These parts allow our body's own inhibition of pain, thanks to endorphins. ❇ Studies have shown that our thoughts have the power to change how we experience pain. - Why is it so difficult then to let old people have pets in their rest homes? - Why is it so difficult to let things like this more often happen in hospitals? I just don't get it... This week Louise van Haarst and I hosted a roundtable for CTO Craft Conversations diving deep into this topic: Psychological Safety in Tech Teams The success of round table events depends entirely on the curiosity and contributions from participants and this group delivered. Here is a snapshot of where their curiosity and experiences took them... 💡 As a leader, how do I know if I've created a psychologically safe environment for the team? ↳ Ask them what they think...and listen to what they have to say ↳ Watch what they do (or don't do). Are they engaged in their work? Is turnover high? Are they bringing you ideas? Do they tell you about what's not going well? Do they challenge you and give you feedback? 💡 What do I do when one person's "uncomfortable but safe" is another person's "unsafe"? ↳ Context is key. Comfort and safety vary widely from individual to individual. ↳ Understand individual preferences and needs (ask them...) ↳ Acknowledge and accept differences in needs and support levels ↳ Align on team ground rules that takes individual needs into account where possible whilst keeping the team performance and goals front of mind. 💡 How do I know if the reasons someone feels unsafe are due to the environment or are personal to them? ↳ Individual psychological safety is influenced by organisational dynamics and our personal histories. ↳ If many people are reporting feeling unsafe you are more likely to have an environmental issue than an isolated or individual experience one. ↳ In the end it does it really matter? If you want to get the best out of someone finding out what if any tweaks you can make in the team to help them feel at their best is a conversation worth having, even if the root issues are complex. 💡Who is responsible for creating and maintaining psychological safety? ↳ Leadership sets the tone and has an outsized influence through role modelling the behaviours they want to foster ↳ But every team member can influence how psychologically safe their colleagues feel, and have a responsibility to uphold it day to day. One thing we concluded on the train home was how encouraged we were by the level of interest and commitment this group of senior teach execs have in fostering spaces where everyone feels safe to contribute, learn, and grow 🌱 Hurrah 🙌 🌟 What challenges are you navigating when it comes to psychological safety?  🙏 to Andy Skipper for the invite and to Hannah Van Nostrand for the organisation and hospitality. Entrepreneurs has the power to change the world 🌎. 🧐 In a world that often hastens to judge, the act of trust, acceptance and Inclusion are rare and precious gifts. 💛We need to ecknowlede and take responsibility for our own actions, present and future.💛 Restenly I have been confronted with my own biases. The shame... Overwhelming, but humbling and an enlightening experience. It is an awakening that spurs me to become better, do better, be better. ❤As innovators we can pave the way for others, and for perspectives, that needs to get attention to create a more inclusive environment, to foster growth and further innovations. It is about seeing beyond the surface, understanding that diversity in thought and experience is not just beneficial but essential for your business to grow. Trust is the bridge that connects and unite us, allowing us to cross into each other's worlds and learn from one another. It is a testament to our belief in the goodness of others, and it is a currency that grows only when it is spent. 💯Via my own experience I know that it is emencly important to create a safe space for failure, especially in the start up world. In this space we can allow ourselves and others to learn, to grow, and to emerge stronger and in this space we will grow faster then ever before. To understand that mistakes are not a reflection of character but a part of the human condition is equally important. And for that insight I am forever grateful 🙏🏼. And the insight will be equally important for your business as it grows with your teams trust and engagement. Based on the values you share in your actions. A diverse perspective is like an insurance, it will help you when you need it the most. 😇I am humbled by the lessons I have learned via my network, and grateful for the opportunity to continue learning. How cool is this! Mid november, 200 members of ANVR (Dutch Association of Travel Organisations) will be flying to Oman for their annual conference.
