Snap's New Spectacles Inch Closer To Compelling AR: The Verge's Alex Heath reports: Snap's fifth-generation Spectacles have a richer, more immersive display. Using them feels snappier. They weigh less than their predecessor and last longer on a charge. Those are exactly the kinds of upgrades you'd expect from a product line that's technically eight years old. But the market for Spectacles -- and AR glasses in general -- still feels as nascent as ever. Snap has an idea for what could change that: developers. These new Spectacles, announced Tuesday at Snap's annual Partner Summit in Los Angeles, aren't being sold. Instead, Snap is repeating its playbook for the last version of Spectacles in 2021 and distributing them to the people who make AR lenses for Snapchat. This time around, though, there's an extra hurdle: you have to apply for access through Lens Studio, the company's desktop tool for creating AR software, and pay $1,188 to lease a pair for at least one year. (After a year, the subscription becomes $99 a month.) Yes, Snap is asking developers to pay $1,188 to build software for hardware with no user base. Even still, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel believes the interest will be there. "Our goal is really to empower and inspire the developer and AR enthusiast communities," he tells me. "This really is an invitation, and hopefully an inspiration, to create." [...] Ultimately, I'm skeptical of why developers will want to build software for Spectacles right now, given the lack of a market and the cost of getting access to a pair. Still, Spiegel believes enough of them are excited about the promise of AR glasses and that they'll want to help shape that future. "I think it's the same reason why developers were really excited with the early desktop computer or the reason why developers were really excited by the early smartphones," he says. "I think this is a group of visionary technologists who are really excited about what the future holds." Spiegel may be right. AR glasses may be the future, and Spectacles may be well-positioned to become the next major computing platform, even with competition heating up. Luma AI just released their first video model DREAM MACHINE, so I decided to take it for a spin and try to push its limits, by reimagining and bringing to life "Meet Your Maker", a teaser trailer for one of my latest stories and world-building experiments, heavily influenced by 80s and 90s Japanese anime and sci-fi. (+today also Stable Diffusion 3 Medium) On the product side we got huge updates with krea.ai, PIKA.Labs, #KLING from Kuaishou Technology (HMU for access please 🥺) and now also Luma AI Dream Machine. OpenAIs SORA coming up next... It's hard to keep up with all these innovations - but be sure I have an eye 👀 on everything and try everything out I can, because I love it 🤩 The industry is reinventing itself right now. Creativity needs value pricing in the age of AI Have you seen Blair Vermette’s adidas floral ad? The one that he created with AI tools. No actors needed. No crew. No cameras. Not even ther products are real. It’s great. Look it up. He didn’t create it with one prompt. It took a while, but much less time and cost than the traditional way. In this case, the ad was not commissioned by Adidas. But if it had been, how much should it have cost them? If we apply today’s pricing approach, based on time and materials, it would be pennies on the dollar compared to traditional productions: the cost of one man’s time plus a few tool subscription fees and some overhead. Now fast forward to a world where the use of these AI production tools has become mainstream. If everyone just charges for their time, we would have eliminated thousands of jobs and replaced them with commoditised creativity-as-a-service offerings. This is hardly a rosy outlook for the sector. Instead, we may need to switch to value pricing: what is the ad worth to the client? We may need to switch to premiums based on the talent of the creator, much like directors or actors are paid differently based on their track record. You may think this is naive. That a whole market of low cost freelancer-for-hire will pop up. Any brand will be able to create an add for a few hundred dollars. This is true, yet ironically, will mean a sea of generic looking me-too ads will flood consumers’ senses. It will become harder for ads to rise above the clutter. True creative talent will become more necessary. If not, we risk commodotising creativity to the point where livelihoods can not be sustained from the work, leading to a human exodus from the sector and leaving the field for fully automated tools. As someone said, we wanted the AI to do the laundry, not create the art. #creativity #ai #production

