Over ons
VEI - Dutch Water Operators Providing universal access to potable water positively boosts the economic and social development of a region. It permanently creates new opportunities for the population. VEI expands the capabilities of drinking water companies and - in cooperation with the water company and (inter)national partners - help them professionalize their operations. VEI assigns employees from its parent companies and partner companies to the local drinking water businesses. They transfer expertise, provide advice, share best practices and together with local water companies set up and run their operations in a business-like and efficient manner. The Dutch drinking water companies Vitens and Evides Waterbedrijf are the initiators behind VEI. WML, Watercompany Groningen, Brabant Water, WLN and PWN have joined VEI as partners. Through donor support, VEI is able to supplement the financial contribution they make.

Over the past two weeks, I had the privilege of collaborating with the dedicated GIS Mutare team to implement a GIS Viewer leveraging GeoServer and Leaflet with the help of Marco Duiker. Together, we unlocked the potential of GIS enabling the team to visualize, analyze, and share geospatial data. Witnessing the viewer come to life and knowing it will support their internal processes was truly gratifying. A huge thank you to the Mutare team for their collaboration, dedication, and openness to innovation. I was also delighted to bring a copy of the Aqua Heroes game to Mutare. Developed by the Haarlem-Mutare Stedenband, this game is designed for schools to raise awareness, foster critical thinking, and build a strong sense of community dedicated to sustainable water management. 💧 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 VEI Malawi recently supported the waterboard in Malawi with unblocking two 5-meter pipes connecting old filter tanks to a chlorination tank. Transporting a large compressor would have cost hundreds of euros, risked damaging the pipes, and makes a higher risk working environment. Instead, the team locally rented a small car-tire compressor for just €8. After persistent work using air, water, and a drain rod, the pipes were successfully cleared. This low-cost, low risk and efficient solution allows the waterboard to restore the filtration system, improving the temporary water supply for the Dowa / Dzaleka area. Sometimes, simple ideas create meaningful impact! 🌍💦 Vitens Evides Waterbedrijf WML PWN Waterbedrijf Groningen WLN WMD Drinkwater NV Brabant Water N.V. #SustainableSolutions #WaterManagement #Teamwork #Malawi #SDG6 WaterWorX #waterworx

A multidisciplinary team has been selected to become part of Water as Leverage Nakuru! Nakuru, one of Africa's fastest-growing cities, is taking bold steps to address critical water challenges through the Water as Leverage (WaL) initiative. Nakuru faces pressing issues such as prolonged dry spells, intense flooding, rising water levels in Lake Nakuru, and rapid urbanization, particularly in flood-prone informal settlements. In Nakuru, the WaL methodology is being implemented to address urban climate adaptation challenges by fostering innovative, inclusive, and integral solutions. Building on existing partnerships between the COUNTY GOVERNMENT OF NAKURU, VEI, UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Kenya, the initiative integrates local, national, and international stakeholders. WaL Nakuru focuses on investing in early-stage project development to unlock substantial funding for feasibility studies and implementation. Its goal is to deliver bankable projects and sustainable interventions that support resilient economic development while aligning with key local and national policy ambitions. We’re proud to announce the Water as Leverage Nakuru multidisciplinary team consisting of Felixx Landscape Architects & Planners (Lead organisation, the Netherlands), Witteveen+Bos (the Netherlands), Bantu Studio Design & Research (South Africa), CSC Strategy & Finance (the Netherlands), Delft University of Technology (the Netherlands), Planning Development Consulting Ltd. (Kenya), Egerton University (Kenya). The proposal called “Nature kama kujiinua” (Nature as Leverage) addresses Nakuru’s water management crises by integrating Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) within a Nature-Based Sponge System (NBSS). This innovative framework harmonizes urban development with natural water cycles, reversing the norm from draining to retaining to enhance resilience against climate change and water scarcity. Emphasizing inclusivity, ecological integrity, and community engagement, the proposal integrates Indigenous knowledge to ensure equitable solutions. By re-imagining relationships between water, territory, and Lake Nakuru, this approach aims to preserve biodiversity, strengthen urban-ecological connections, and establish sustainable, climate-adaptive systems for Nakuru’s future. Together, we are paving the way for Nakuru to become an inspiring example for climate resilience, using sponge city models and NBS for a sustainable urban growth in Africa. Collaborating for a Sustainable Future In collaboration with Water Resources Authority (WRA) we hosted a two day stakeholders' forum for Ngosur Dawan WRUA under the Catchment to Tap (C2T) project. This critical initiative advances the gazettement of the Kabatini Aquifer, a vital water source sustaining Nakuru City. Our commitment to stakeholder engagement reinforces our leadership in water and sanitation service delivery.

💡 New Article Publication: Accelerating Non-Revenue Water Reduction through Water Operator Partnerships. We are pleased to share our latest Paper: "The role of Water Operator Partnership in accelerating adoption of new working processes for non-revenue water reduction: a case study – WaterWorX WOP between Perumda Air Minum Tirta Moedal and VEI." published in the International Water Association Journal of Water, Sanitation & Hygiene for Development. This study highlights how the WaterWorX WOP between VEI and Perumda Air Minum Tirta Moedal (PDAM) Semarang, Indonesia, can drive innovation in reducing non-revenue water (NRW) in PDAM. In the paper, we explore the approach, results, and contributing factors that enable the successful adoption of new working processes. Thanks to the expertise from VEI and the eagerness to learn from PDAM, PDAM successfully reduced NRW levels from 39% to 26%. Key takeaways: * Non-revenue water levels can be reduced within a relatively short time frame (and with good return on investment) based on ‘action research’. * Successful WOPs benefit both the mentor and mentee utility. * ‘We learn from our mistakes but develop from our successes’: we have been inspired by other WOPs/utilities and hope this case study will inspire others!
