This is an example of how our experience shapes our expectations as users. And a UI design failure. In the screenshot, the message reads 'Your order is on the way'. Should be clear right? But right below that the steps show "Delivered" in bold and the green dot is active. Two things happened. 1. I panicked for a minute that my prepaid items had been delivered to the wrong house, again. I have had such experiences and had to go through the hassle of either calling the delivery person and locating the items or getting a refund. These interactions outside the app has shaped my perspective. 2. I was looking at the green dot against delivered and my brain bypassed the big caption saying my items are on the way. The steps UI is wrong. The delivered dot should not be in green, it should be a neutral color indicating that the step is yet to be completed. Colour semantics matter. The tiny check mark inside the green circle doesn't help either in case one argues. Lots of excitement working together with Babette Egges-Huijsmans on our first UX/UI proposal! It's always challenging to meet that delicate balance between what a project needs and the resources available to meet goals within a certain timeframe. This balancing act can be perfectly illustrated by the Iron Triangle of project management: Scope, Time, and Cost. 🔷 Scope: Clearly defining the project's goals, deliverables, and requirements sets the foundation. In a proposal, outlining what the project aims to achieve is crucial. 🔷 Time: Estimating the schedule for completing the project, including milestones and deadlines, ensures that the proposed timeline is realistic and achievable. 🔷 Cost: A detailed budget that aligns with the scope and timeline ensures that sufficient resources are allocated to meet project objectives. The Iron Triangle reminds us that changes to one constraint impact the others. Expanding the scope might require more time and increase costs. A tight deadline might necessitate a reduction in scope. Similarly, a limited budget could lead to a longer timeline or a narrower scope. Balancing these constraints in a proposal ensures that the project can achieve its goals effectively and efficiently, meeting stakeholders' expectations within resource constraints. 💡 3 Powerful lessons from our UX Meetup: Insights from UXCon 2024 Last week I facilitated a small meetup with UX designers from different companies (thank you Dutch Coding Company for your help and sponsorship in arranging this!). This time, Else Markslag gave us an inspiring overview of her learnings from UXCon 2024! 📝 My top 3 take-aways: 1. Speak in the language of the person you're talking to. If you ask for budget to 'refine touchpoints' from a business manager you're likely to be disappointed. Instead, explain that you will improve the conversion of this feature! 2. Make decisions. Making assumptions is part of the decision-making process, just make sure you keep evaluating them. Postponing a decision only leads to standing still. By making decisions you move forward! 3. Don't think 'you know' because you are a pro! In a study from VWO Industry Insights, they found that only 14% of their 'UX improvement' experiments was a win. Even though many psychological arguments could be made for these experiments, most of them were not better than the initial design!

How to Turn Your UX into a Revenue Machine!

𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘆 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 😬 Last week I proudly launched my brand new freelancing website. Being a UX Researcher, I had tested my website on two different laptops, my iPhone and every browser I could think of. Still, a couple hours in, I received a message from a former colleague. He had spotted an error! My website had a large white space when scrolling to the right, making the experience less enjoyable than it could have been. My first thought? How awkward - not having a perfect website as a UX expert. My second thought? This is a great example of why UX research is so important! 🌟 Let me tell you why: 𝟭. 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 That I don’t scroll horizontally, doesn’t mean that end users won’t. You’d be surprised how ofter users interact with websites and apps in unpredictable ways. UX research provides valuable insights into real-life user behavior, helping to identify areas for improvement that were not initially considered. 𝟮. 𝗔 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗲𝗿 Despite thorough testing, some problems can only be identified through real-world user interactions, on a variety of devices. On my MacBook, the horizontal scroll bar was not visible. On my colleagues laptop, it was, making it tempting to check what could be hiding there. 𝟯. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝗯𝗶𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 As a designer, you know your product inside out. To uncover usability issues, you need unbiased testers that share their unfiltered opinions about your product. And no, asking your team member to have a quick look doesn't count ;) The good news is that usability issues can easily be identified with some simple UX research. Hey Network, Does anyone have insights on UX research tools like Lyssna, UXtweak, Lookback, etc.? I'd love to hear about your pros and cons.   At ANWB, we currently have a fully equipped UX Lab and use tools like Optimizely and ContentSquare. We're considering expanding our toolkit to enhance the speed and scope of our research during the design phase. In the website optimisation world we use an acronym known as CRO. For the unfamiliar CRO stands for Conversion Rate Optimisation and is an approach we as web designers take to make logical, research-based, non-biased improvements to websites. These improvements should all be based on a hypothesis. Such as: "Adding a sticky navigation bar to the website will increase user engagement by making it easier for users to access key sections without scrolling back to the top." By "user engagement" we mean more clicks, longer time on site, lower bounce rate. These can all be measured using accurate tagging and analysis of KPIs.
