A new game-changing weapon that uses radio waves to disable enemy electronics and take down multiple drones at once is under development for the UK’s armed forces. This forms part of work to put the UK’s defence industry on a war footing following the Prime Minister’s announcement last month of an increase to the defence budget to 2.5% of GDP by 2030. An example of a Radio Frequency Directed Energy Weapon (RFDEW), the versatile system can detect, track and engage a range of threats across land, air and sea. The system will be able to effect targets up to 1km away, with further development in extending the range ongoing. It beams radio waves to disrupt or damage the critical electronic components of enemy vehicles causing them to stop in their tracks or fall out of the sky. RFDEW technology can be mounted on a variety of military vehicles and uses a mobile power source to produce pulses of Radio Frequency energy in a beam that can rapidly fire sequenced shots at individual targets or be broadened to simultaneously engage all threats within that beam. At only 10p per shot fired, the RFDEW beam is a significant cost-effective alternative to traditional missile-based, air defence systems, capable of downing dangerous drone swarms with instant effect. The high level of automation also means the system itself can be operated by a single person. This technology can offer a solution to protection and defence of critical assets and bases. The advanced technology is being developed by a joint team from the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S), working with UK industry under Project Hersa. One challenge lies in the fact that the pool of available assets is unlikely to expand in line with the growing demand. New issuances from the CIS have dramatically declined in the past two years due to the Russia-Ukraine war and higher interest rates. Since the invasion, there has been only one CIS sovereign Eurobond issue, which took place in October 2023 when Uzbekistan sold US dollar and som bonds. Odilbek Isakov, CEO and co-founder of Infrasia Capital and managing director and co-founder of Finasia Capital, highlighted the shift in the market landscape, stating, "Historically, the main issuers were Russian and Ukrainian entities. ICSID Publishes 2024 Annual Report https://lnkd.in/eWgUvm-A ICSID has released its 2024 Annual Report featuring an in-depth look at the Centre's activities over the past fiscal year (July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2024). Earlier today, the ICSID Administrative Council approved the Annual Report and ICSID's Administrative Budget for FY2025 at its 58th Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. The Administrative Council convenes annually at the Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund. In her final annual report as Secretary-General, Meg Kinnear reflected on her 15 years at ICSID. "ICSID has grown in every respect over that period, and I am very proud of what we have accomplished together," she writes in her opening message. Martina Polasek, who was elected ICSID Secretary-General earlier this year, started her term on July 1, 2024. "I would like to thank our Member State representatives, clients, and ICSID colleagues for their support as I have taken on this new role. I look forward to working with you in the year ahead and reporting back on further progress," she said in her message. The Annual Report provides a detailed look into the ICSID caseload during the fiscal year. Highlights include: - A total of 341 ICSID cases were administered in FY2024, which is the second largest number of cases ever administered at ICSID in a single fiscal year. In addition, ICSID administered 17 cases under UNCITRAL and other non-ICSID rules. - 58 new cases were registered under ICSID's procedural rules. - 88 cases were concluded, a record that reflects ICSID's commitment to time and cost efficiency. - A record 49 nationalities were represented amongst the appointments made in FY2024. The Annual Report also provides updates on ICSID's membership and designations to the ICSID Panels of Arbitrators and of Conciliators. Key developments include: - On June 13, 2024, the Republic of Equatorial Guinea became the latest State to sign the ICSID Convention. By the end of FY2024, 166 States had signed the ICSID Convention, of which 158 had become contracting States. - 21 ICSID Member States nominated 74 individuals to ICSID's Panels of Arbitrators and of Conciliators. In addition, Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group and Chair of the ICSID Administrative Council, designated 10 persons to each of the Panels. 🚨 Record Drug Consumption in Australia: A Stimulant Nation 🚨 Recent findings from the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC), NATIONAL WASTEWATER DRUG MONITORING PROGRAM | REPORT 22, have uncovered record levels of drug consumption across both capital cities and regional areas. The significant rise in the use of substances such as methylamphetamine, cocaine, cannabis, opioids, and nicotine places Australia among the highest globally for illicit stimulant use. With these escalating trends, businesses need to be vigilant, as it is estimated that up to 7.5% of workers—or more than 1 million individuals—could potentially be impaired by illicit substances in the workplace. This poses significant risks to workplace safety, productivity, and employee well-being. Associate Professor Dr. John Edwards, Chief Toxicologist at AusHealth Work, underscores the urgency of addressing this issue: "The data is clear—drug consumption in Australia is at levels that represent significant risks. Our experience with workplace testing shows that businesses implementing structured drug and alcohol testing programs see a significant reduction in substance misuse. In fact, our testing programs have resulted in detection rates that are generally one fifth of the national average, or less, demonstrating the effectiveness of proactive deterrence."
