🌟 Technology Transfer Office (TTO) – Erasmus MC at NeuroHack 2024 Łukasiewicz - PORT 🌟 Our colleague Thom Joosten joined #NeuroHack 2024 at #Lukasiewicz Port, an international event which brought together researchers, innovators and industry experts to help young investigators to practice “safe” commercialization. Curious to learn more about Thom’s unique experience, learning sessions and networking during this event? Read full version below 👇
From November 18th to 20th, Łukasiewicz – PORT in Wrocław became a hub of creativity and collaboration during NeuroHack 2024, a key event organized within the framework of the #SAMENeuroID project. The event brought together researchers, innovators, and industry experts to help young investigators to practice commercialisation 'safely - without the risk of bankruptcy'. Participants collaborated on innovative projects during group workshops, culminating in dynamic pitch presentations on the final day. The winning team led by Maurits Unkel from Erasmus MC, with the project Neurava, was recognized for creativity and potential for impact. Neurava fosters a deeper connection with oneself and others, enabling the experience of life's full potential through nourishment and holistic healing via recreation. It introduces an AI deep-learning-assisted, neuromorphic, brain-powered device—a mind companion inspired by the concept of an avatar—designed for personal growth and well-being through innovative recreation. The agenda of the NeuroHack was packed with expert-led sessions, including: - Judith Schweimer (Boehringer Ingelheim), who emphasized the value of collaboration in advancing preclinical science. - Anna Rajewska (Fundacja ORCHidea), offering a patient-focused perspective on technological innovations in neurology and neuropsychology. - Karolina Fila-Pawłowska (Politechnika Wrocławska), discussing how AI is transforming healthcare, - Steve Foster (CSU STRATA), inspiring participants with his talk, “How to Train Your Dragon, or Innovators.” - Ali Jawaid (Łukasiewicz – PORT), closing the event with “A Trend to Brainality: A Physician-Scientist’s Quest for Truth and Romance with Innovation.” Attendees gained insights from startups such as CancerCenter.ai Piotr K and The Cognity Katsiaryna Stankevich, showcasing AI's role in cancer diagnostics and psychology. Sue...Sue Tonks Tonks, an international expert on leadership and networking, delivered a workshop that equipped participants with tools to create immediate audience impact. “We had concerns about how such a new-for-us formula for NeuroHack would work in practice, but more than a year of work to properly select committed group leaders and build trust between them and group members, as well as a precise selection of experts, resulted in an inspiring event.” said Witold Konopka, SAME-NeuroID Project Coordinator. Thank you and congratulations to all the participants! A special thank you goes to everyone who made this workshop possible – our outstanding experts, SAME-NeuroID project partners Institut du Cerveau – Paris Brain Institute, Erasmus MC and Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry and TTO Officers - Thom Joosten, Sebastian Meyer-Borchert, and Marie Micolon - who contributed significantly to the incubation process. #neurohackPORT #SAMENeuroID #LukasiewiczPORT

📢 Technology Transfer Office (TTO) – Erasmus MC is excited about the announcement that Kaminari Medical has successfully closed a €3.8 million financing round! 🩺 Kaminari Medical is an inspiring spin-off from Erasmus MC developing intravascular imaging technology for Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) to provide real-time qualification of plaque composition, particularly lipid-rich plaques that pose the greatest risk of potentially life-threatening rupture. The development of the patented intravascular imaging technology, leveraging the power of photoacoustics and ultrasound, resulted from research driven by Ton Van Der Steen and Gijs van Soest 🟥. 💶 The round consists of investments (€ 2.3 M) from Graduate Entrepreneur Fund, NLC Health Ventures, Libertatis Ergo Holding B.V. (Universiteit Leiden) and Demcon investment. The round was completed by an Innovation Credit of € 1.5 M from the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO). 🚀 What does this mean for Kaminari Medical? This strategic investment will allow Kaminari Medical to accelerate the development of its breakthrough photoacoustics and ultrasound imaging platform, initiate clinical trials, and work up to market introduction. 🌱 A leap forward in valorizing this innovative research! We would like to congratulate Jeroen Kodde, CEO of Kaminari Medical and the rest of the Kaminari team for this outstanding achievement. 📌 Kaminari Medical is located at the Ba-Building location of Erasmus MC Incubator at the Erasmus MC Campus! Kaminari Medical, an innovator in intravascular imaging technology, has successfully closed a € 3.8M funding round to accelerate product development, expand clinical evidence and fuel market entry. The round consists of investments (€ 2.3 M) from Graduate Entrepreneur Fund, NLC Health Ventures, Libertatis Ergo Holding B.V. (Leiden University) and Demcon Investment. The round was completed by an Innovation Credit of € 1.5 M from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). This strategic investment will allow Kaminari Medical to accelerate the development of its breakthrough photoacoustics and ultrasound imaging platform, initiate clinical trials, and work up to market introduction. Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), the leading cause of death worldwide is largely driven by lipid-rich plaques that narrow the coronary arteries and can lead to life-threatening events such as heart attacks and acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Currently available diagnostics tools lack the ability to precisely identify high-risk plaques prone to rupture, leaving interventional cardiologists with limited information when deciding the optimal treatment strategy. Kaminari Medical’s patented intravascular imaging technology leverages the power of photoacoustics and ultrasound to provide real-time qualification of plaque composition, particularly lipid-rich plaques that pose the greatest risk of rupture. By delivering a more accurate assessment of coronary arteries, Kaminari Medical’s solution enables physicians to better assess the risk of major cardiovascular events, guide optimal treatment strategy and save lives. "We are thrilled to be supported by such esteemed investors who share our vision of transforming cardiovascular diagnostics and therapy guidance," said Jeroen Kodde, CEO of Kaminari Medical. "This funding allows us to expedite the development of our technology, bring it to healthcare providers, and ultimately improve outcomes for millions of patients affected by cardiovascular disease." “With this investment we can bring our scientific endeavours to the patient’s bedside: Knowledge valorisation at its finest”, said Professor Ton Van Der Steen, co-founder of Kaminari Medical and head of the department of Biomedical Engineering of Erasmus MC. “We believe Kaminari Medical is uniquely positioned to disrupt the intravascular imaging space with its innovative approach to cardiovascular diagnostics,” said Graduate Entrepreneur representative Filip Cuypers. “Their novel solution will give physicians the tools they need to make procedures safer, more effective, and ultimately save lives. We are excited to support the company in this next stage of growth.” Many thanks to all new and existing investors: NWO (Dutch Research Council), UNIIQ - Finance for the Future, Erasmus MC, NLC Health Ventures, Demcon Investment, Libertatis Ergo Holding B.V., Graduate Entrepreneur Fund and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency .
