🌐 The garment industry's rapid growth has come at a high cost. Despite contributing significantly to the global economy, it's built on the exploitation of workers, predominantly young adult women in low-income countries. These workers, making up 80% of the industry's labor force, face unacceptable conditions: low wages, unsafe work environments, and lack of basic rights. 👕 Behind every fast fashion item is a story of hidden exploitation: Substandard working conditions and human rights violations. Wages so low that 9 out of 10 workers in some regions can't afford food or medical care. Women in Asia and Africa earning among the lowest wages globally, with a stark pay gap between genders. 💻 ON THE BLOG: Textiles Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in Europe: A Sustainable Shift 👚 As the fashion industry continues to produce textiles (clothing, footwear, etc.) at an unprecedented pace, the impact on our planet becomes increasingly evident. Textiles, notorious for their difficulty in recycling, contribute significantly to waste streams. In response, governments worldwide are stepping up to address this challenge. ♻ Some countries have already taken a proactive approach to introduce EPR systems for textiles. 👕♻️The Belgian Presidency co-hosted with the United Nations Environment Programme (#UNEP) the high-level event “Threads of Change: Systemic Transformation of the Textile Sector”. Built on a model of overconsumption and overproduction, the textile sector has a considerable impact on the environment, as well as on women and vulnerable workers. Systemic change is required to tackle the environmental footprint of the sector while considering the livelihoods of those involved throughout the global value chain. This event was the opportunity to reflect on how to shift the textile sector towards more sustainability by looking at both upstream production impacts and the means of changing consumption patterns. Representatives of countries, industry and SMEs reflected on the priorities and needs that policies at the EU and global level. Want to know what Textiles Untangled is all about? Read on! ✨ Textiles Untangled is a fun & collaborative workshop about the social and environmental impacts of the textile industry. It is inspired by the pedagogy of the hugely successful Climate Fresk. Participants use the game cards and their collective intelligence to learn about different textile materials and the life cycle of a piece of clothing. They then identify the social & ecological impacts at each step, and brainstorm ways to reduce those impacts. ✨ Textiles Untangled's goal is not just to transmit knowledge, but to inspire people to act. During the workshop,  participants brainstorm necessary changes within society & the industry, understand their own spheres of influence, and identify action they can take, both individually and as a collective. 💫 All you need is 3 hours and 4-8 people to play! The steps of the workshop: 👗 Materials: Discuss the positives and negatives of different kinds of materials. 👘 Life Cycle: Recreate the life cycle of a piece of clothing, from raw materials to the end of life. 👕 Impacts: Identify the social and environmental impacts at each step. 👖 Emotions & Motivations: Share our emotions about the industry and our part in it 👟 Actions: Brainstorm actions on an individual and collective level that can change the industry

Data from non-profit Textile Exchange’s latest Materials Market Report shows that the market share of virgin, fossil-based synthetics continued to increase in 2023, while that of cotton and recycled fibres declined. These findings correspond to Changing Markets' latest survey of 50 major fashion brands. The brands admitted to using more rather than less synthetic materials, contrary to their promises. Zara, SHEIN, boohoo and lululemon are the worst offenders for expanding their use of polluting fossil-fuel fabrics, while many more brands – including Kering (Gucci) and LVMH (Louis Vuitton) and Patagonia, refuse to disclose how much synthetics they use. In fact, 60% of the brands we reviewed refused to disclose vital information, masking the true scale of the industry's fossil fashion obsession, which has devastating consequences. Draft legislation is emerging within the European Union relating to sustainable textile production and labelling. Textile legislation in the EU will have a significant impact on the largest consumer market for textiles in the world. It is being closely followed in other regions; many countries are likely to follow the EU in introducing legislation intended to improve the sustainability of the textile value chain. EU draft legislation will require a life-cycle assessment of each item, using a complex system of Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEF CR). The impact of these rules will fall first on textile producers, who will be responsible for capturing the evidence against the PEFCR. As currently constructed, these rules ignore important factors, such as microplastics and plastic waste; nor do they recognize the full environmental impact of fossil-fuel fibers; nor recognize the positive impact of natural fibers, like cotton, that are renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable. If left unchanged, the outcome will be that, under the PEF framework, man-made fibers will be assessed as being more sustainable than natural ones. https://lnkd.in/dRRK5T_M
