Interesting post about the difference between the big upstarts in the US versus the EU. I think regulation is indeed one of the killers. I have been setting up some new startups in the Netherlands recently. Even before we set up an entity, I got nausea from the way the tax system works. Trying to tax 'value growth' of an early stage startup, making it practically impossible to transfer shares without paying taxes is not a great incentive. It's official!! 👀 I am joining Antler's residency as part of their 3rd Amsterdam based cohort! 😁 And it's really exciting as Antler is one of the biggest early-stage investors out there, backing exciting new projects that are in pre-seed and even pre-team stages! Being completely solo and bootstrapped means that this residency is particularly interesting to me as they will open their entire network of builders, founders, VCs and partner organizations to help kickstart my journey. Starting today and for the coming 14 weeks I will be working full-time with them and focussing on the following: 𝟭. 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗰𝗼-𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿! With so many options, here's how to be strategic: 🔎 Qualify ruthlessly. Treat your investor funnel like a sales funnel. AlbionVC, for example, invests $1-10M in UK-based B2B software and deeptech. If you’re a Paris-based consumer marketplace raising $20M, it’s a non-starter. Founders waste precious time crafting outreach to funds outside their scope. 🥇 Prioritise Smartly. Rank your target funds by both appeal and likelihood of success. 💘 Find a Warm Intro. If you don’t know the fund directly, network like you would for sales. Get a concise, compelling intro via a mutual connection. Remember a “pass” could even lead to a referral to another, better-fit fund. 🎮 Sequence Pitches. Start with lower-priority VCs to refine your pitch with early feedback. Then, approach your top picks with a polished narrative. Generating interest early creates momentum in your process. ⚠️ Requalify Your VCs! To all VanMoof’rs past & present. My condolences 🎻 I will give them credit for introducing bike alarms & tracking options making them some of the most secure bikes in London, where anything w two wheels was fair game. What are the drivers behind striving for rapid growth & profit? Perhaps it’s a natural aspect of startup culture, enabled by the virtuous investor/shareholder, risk/reward, optionality/allure, the promise of success w outsized gains. The govt further enables it with the additional expense of corporate tax 😢 as they should, but it will become a double edged sword for progress as the mission shifts to impact. If the project were regenerative & contributing to community health, then a form of impact investing would be a great substitute. Shareholder Primacy >>> Stakeholder Capitalism. TAX breaks such as the UK SEIS (startup enterprise investment scheme) come to mind where the govt underwrites 20 - 60% in tax writes offs if things go ‘Pete Tong’, but perhaps this calls for a new class of business. We have our NGOs, to LLCs, but is there any recognition from the state for B Corp & how might that work under a shared ownership / distributed partners model. Already the governance sounds bespoke & complicated to administer, unless ur a religion, perhaps a new faith will be found in a blockchain DAO. Then we can start having the important conversation around game theory & transparent value chains⛓️ If a business declares their intent to limit profits that align w wider boundary values. The govt can incentivise it w tax breaks & enable open source code repository’s to further lower the barrier to entry for localism.
