On opposite sides of the planet—in Brussels at the #EURegionsWeek and in Sydney at the #GlobalNaturePositiveSummit — we 're all grappling with the same dilemma: how do we keep developing our regions while nature is in decline.
In my recent talk at Charles Darwin University’s RIEL, I explored the human side of this challenge, focusing on how we navigate our multi-crisis reality.
The short answer? We need to rethink how we’re developing our regions.
Or, as the scientists like to say: "Nature-based systems transformation is key."
So, what’s nature-based regional systems transformation really about?
✔️ Quadruple Helix governance (aka Dutch Diamond): This is where government, society, science, and business join forces like a mission-driven team to solve societal challenges, while also creating jobs and boosting regional income.
✔️ Jointly defining nature-based development principles: These are the guideposts for every single development in the region, ensuring that nature is at the heart of decision-making.
✔️ Nature-based innovation: Leveraging nature to solve social and economic challenges while safeguarding the environment.
✔️ Conversations supported by evidence, experiences, and visuals: People bring different perspectives, knowledge, and perceptions to the table. Through meaningful conversations we can find common ground and align our efforts toward a shared vision for the future. ✔️ Emotions and empathy: Let’s face it—transforming regions isn’t just about data and facts. It’s about emotions, taking the time to truly understand one another and acknowledge the struggles and grief that come with these transformations. Real human connections are what drive real change.
