Action beats planning every single time... On the 1st of October 2018, Maarten van der Kwaak and I (read Maarten) made a spreadsheet with all the different tasks we had to do in order for us to have our first paying customer. We had to set up a legal entity, we had to create contracts, I had to move to Ukraine, we had to find an office, we had to hire our first employees, we had to make a sales presentation. And endless list of to do's... Based on this planning, we estimated that we would have our first paying customer on the 1st of January 2019. Two days later, Revolut wanted to work with us. Start date. The 20th of October... Two weeks later... What we thought would take us 3 months we did in 2 weeks. We bribed an attorney to set up our legal entity. We copied contracts from our previous companies. I moved to Kyiv without even saying goodbye to anyone. We worked with 2 different freelancers to serve Revolut. Myy old intern designed a slick looking sales presentation. And we were up and running in two weeks. My biggest learning is that when you have to, you will always find a way. Say 'yes' and figure things out. Action will always beat planning. Colleague Marc Veenendaal decided to gain more knowledge and improve his skills in the field of sales. What is 'sales' really? During the Nima A sales course, he learned about sales across different industries. "By sitting with classmates, you hear various stories. You take these into the experiences you have in your own work. By expanding my competencies, I expect to be able to offer more to the customers of Fabory." Marc had not previously pursued formal education in sales and wanted to delve deeper into the subject. This allowed him to gain more knowledge about the content and the directions he could take in the future. "My manager thought it was a good idea to pursue this, and together we chose Nima A.” 🤓 The course includes both theory and practical parts. “I find that I am getting better at planning preparation and structuring conversations with customers. This enables me to assist the customer more effectively. By creating calm and clarity, a clear direction emerges for where we want to go together." 🔝 Marc is well on his way to successfully completing the course. He passed the practical exam with a score of 7.6. 👨‍🎓 "The theoretical part will take place soon. Insight of the week Team Academy Amsterdam Sharing insights I make during my entrepreneurship study. Year 3 started this week and traditionally kicks off with Startup Week. A week organized by students with the purpose of integrating year 1 and introducing them to the concept of the studies, sharing experiences and bonding. Each year has to organize one day - topics can be chosen freely. Concepts are presented upfront. Even though most students at TA have their own business, the study is based on a team learning concept. #ifyouwanttogofastgoaloneifyouwanttogofargotogehter The foundation of each team is a "team manifesto" - a document that manifests shared values and goals for each team. From our experience setting this up is hard to grasp in the beginning and even harder to execute. That´s why we wanted to introduce year 1 to the concept early - but in a fun and playful way. How? - teamed up 1st years with representatives from each year - 4h time to explain / experience the concept and share experiences - 1h time to edit a video - presentation - most creative team wins Please have a look at my favorite video from this day. Congrats Team 1 - thanks for a laugh! BTW: Boris Hofland directed and filmed with his phone during the day and edited the video within 1 hour. He is a freelance digital marketeer & content creator.
