What, if we could collaborate with our own AI alter ego? 🤯 The Dutch techno DJ Reinier Zonneveld did exactly this. He played a DJ set together with his own “AI clone” (called R²). The R² AI model has been trained with audio and video data of the DJs productions and live performances. Based on this training, the AI clone can generate new music on the fly, resembling in the musical style of the artist. 🤖 In a dedicated festival, Reinier played a collaborative (back to back) dj set with his AI clone. The world’s first DJ performance of a human DJ and an AI DJ/musician. 🔊 Sounds fascinating, right? Indeed, and what’s fascinating here, is not just limited to music: At first, it shows a completely new way of how to use AI within a creative process. Having an AI based model of one-self, as a musician, is like having an own personalized instrument. It can generate new sounds and inspire new ideas, while keeping the typical musical style of the artist. It could eventually also enable others to collaborate with the AI alter ego. Similar to the concept of cloning and officially licensing the voices of singers or actors for creative and commercial purposes. Imagine such an example this for other domains, beyond music: like product development, design or education - where AI alter egos could become our collaborators, spark new ideas or provide our expertise to others. It will allow completely new kinds of collaborations and workflows.  🤝 2nd fascinating aspect: The R² AI alter ego became part of a live DJ performance. This marks new level of collaboration between a human and an AI system. Playing a DJ set is a complex interaction, especially when 2 DJs play together: It involves factors like real-time collaboration, ad-hoc behavior (the AI must adapt to the human actions and the other way around), lightning effects (also real-time), and, not least, the interaction with the audience - which influences the artist and his/her performance. This allows further new forms of live entertainment or more generally live collaborations (ever wanted to show your guitar skills as a new member of the Rolling Stones?). 🎸   Beyond music, such forms of real-time collaboration will become potentially very useful, as they enable situational interactions between humans an AI based system: Imagine workshops or medical contexts (involving AI-based domain experts), or sports (ever wanted to do a training session with your favorite football or tennis player?). 🎾 And, of course, being a #DJ myself, it would be great playing back to back DJ sets with (AI-)Reinier and some more of my favorite DJs ... 🎉   PS. User Generated Realities 🌐 I've talked about it recently, but the convergence of AI and AR will unlock the possibility to dynamically change our environments. It raises many questions: What about the shared reality we want to experience with others? Which interface for this new spatial world? What regulation and who will control the layer of information we will all live together? But it's also an excited way to imagine the future of entertainment, commerce, content, gaming, and much more. Exciting times to imagine what's coming next.

🎮 Diving Back Into What Makes Games Fun Ever stopped to think about what makes a game actually "fun"? I recently revisited Raph Koster's ideas, 20 years after his book "A Theory of Fun" first got game designers, including myself, rethinking our approach. Koster made us look back and also forward — asking, how does fun evolve with our players and their changing brains? And beyond that, he reminded us of something crucial: the importance of enjoying the process of making games themselves. It hit home for me. In the rush of deadlines and deliverables, it's easy to forget the playful spirit that got us into game design in the first place. Koster’s words were a call to action — to remember why we started and to hold on to the fun and curiosity of creating something new. So, here's to making our game design journey as enjoyable as the games we hope to create. Have you thought about what "fun" means in your work lately? CREATIVES, pay attention to this one. ALL MEDIA is about to change! In the video below, both images started as still pictures... What's more, BOTH images are also AI (trained in my likeness)! Even the real looking one on the left. I then animated these images using LivePortrait. Movies, animation, and marketing assets are about to change! Notice how my facial movements and lips sync to the audio. No matter how distorted my mannerisms are! However, to be fair, LivePortrait code did have a harder time with real-life or realistic AI photos. If a head in the input video moves too much, it can't quite make sense of those movements and render the video correctly. It took me some time to find balance animating realistic pictures. But, cartoon-like images work just fine in my experience. Perhaps it's the uncanny valley effect. I ran the program directly through cmd in a virtual environment. Haven't yet tried the ComfyUI plug-in. Things are about to get wild with anything involving videos! Thanks to Kristie, Brandon and Aamir for bringing this to my attention. I couldn't put it off anymore so I gave it a go 😀 Github link to the project is in the comments.
