transformational deal. Follow-up investments? We made four more, Helping our portfolio grow and explore. 👩💼Trym came aboard, our team is now a quartet, Boosting our bandwidth, our strongest asset. From New York to Berlin, at Slush, The Drop and beyond, We traveled far, strengthening bonds. 🥐A breakfast for family offices, Norwegian and bright, Sharing our approach to tech in the climate fight. A year of connections, investing with care, Fueling innovations to clear the air. 🌍But amidst all the progress, the challenges grew, Boiling planet remind us there’s much still to do. As carolers sing and the holidays near, We double down on impact for a greener frontier. 🎇Here’s to 2025, where we’ll stay on this quest, Backing funds and founders, giving our best. • 🌍 We’re thrilled to announce that Pale blue dot, one of the climate-tech funds we are proudly backing, has just made its first Norwegian investment in Atlas! 🇳🇴✨ Atlas is pioneering a new way to work with geospatial data, offering an intuitive, browser-based mapping tool accessible to everyone—not just GIS experts. Inspired by tools like Figma, Atlas is disrupting legacy GIS software by making mapping affordable, cloud-based, and collaboration-friendly. The platform is already empowering industries from renewable energy to urban planning to make smarter, more climate-conscious decisions. The Oslo-based team, led by CEO Fredrik Moger, brings a unique blend of technical skill, innovative vision, and a passion for impact. Originally students, they bootstrapped Atlas through the early stages, even pausing other career paths to focus fully on their vision. With close to 20,000 signups across 140 countries already, they’re proving that dedication and purpose can lead to big results. 🌎💼 With Atlas, geospatial data isn’t just a tool—it’s a driver for positive action in the climate space. We’re so excited to be (indirectly) part of this journey! Fredrik Moger Harald Tryti Rieber Marius Hofgaard Vegard J. • 📢Yesterday, our own Anniken Hofgaard, co-hosted the 5th edition of Venture Night at McKinsey together with Daniel Caetanya Fossum and Kjartan Landgraff Kalstad. Since they came up with the idea two years ago, it has grown into a community of over 300+ founders, operators, investors, and young professionals. We are super-proud of how Anniken is contributing to the venture scene in Oslo💪

«Supposedly out of 80 investors only 3, including Northzone, were willing to put in a ticket in that early round of Spotify. Then on the day of closing, the last investor pulls out, which meant the whole round was in jeopardy. We decided to double down and cover the one that pulled out. We made a lot of money on that one decision.» Listening to Karl-Christian Agerup and Anne H Worsøe talk about what has happened over the last 25 years in the venture scene is a true joy if you are passionate about the venture and early stage growth. Last night, together with Anniken Hofgaard & Kjartan Landgraff Kalstad, we co-hosted the 5th edition of Venture Night @ McKinsey. An idea two years ago has now become a vibrant community of over 300+ founders, operators, investors, and young professionals. The topic of the night was «The Power of Luck and Risk» and we got to hear anecdotes and learnings from both the investor and founder side. Andy Chen, Sigrun Syverud, and Edwin Fjeldtvedt started the evening by sharing their learnings and experiences from turbulent years of hyper-growth and abrupt shifts in market dynamics. They also shared openly about the personal risks and extra pressure of managing investments from family and friends when things get tough. We then got to enjoy a road down memory lane with KC and Anne talking about venture and how it has changed over the years with the different economic cycles. The only winners in venture are the ones who are long - which basically goes for all types of investments. Investing in VC funds are impossible to time. For example, Spotify was invested out of Northzone’s Fund V. Many LPs chose not to invest after fund III & IV and missed out on their best ever investment. Thanks to the team at McKinsey & Company for excellent support and great hospitality - Shout-out to Silje Haavet Golden, Olga Mozhayskaya, Finn Szczesny, and Cecilia Synnevåg Nybø. All the photos are shot by: Carl Christian Raabe Fun fact: Did you know that there currently are 80 Mckinsey alumni founded unicorns in the world. A result of luck or taking the necessary risk - who knows?

✨Leder for en dag I går fikk Maja Johanne Wirgenes fra Stabekk videregående skole, skygge vår CIO Tom Erik Myrland under Ungt Entreprenørskap Norge sitt arrangement «Leder for en dag». Takk for besøket, Maja. Vi håper du hadde en spennende og lærerik dag som leder for en dag! Johan H. Andresen Morten Borge Ungt Entreprenørskap Akershus #uenorge #Lederforendag Foto: Fotograf Sveinung Braathen

  • 🌊 We’re proud investors in SWEN Blue Ocean and thrilled to see their groundbreaking impact governance model recognized as a Harvard Business School case study! Congratulations to the Christian Lim, Olivier Raybaud 海力维 and the rest of the team on this achievement, which is a testament to their innovative approach to aligning finance, science, and nature in ocean regeneration. This case underscores SWEN Capital Partners commitment to "putting finance at the service of nature", and we’re excited to supporting their mission.🌍 Erik Bjørstad Anniken Hofgaard Trym Nagelstad Kathrine Lærke Søndergaard

Managing Director | SWEN Blue Ocean

Yesterday, at Harvard Business School, I had the honour to represent our team at a class teaching a Business Case about SWEN Blue Ocean. Thank you Professor Vikram Gandhi and David Allen for writing this case, shedding light on our impact and return strategy for ocean regeneration, and to the students for the stimulating discussions!   When Olivier and I launched SWEN Blue Ocean in 2021, we believed it necessary to redesign investment governance from the ground up to fully align science, nature and finance. We dreamed of a new investment governance model that could help incorporate nature in investment decisions globally and mainstream impact investment. With this in mind, we drafted SWEN Blue Ocean’s investment governance, with two core elements: 1.     An independent Impact Committee validates the impact thesis for every investment proposed, before it can be submitted to the Investment Committee. Impact Committee members are science and conservation experts. 2.     50% of the invest team’s carried interest (performance bonus) is subject to achieving impact KPIs, validated by an Impact Governance Committee composed of investors in the fund and experts. Impact is assessed qualitatively AND quantitatively, as both dimensions are critical to capture the complexity of impact on biodiversity.   This Harvard Business Case is a momentous milestone in our journey, as it recognizes the pioneering nature of our investment governance and interrogates its potential to impact the financial sector at large. In addition, it illustrates how SWEN Capital Partners' mission to “Put finance at the service of Nature” translates into tangible action. Furthermore, it showcases the Ocean Impact Navigator - a shared impact measurement methodology developed by 1000 Ocean Startups - which is integral to our impact methodology.   In addition, the Business Case examines how we implemented SWEN Blue Ocean’s investment governance to make our decision to invest in WSENSE in 2023. WSense created a groundbreaking underwater telecommunication technology akin to the ‘wifi of the ocean’. It is an incredibly powerful technology, which helps democratize ocean data to build a more efficient, transparent and accountable ocean economy. It can accelerate all ocean activities, positive or negative. As a result, achieving net positive impact necessitates a leadership with the highest ethical standards and intellectual rigour. We found this in Chiara – Founder and CEO - and her team and this was critical to decide to invest.   What’s next? -       The case will soon be available for purchase at Harvard Business Publishing Education. If you teach sustainable finance, do consider this case 😊. -       If you are working to promote investment governance that integrates science and nature, do reach out! I would love to see how we can join forces.   Thanks to the SWEN Blue Ocean team and to SWEN’s Sustainable Finance team for turning these ideas into reality every day.   Thanks for your support!

  • We’ve been a bit quiet, but for good reason – we've been busy investing!💼Yesterday, we did something new: inviting Norwegian family offices to our HQ to discuss early-stage climate investing 🌍 At Ferd AS, we believe in the power of sharing – the wins and the challenges. Especially in the climate space, sharing knowledge is key to inspiring more people to get involved. Johan H. Andresen kicked things off with the story behind Ferd Impact Investing. Anniken Hofgaard highlighted why it makes sense to invest in climate at an early-stage. Did you know that 35% of the CO2 reductions needed by 2050 will come from technologies not yet commercialized? 💡 Kathrine Lærke Søndergaard talked about how our fund portfolio is contributing to scaling 130 different climate technologies – more on this in our Impact Report coming next week!📖 Erik Bjørstad shared how we construct our portfolio, and Trym Nagelstad walked us through our process for selecting the best fund managers 💯 This was hopefully the first of several events creating a space for Norwegian family offices to exchange ideas and lessons learned on climate investments. Thanks to everyone who joined us for a great start to the day! 🙌
