This amount of kelp has already disappeared from several of the Channel Islands, been gone for years yet the management of the Channels Islands National park was recently called a “success story” by Planet California PBS documentary. It is not fair to the Giant kelp forest to be left out of the collapsed marine ecosystem conversation. Blaming Purple urchins for collapse is not acceptable because it allows the problem to continue and get worse by avoiding ocean water quality and human impact upon it. My approach to restructure the entire Red urchin fishery starting with what I harvest will direct the resource to be kelp restoration and kelp education focused, will allow the Red Sea urchin to give back to it’s habitat and have a future. The dead end current market is not acceptable either. There is a better way, I know what it is, how to explain and teach it. Thru learning about the kelp. Enabling Red urchins, other spawning animals of the kelp forest and Giant kelp to be the teachers.

🚨 Amphibians 🐸 remain the most threatened group of animals on Earth, with over 40% of all known species classified as at risk of extinction by the IUCN Red List. 🟢 Last year, @rewild and their partners led a global study that found that climate change is an emerging threat to amphibians worldwide, although habitat destruction and an introduced fungal disease continue to be the biggest issues putting them at risk. The recently released Amphibian Conservation Action Plan, authored by over 100 experts, aims to help safeguard amphibians by identifying the most important areas to implement amphibian conservation activities based on more than 15 years of data. Re:wild is scaling up amphibian conservation. We've built a model for high-impact conservation that will help drive action on the ground through our local partners. “Since 1970, some studies estimate wildlife populations have declined on average by 73%, with huge numbers lost in the decades and centuries before.” Why are we not as focused on this as we seem to be on mill closures? Isn’t this the deeper crisis? This has always been the inconvenient conversation in forestry and yet we must have it. If a profitable, world-class industry comes at the cost of the balance of the other ecosystem services, then it has failed the sustainability test. I keep thinking back to Al Gore’s ‘The inconvenient truth’ and wonder how many other inconvenient truths exist in our relationship to nature. We have to do better if we are going to leave something for future generations or have the kind of healthy industry so many opine about. And for those wondering, I am intentionally being more vocal at this stage of my career because I want people to know that many foresters care deeply about ecosystem health and not just the economics of the sector - which is of course vital too. We need to speak out more to balance the public dialogue.

This positive trend can be attributed to various factors, one of the most significant being the proactive involvement of the fishing industry in implementing conservation measures. 🐢 The widespread adoption of turtle excluder devices (TEDs) on trawl nets has played a crucial role in reducing accidental bycatch of sea turtles during fishing operations. By allowing turtles to escape when caught in fishing nets, TEDs have helped minimize the impact of fishing activities on sea turtle populations, contributing to their overall recovery and conservation. 🤝 The fishing industry's commitment to conservation through the use of TEDs is a clear example of how collaboration between different stakeholders can lead to positive outcomes for endangered species like sea turtles. A 3D View of Ocean Protection While conservation efforts focus on breadth of coverage, depth remains an overlooked dimension. A study in Nature Communications by Jacquemont, Loiseau, Tornabene, and Joachim Claudet reveals that despite global targets and the High Seas Treaty, protection mainly focuses on shallow waters, leaving deeper zones underprotected. Fishing activities, on the other hand, extend to all depths. As #climatechange impacts #ocean ecosystems, scientists call for research investment to secure Europe's expanding #seaweedfarming industry. 🌿🌊 🔬 Research by the Scottish Association For Marine Science (SAMS) highlights that cold-water #seaweed species, which currently thrive in the northern #Atlantic, may start to disappear by 2070 due to #oceanwarming, increased storm frequency, and unpredictable salinity levels caused by heightened rainfall - meaning new farming techniques are needed. 💬 “In Europe, we are well behind Asia in terms of developing these methods and the #seaweedindustry as a whole is a long way behind the #research and development in the #agriculture industry, for example. MINING THE SEA OR MINING THE SKY? SRI Newsetter July 2024 - by Adriano V. Autino ABSTRACT: The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is facing intense negotiations to finalize regulations for commercial deep-sea mining by July 2025. Several companies, such as The Metals Company, are eager to begin mining operations as early as 2025, even before the regulations are complete. The prospect of deep-sea mining has raised significant environmental concerns, with over 20 countries calling for a moratorium to allow for more scientific study. Critics argue that mining the deep seafloor could devastate fragile ecosystems already threatened by climate change, pollution, and overfishing. However, proponents of deep-sea mining contend that it is necessary to meet the growing global demand for minerals required for renewable energy technologies and the green transition. Land-based mining also faces ethical and environmental challenges, further complicating the issue. The electronic society demands more energy, Artificial Intelligence and large servers also require significant power. The 17 SDGs of the U.N. 2030 Agenda are achievable only if energy (7), jobs (8), and industrial innovation (9) will produce the necessary economic and social support, but these goals conflict with environmental and conservation SDGs. As we see now, the green energy transition strategy also conflicts with the environmental goals. This creates an irreconcilable contradiction between development and environmental goals. The high lifestyle promised by the electronic society may only be available to a few people. However, space settlement and exploration could make a high lifestyle available to all. Rare materials and energy sources can be found in space, and heat can be reused to warm habitats. We must look beyond limited horizons for a sustainable future. Civilian Space Development can balance the equations for sustainability and ensure a durable future for humanity. The Space 18th SDG Coalition is proposing to add an 18th SDG to the U.N. 2030 Agenda to raise awareness about the urgency of Civilian Space Development.
