I am still collecting my thoughts on the advisability of deploying a set of technologies on a new infrastructure to replace another set of technologies on an old infrastructure that is already being rapidly replaced by a move to another existing infrastructure that is ubiquitous because of a change in consumer behaviour. Complicated? But I can only believe consumers are the key. They are already changing to a largely on demand consumption model that removes the profitability and reduces the ROI of any specialist infrastructure for dealing with linear video delivery like 5G. Watching very closely...

Another reason #euro2024 should be a fun watch – 5G will be involved! Broadcaster RTL Deutschland and Deutsche Telekom are working together to use 5G services via a private 5G network to deliver “data-intensive applications” with the network running in the 3.7GHz to 3.8GHz range and offering up to 100MHz of bandwidth to the broadcaster. FTTX ODN Solution Introduction PON access system should be an all-optical solution in response to the continuously growing bandwidth requirements in the last-mile (access) domain. PON-based access network follows the trend of delivery of triple-play services to end subscribers, aggregating three types of services over a single delivery platform. This in turns is the next step in the evolution of the core networks to IP-based NGN. In order to build the new generation of optical access networks, this solution draws on the technologies of different maturity extents such as EPON, GPON, Ethernet and xDSL, ranging from local exchange devices of various capacities to serialized user-side devices. It can be deployed in various application scenarios, such as FTTC, FTTB, FTTO and FTTH, enabling operators to deliver services in a simple and straightforward manner, providing cost-effective  high-bandwidth and multi-service support capabilities. The Positives and Negatives of the Open RAN Ecosystem - ver 25 On the positive side  since my last update in August we have seen continued growth and stability in the ecosystem. We have  over 140 companies ( direct component suppliers) in 21 countries actively participating. I continue to break out the verticals segments that are now consolidating. Today there are three segments comprising:- End to End Macro, Fixed wireless Access, Inbuilding coverage ( DAS) and Enterprise End to End.  We are seeing NTN, Sensing and AI/ML segments in development and I will cover those at a later date. On a positive note we have another 6  test labs being added with the notable addition of the Open RAN Center for Integration and Deployment (ORCID), @ACCoRD and Viavisolutions Valor Labs funded from the Wireless Innovation Fund NOFO1. With these 6 labs to the ecosystem has a total of 29 public labs. This does not take into account the multiple vender labs. With all these labs and no formal complience definition of an O-RAN product has the ecosystem lost direction by continuing to allow certain vendors to continue to  confuse the industry with teir definition of an Open RAN product and the confused purpose of the OTIC laboratory  for certification.   Multiple badging schemes from TIP and the O-RAN alliance are just adding to thsi confusion. First, we need definition by the O-RAN alliance of what an Open RAN product is defind by the mimimum interoperable interfaces. Although the O-RAN alliance has a block diagram and interface architecture you only have to have one interface to claim your product is O-RAN compliant. We have seen ATIS take a lead defining an Open RAN Minimum Viable Profile (MVP) establishing a minimum set of technical requirements, common across all North American operators, to foster the development and integration of Open RAN (Radio Access Network) technologies within their networks. Without such an MVP description and recognized certification the industry  will continue to be vendor locked. Secondly these badging schemes continue to add to the confusion - having one of these badges does not mean a product works correctly, is interoperable and is ready to be deployed.  The industry needs “one” certification label for each element that means the same thing to everyone globally and if that same product were re-tested in any of accredited laboratories globally the same results would be obtained. If I have missed any companies in the ecosystem, please reach out. I will certainly be interested to hear your views on minimum interface requirements, lab testing  and product certification.

Intelsat's #Galaxy19 is without a doubt best positioned for #tv #broadcast #satellite distribution in North America. With 95 channels and millions of households watching, the providers' list is much smaller compared to the European broadcasters, while the potential reach is substantially larger. Globecast is leading this satellite with 37 channels at 84.1Mbps, broadcasting a third of the bandwidth of the current channels available on the satellite. MUSLIM TELEVISION AHMADIYYA LIMITED, takes 2nd place with 9 channels at 37.8 Mbps, broadcasting 14.37% of current bandwidth. Third place goes to STN with 12 channels at 27.3 Mbps broadcasting 10.38% of current bandwidth. Given the potential of the North American #market, it is #interesting to see how the European continent has much more to offer when it comes to satellite broadcasting; Both in terms of channel offerings and Viewer Interaction. #FTA #Analytics

Really interesting article from Ericsson here about the #fan experience and fan loyalty to telecoms operators. Some of the stats about how likely a customer is to churn (ie switch to a different network), how repeat attendees to the same location value connectivity (and 5G in particular) as well as what fans/customers tend to use networks in large venues for is all very useful. However, this report to me doesn’t address the key point – its still focused on the MNOs and their relationships with the customers or fans, without taking account of the fact that the experiences are more and more driven or creating value for the venue owners or clubs, not the MNOs. In general, you want to run as much HD power as you legally can, including the use of asymmetrical sidebabds. Even a few dB can make a big difference in HD coverage and reliability.
