🌎 Delegates at the 61st meeting of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 🇧🇬Sofia, Bulgaria have failed to agree on a timeline for the upcoming seventh assessment report (AR7). 📚 AR7 will be the IPCC’s latest round of reports summarising the most recently published climate science. First published in 1990, the reports typically take 6-7 years to complete. 🗓 Many countries said in Sofia that they favoured an accelerated timeline, in which all three “working group” reports would be completed by June 2028. However, countries including 🇰🇪Kenya, 🇮🇳India, 🇨🇳China and 🇿🇦South Africa opposed the accelerated timeline, warning that “haste leads to shoddy work” and raising concerns that the decision was being rushed through. According to a new report, while €107bn was pledged in 2022, the actual aid provided to developing nations was closer to €26bn to €32bn, with 70% of the funds given as loans at profitable market rates. One of the key goals for COP29 Azerbaijan in Baku is to strengthen commitments made in national climate plans formally known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). SEI's Åsa Persson, Derik Broekhoff, Maya Rebermark and Lynsi Burton argue that ambitious #NDCs don't just mitigate climate risks—they build stronger economies and resilient societies. We can already see this in action in our work with the government of Morocco where our LEAP tool for energy, climate mitigation, and air pollution planning, demonstrated that by integrating climate, biodiversity and development strategies, Morocco can save an estimated US $7 billion per year by 2050 and create up to 350 000 jobs. 🇽🇰 Kosovo presented its first voluntary NDC at the NDC Partnership Pavilion One year after pledging bold action for a sustainable future, Kosovo presented it NDC today — a detailed plan that sets ambitious goals for climate action and resilience. Highlights from the NDC include: ✅ Emissions reductions: Kosovo aims for a 16.3% reduction in GHG emissions by 2030. ✅ Energy transition: The plan targets 1,600 MW of wind and solar by 2031, with successful projects like the 100 MW solar auction, setting new regional standards for renewable energy. ✅ Climate adaptation: Investments in water infrastructure and flood risk management are a priority to enhance community resilience. ✅ Sustainable Transport: Kosovo is upgrading its railway network to reduce emissions, emphasizing sustainable transport and regional connectivity. European political leaders are pawning the climate and environmental action, expecting to gain cheap wins in the 2024 European Elections 🤦‍♂️ As ministers have sealed the overhauled of the Common Agricultural Policy today, we are witnessing yet another proof that policymakers have decided to play around fears and to weaponise environmental legislations. In recent months, Ursula von der Leyen’s European Commission has loosened pollution rules for industrial farms, dropped plans for sustainable food production, abandoned targets to reduce pesticides and shelved efforts to ensure a resilient water supply. Some national governments have frozen EU plans to restore nature in Europe and compromised corporate due diligence rules protecting human rights and the environment. Now, agriculture ministers are threatening the EU’s new rules to fight global deforestation... That's why the WWF European Policy Office, together with the European Environmental Bureau, Greenpeace European Unit, BirdLife Europe and Central Asia, Friends of the Earth Europe and over 140 other organisations, we are publishing a joint statement today warning of the consequences of the current attack on EU’s green rules! European citizens are demanding the Union to be determined and consistent in its action to fight climate change, pollution and the decline of biodiversity. Launch of Climate Facts Europe — Database For Fact-Checking And Debunking Climate Disinformation The EU is a major player in global climate policy, and it is crucial for its citizens and journalists to have access to verified climate information. Moreover, climate issues are directly linked to healthcare, food&agriculture and infrastructure. Today, the European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN), in association with participating member organisations, has launched the Climate Facts project, supported by the European Climate Foundation.