👀 Quest 4 on the horizon? Meta might be soon releasing 3 new devices: Quest 4, Quest 4S and Quest Pro 2 to compete with Vision Pro 👇 These releases might be a little far out (reportedly planned for 2026 and 2027). But it's nice to see Meta is continuously pushing on immersive through Reality Labs. Additionally, there's some really exciting rumors about the Quest Pro 2. Apparently, Meta is aiming to use this new Pro 2 to compete with the Vision Pro. Now that Apple has joined the game and released a US$3499 device, the possibilities for immersive tech have opened up. If Meta releases a Quest Pro 2 for let's say US$1999 having similar features of the Vision Pro, it could be a big win. Meta's whole strategy has been to be the affordable player in the game, delivering what seems to be more than people are paying for. By positioning right below Apple with a Quest Pro 2, might end up being a winning strategy. Exciting stuff nevertheless! Five years ago a scripted film producer told me that, in not too distant future, Hollywood movies would be made by a single prompting engineer sat on a single laptop. AI would take every production role, from writing to camera department to post. And (this to me was the really shocking part) in the vast majority of films AI would completely replace actors. He reasoned that: 1. Replacing on-screen talent with AI generation would give complete creative freedom in the area of casting. Whereas currently a director might prefer actor A’s command of the role, but actor B has a better look, actor C a better voice, and actor D a better range; with AI there would be no compromise, it would be programmed to be perfect. 2. Gone would be the issues attached to using human resources. AI wouldn’t be late, call in sick, fail to learn its lines, demand its own trailer, throw a tantrum with the director or fall out with its co-star. You wouldn’t have to pay it five million bucks per movie and then find out it won’t do on a chat show to promote the film. It won’t try to shag the runners and there will be no need for intimacy coordinators. I countered that, whilst the technology would make this possible, what about the romance of real people being played by real people? Viewers would surely shun this clinical version of the future, and would hanker for the imperfections of their fellow humans. Data proved me wrong on that point, he said, and pointed to examples of anime characters (not even photo real) becoming as adored and iconic as Hollywood stars. As we fast approach a tipping point where AI generated characters are indistinguishable from real human beings, what do you think? Are AI “actors” about to herald an amazing new era of productivity and creativity across scripted programming and movies, or will people always want to watch people?

Here's another great ad with my analysis. An oldie, but a goldie. This time, created by Volvo Group, featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme. . . Let's start with Volvo's goal: It's simple really. They want to show they're the best when it comes to vehicular engineering. Their main selling point? The safety and durability of their products. It's in their slogan: 'Volvo, For Life'. The control and smoothness of their vehicles are designed to ensure the driver feels secure. That their *life* is in good hands. Considering that motor-vehicle accidents rank as the 9th leading cause of death, globally for all age-groups, This is definitely a major fear of their target audience they're addressing well. The other side to the slogan highlights how when one buys a Volvo car, it will remain in good shape throughout their entire life. Now, onto the ad itself: We immediately open with a sense of pure serenity. Perfect sunset and clear sky, the calming melody of Enya's song, with Jean looking so relaxed he might very-well be sleeping. Again --- hammering home the sense that everything is 'under control', and how drivers feel totally at ease behind the wheel of a Volvo. Next, our boy Van Damme opens with the first line of his monologue: 'I've had my ups and downs. My fair share of bumpy roads, and heavy winds. That's what made me what I am today'. This compounds the message that Volvo cars are hard-core, and built to last. I also see it with the sub-text of: 'everything has lead up to this moment of introducing the ultimate heavy-duty vehicle'. He finishes his monologue, praising his thunder-thighs, when the trucks finally drift apart so effortlessly at the sound of Enya's voice --- while the action star performs his perfect split. Volvo topping it all off, highlighting the 'stability and precision' of 'Volvo Dynamic Steering'. Ask yourself: Would this ad be as effective without Jean-Claude Vam Damme, and his story of being a legendary martial artist? Would it be as effective without Volvo's legacy of manufacturing the safest and strongest vehicles in existence? That's what a Brand is. Personal or otherwise. A story that sticks with you, long after it's told. Next time you question the importance of your own one, remind yourself that nothing captures one's attention quite as well as a good story. No matter how short and insignificant it may seem.
