Sustainable Ocean Alliance Celebrates 10 Years of Ocean Innovation Marking its 10th anniversary, the Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) has introduced an ocean-friendly startup label and unveiled a new cohort of “ecopreneurs” driving sustainable solutions for the blue economy. Founded in 2014 by Daniela Fernandez, SOA has evolved from advocacy to active market participation through its accelerator program, which supports startups from pre-seed to commercialization. SOA has focused its efforts on five high-impact categories: Greenhouse Gas Reduction, Pollution Reduction, Ecosystems and Species, Blue Foods, and Ocean Data, Literacy, & Research. Its newest cohort of startups includes: Oneka Technologies: Desalination buoys for sustainable freshwater. Genevos: Hydrogen and fuel cell power systems for maritime. Vlinder: Mangrove restoration with carbon credits targeting marginalized communities. Phycolabs: Seaweed-based biofibers. INVERSA Leathers: Leather derived from invasive species. Koraï: Marine biodiversity consulting and restoration. SeaVoir Wellness: Algae-based health supplements. PierSight: Ocean satellite imaging. After evaluating 77 applications from 17 countries, SeaGrown (UK) and cosma (France) were selected for their groundbreaking contributions. - cosma was recognized for its biodiversity monitoring solution, combining underwater drones with AI-based methodologies to deliver high-resolution seabed data analysis. - SeaGrown received accolades for its seaweed farming techniques, integrating aquaculture practices that enhance biodiversity alongside offshore wind operations. 🚀 FLOCEAN Secures $9M to Scale Subsea Desalination Technology Norway-based Flocean has raised US$9 million (NOK 100 million) in Series A funding to advance its subsea desalination technology. The funding round was led by Burnt Island Ventures, Nysnø Climate Investments, and Freebird Partners LP, with additional backing from Katapult Ocean, MP PENSJON PK, and former Bridgewater Associates executives. Flocean's deep water reverse osmosis systems, operating 400–600 meters below the ocean surface, significantly reduce energy consumption by up to 50% while eliminating toxic brine discharge and minimizing land use by up to 95%.
